Deus Ex: Human Revolution Graphics Comparison

See how Deus Ex looks across the consoles and the PC.

While the visual design of Deus Ex: Human Revolution is excellent, the game's engine doesn't incorporate many of the complex graphical features found in games that have come out in the past few years. Simplistic lighting and shadowing models are common, and many of the game's textures give the world a somewhat sterile look. Whether you're playing on a PC with DirectX 11 support or on a console, the various versions of the game render in much the same manner.

The PC version of the game offers a few graphical options to tweak, and when switching from DirectX 11 to DirectX 10, the game removes access to tessellation, as well as more complex depth-of-field and shadow effects. The lack of these features changes the look of the game slightly, and in no way ruins the feel of the game. Playing the game with rock-bottom settings is completely an option.

High vs. Low Quality

DirectX 11 High DirectX 10 Low

Post Processing

As far as we can tell, post processing changes the way that light sources affect the overall look of the environment. When disabled, the blue from the monitor on the wall seems to take over the scene.

Enabled Disabled

Tessellation

Tessellation is mainly used on character models in Deus Ex. It gives the models a rounder, more natural look. There are a few objects in the world that make use of the feature as well, but they're far and few between.

Enabled Disabled
Enabled Disabled

Shadows

Simple lighting models beget simple shadows. Soft shadows give the edges a lightly fuzzed-out look. The difference between enabling and disabling shadows is readily apparent. Note that only the box in the scene loses its shadowing.

Soft High Disabled

SSAO

The vast majority of shadowing in Deus Ex comes from screen space ambient occlusion, or SSAO.

Enabled Disabled

Depth of Field

Depth of field, as far as we can tell, is used only in conversational moments. Note how the backdrop around the character takes on an out-of-focus look. Many games also make use of depth of field when zooming in from a gun sight, but that is not the case with Deus Ex.

Console and PC Comparisons

There are few differences between the consoles and the PC. Aside from slightly different SSAO usage and resolution differences, the versions look remarkably similar.

The pretty pictures are just that - pretty, realistic all the games on my 900 dollar pc look nice. The sole reason I believe all the arguments get so hot is the pc has the keyboard and mouse, and it is much more accurate than the whachamacallit's those consoles use. I can't even stand upright using a console game pad, come on pc gamers admit it we are just hard wired to a keyboard/mouse. It's like digging your nose for snot, we are just unable to use those stupid controllers. All we do is every 2yr's we get another video card and some upgrade. As far as looks go the pc will always look better, the console has some unreal combined moves that the pc will never have. We pc players are hooked on fooling around with our components and overclocking stuff, we care more about our rigs than the games. The gaming industry just puts out stuff that require the pc owner to keep on upgrading every 2yrs, 800 to 2000 a year is mandatory to keep the industry going, planned obsolescence, brilliant. I'm game, give me something good to throw money at and I'm all in.

note that PC also gets the ENBseries mod for this game.

PC and PS3 look dead even, 360 is way too dark.

@ducati101 Looking at prices the only ones that you mentioned at that price are used if availible at all. All new ran for about $150.

@devastion913 An old 8800GT/9800GT will play this game at better resolution than either console.

@ducati101 My question was what $50 card?

ducati101

@devastion913 Who said max settings? A $50 card will play this gane at better resolution and settings than consoles.

Does any of this really matter?! PC's, Xbox, PS3 whatever! Main thing is that this game is fantastic! Story alone wins, not graphics

ioannisdenton

great job there, seamless versions. yes pc should have better graphics BUT it does not matter as in high settings it looks very good, experience the game for what it is pc gamers.

@analgrin unfortunately that 20% is fading due to the trend activision pulled with mw2.

they should invested in a better 3d model design there are some key characters with the face similar to the others and with ankward bodies. the environment is well made.

Now all that GS needs in someone who knows how to take proper comparison shots. That woman is standing too far away to compare how her face looks on different systems. The fire on the fourth shot should also be much closer. There should be a proper close-up shot of how natural the shadows look on surfaces. I can take random hallway shots myself. Tsk-tsk.

There's a few better effects here and there on my pc version of the game. Glass refracts light better (see the woman in the lift) but all in all not much to write home about. Best thing about the pc version as always is that it cost over 20% less than console version!! :D

@Atheosis Yes, it is a port. They outsourced the PC version to another company while Eidos focused on making the console versions!

Atheosis
Atheosis

@starduke It's not a port. It's a cross-platform title. Ports are releases that come out after a release on a different platform. For instance the 360 version of The Witcher 2.

Atheosis

Honestly the only effect that is really noticeable here is the tessellation. Very few games push PC hardware anymore. And this certainly isn't one of those.

@CoRiNi lmao no console games usually run at 720p. The 360 upscales them and the PS3 doesn't I believe. Look at COD thats something like 640p. @WCK619 I agree gameplay/story > graphics but come on they are not mutually exclusive. Look at Witcher 2! Fantastic game truly wonderful and it didn't sacrifice anywhere and its only DX9! Ofcourse im not complaining but considering how much I've read and seen about the PC version I'm a bit dissapointed with the graphics. I love the art style though.

WCK619
WCK619

@rezarazor I totally disagree. Gameplay and story are first and foremost. Graphics are a great added benefit but a game does not lose 50% of its appeal by having low end graphics. Great games can survive on gameplay and story alone. A game with incredible high end graphics that utilizes the potential of the latest technology is nothing more than a tech demo if it doesn't have good story and gameplay. You are right about Crysis. It is a great game not only because of it's story and gameplay but also because of its excellent graphics. Not sure why you single out Crysis 1 on this. Personally I felt Crysis 2 looked and handled better. Anyways, if you had to pick one that could be neglected, surely you wouldn't pick gameplay/story in favor of great graphics would you? I hope not. Because we've seen what happens when developers decide eye catching visuals are more important for stimulating the majority of customers. It's called Hollywood.

@WiteLite It is a bit cruel that so many good titles are coming out this season. I wish some of these games could have come out last year to even it out since very little in the way of good games made wakes last year and suddenly in '11 were bombarded with great titles and not enough $$$ to get them all.

Depth of field doesnt just occur in conversations, you can see it over larger distances with objects and characters appearing faded until you get closer. The last screenshot is junk, he's starring at a wall 10 ft away....what are you hoping to find there?

Hmm, so it's a good PC port. It's just too bad a series that started on PC ended up with a PC port.

Ive been playing on PC with my new rig whilst my gf has been smashing through it on the xbox. tbh the games look pretty much the same across all - where the PC comes into its own (isnt the keyboard and mouse fyi - ive been using the xbox controller as i prefer it for analogue movement, and stick aim isnt bad if your used to it - definately not as fast or snap-accurate as a mouse but it keeps me much more immersed) its the framerate and resolution. just a far more crisp image and playing at a steady 60fps is awesome in any game. anyway you cut it though - AWESOME game

@SY_shoot Yes, because you can use a PS3 or a 360 to hack high level security doors.......... That was the dumbest remark I've read in a long time.

devastion913
devastion913

@WiteLite I never said the console version will be greater than the PC version, I simply stated that according to reviews I read from a number of PC gamers some games at the time of a console switch look better on the console. Some does not mean all and yes, any game the was designed for one system will not be better on the ported versions and most devs use the PC as a lead platform except for the many console exclusives and cross-overs like Saints Row.

SY_shoot

anyone saw jensen using consoles in the game ?!?! NO, its PC , always . hahaha

@devastion913 consoles hardware is never greater than current pc hardware. there are some games that do look, and play, like crap on pc. but thats because they are ports. any game actually developed for the pc (even same year as a new generation of consoles) will always out preform a box

WiteLite

i have this game for pc, and though i like the art style....really wish they had made better use of dx11 and tessellation. i was little disappointed when i first started it up. then again, once you start playing it...omg, the story and gameplay are amazing, so it doesnt really matter

I dont have anything against consoles, people love them, its simple, works, you can have fun ,BUT , FPS games, I just cant get it, I mean, movement is so slow. I used to play quake alot, and, guys, you know what I mean hehe. its just too slow, and usually when I watch console gameplays, I can easily smoke pack of smokes in one hour haha

rezarazor

@ "don't really notice huge differences. Then again i don't judge games on graphics. i judge them on how they're meant to be judged, which is by gameplay! " who are you kiddin ? gameplay is one important side but graphic is in same place of importance ... everybody knows crysis 1 was a fantastic game because of combination of a great and entertaining gameplay + an Eye-catching visuals that make you dont wanna leave the enviroment .
