Deus Ex getting DLC augmentation in October

Square Enix's cyberpunk action adventure picking up The Missing Link add-on next month; pricing, platforms TBA.

Following the row surrounding Deus Ex, GameStop, and OnLive, it seems likely Square Enix would be happy to shift the conversation back to positive developments for its cyberpunk action game. That chance came today, as the publisher announced Deus Ex will receive its first downloadable content release this October with The Missing Link.

The Missing Link is a bit like The Hangover, but with fewer strippers and more neural augmentations.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD

The Missing Link follows up on events that transpire during the full version of Deus Ex, in which Adam Jensen goes mysteriously AWOL for a three-day period. Square Enix describes this episode as a time when Jensen has lost his augmentation powers and must escape a freighter using only the abilities nature gave him.

The Missing Link introduces a handful of new characters and enemies that play into the game's storyline. Square Enix also played up the add-on's opportunity to rebuild Jensen's augmentations from scratch.

END SPOILERS

Square Enix did not announce pricing information for the downloadable add-on. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's review.

Sure people can argue about whether they had time to put it in, but if anyone's paid any attention to what the developers have said then people would realise that absolutely tonnes got cut out of this game to meet deadlines and quality standards. Like when scenes are cut from films this was most likely cut from the game as it was an easier section of story to remove and work around. Let's not also forget about the 3 city hubs the had to cut, (Upper Hengsha, Montreal and India) one of which is a finished environment. There's potentially more DLC coming by the looks of it, all I can ask is that the price is cheap.

@earlmccormick88 - The game went gold before the release. They had enough time to develop this DLC. DLC is meant to expand the game's content. Not to milk customers and dominate the world. But still, expansions like bloodmoon, da:awakening ,would be much, MUCH better than DLC, just because they are so much bigger.

@Henrique2324 I'm also pirate scum...and just when I start buying "Certain" games again to support the companies hard work, stuff like this happens. Greedy gaming companies milking the heck out of people with no remorse because either A) consumer just don't give a crap and really doesn't think twice about buying the DLC or B) The consumer is thirsty for MOAR that he/she is kinda forced(for the lack of a better word) to buy the DLC.. This was suppose to be in the game anyway...they had plenty of time. So that means what? Oh

i'm not a fan of dlc unless it is done well and clearly something new like oblivion's dlc. i cant lie after finishing the game i needed more so i started playing it again. some new missions wouldn't hurt not sure of the loss of powers thing though. maybe some new powers that carry over to the main game?

This is actually a DLC I want to buy, considering how great the game was and its potential for expansion. And @ dj_puleserfan, what exactly in this DLC was said to be in the original game? Enlighten me please.

my only things that bugged me was the hud glitch which forced me to restart, the wtf ending and the little fact that the tranquilizer rifle sometimes kills.

...yeaaaaaaaaaaaa... Obnoxious retcon aside, unless this is something substantial (read as: not something i can finish in a single two hour play session)(or free) these guys can go F themselves...

Know what's funny? This is introducing stuff that interviews months ago confirmed would be in the original game. I can't believe the amount of people defending this crap.

@jollybest1 Agreed when I get an RPG I try to do as much as possible. Usually I'll do the main quest, stop do side quest till I get bored then continue the main quest. Rinse and repeat until I beat the game. If the game is good enough for me to want to play it again then I make sure to do everything.

I hope the DLC is not a bunch of short missions like ME2's. Other than the one about the Shadow Broker, most of ME's DLC was spotty. More devs need to learn from Bethesda and they DLC for Oblivion, and Fallout games.

if you play the game as you should you will finish it in 23 or more hours this is the time that most gamers play it and i did finish it in 25 hours and not because i've died a lot but because i've tried to play it like i should to understand the story to find as much as i can and i did not skip any dialog, maybe i did not find all of the side quests but 80% of the side quests i did finish ...why play rpg games if you skip the dialog ?.......Jeez

Im trading in my copy today. I finished it last nite and had previously planned on doing several playthroughs....... til I saw the ending!!! LAME what a cop out, it was pretty much one big lapdance. Dont tell me they couldnt have created a patch to give the game a decent ending while the disks were being made... On the upside I just found resident evil directors cut in the psn game store : )

why complain about downloadable content ? Its good thing, they put game out, game is great, now they had time to polish this extra parts , its gonna be good addition. and for money ... 60 bucks for a good game like this is nothing, you will spend time playing it, you wont go out , spend money on alcohol, whatever you do... hehe. and now with this DLC, im gonna go for it. save money again, BUT, only 'downside' , when theres dialog, I need to light cigarette, but thats OK cause JENSEN smokes !! and drinks, so , you can buy bottle of liquor, still , its cheaper than going out :)

Anyways, aside my rant, I think Deus Ex: Human Revolution is the game to beat the original. It was a vast improvement over Invisible War (which dumbed down the series a little), and the game has a lot of replay value, what with the vast pool of augmentations and good side quests, but I was slightly disappointed by the length. I found it to be quite short. Though, I do plough through games fairly quickly, so there's no surprise.

I have seen many developers release downloadable content with their products. Sometimes the original game is not substantial enough to be even worth the purchase and then they wish to increase their revenue with several downloadable maps that make little advancements in terms of gameplay (cough COD cough). Deus Ex is one of those games that has packed in lots of gameplay which is more than enough to keep the average gamer busy and now they wish to add a little cherry to the cake. But I can't help thinking that Square are going to charge a little more than suitable price for this content because after all they are having financial problems and their reports show they need a steady stream of income which they don't have. Trying to gain every penny is not something I admire.

DanielL5583

Why the hell is everyone complaining about the fact that there is DLC for a game that's been released nigh-on two weeks? It's stupid. For one, a game may be fully packaged; the DLC acts as a sort of expansion for anyone who wants to keep playing, but with a little more material. For another, there are games with really good DLC. Fallout 3 and Burnout Paradise are examples of games with great DLC. Lastly, if the developers want to continue making stuff for their game, then let them be. We're not a governing body that prevents them from doing so. If they want to work with new material, then whatever.

@Maleek2K8 Actually I've hit the 37 hours mark, and I'm still in the middle of Shengsha chapter (2nd city). Sure, I've been looking for every little thing, and making several trips to sell stuff I find, inclding weapons. But is there any other way to play, if you want to take full advantage of the money you spent in the game??

games shouldnt get dlc 2 months after release. dlc should make a game hang around longer, not just make you pay for something that should included with the releases. This goes for all games. I will not buy DLC for games for this reason.

is it only me , but I think that this game is short ?!? when I came to the end, I was disappointed, I thought everything else was warmup . Now Im playing first one. Feels good .

How dare they release content while people are still playing and still care about the game. You bunch of whining little children are right, they should wait until the game has been out for a year or two and then release DLC.

@doraemon1987 The game went gold a month before they shipped it out to distributors. That's plenty of time for them to make extra content using primarily resources they already had.

'doraemon1987 Posted Sep 3, 2011 8:11 pm GMT oh look, dlc a month F***ing later.....im sry but the game just came out, why didnt you include this on release...oh right thats it, you want to rip people off....... *goes to torrent site*' The game went gold a month before it was released, they could of easily been working on this since then (Depending on when its released up to 3 months)

the game should have new game + or some bonus after you finished the game. sad but only Kojima knows how to do a spy game with everything I want to see in this genre.

So basically everything the devs said about time being tight and had to make cuts for the game results in just an excuse to take out stuff that should of been in the game to begin with. What a shame.... If this is a short piece of DLC for double the price, I might not even bother getting it.

Im sure this could have easily been in the actual game itself. I hate DLC so much, for the most part anyway.

Just look at Just cause 2 pumping out tons of weapon, vehicle DLCs duh :) This pumping out DLC trend is no way good for customers cos it might have been cut off from original games (Mass effect 2 what a shameless game that is. ; EA grabbed bioware by the balls and customers' also.) anyway, if it's that 2 hour long DLC and cost about 6 bucks, really small number of ppl will buy, that's for sure. I am not dissing off DLC as a whole, if the original game is well done like DE HR ( not completely sure but contents/ gameplay itself so far is quite good for current day other game's customer deceiving techniques i.e. ) appropriate length for price DLC wouldn't be that much of a bad thing. Hopefully DLC is substantial for its price, and tbh expansion

Kayweg

Funny how the same crowd entering the whole preorder madness then come out and are miffed about immediate DLC. Month' in advance SE knew they were gonna earn a killing with DE:HR. Knowing that, you think they gonna pour much more ressources into main game content, bug fixing and polishing ? Like hell they will. They'll focus on cashing in on the pre-release hype and make DLCs their top priority. Publishers got you by the balls until the preorder trend reverses. And i think it's safe to predict that it won't. (Personally i don't even buy new games anymore until the first patch is released)

deus ex was an amazing game, at least a 9 out of ten. only 3 complaints. the real scene endings werent very good, you shouldnt take a visual masterpeice and end it with old videos. companies need to stop advertising with amazing video footage that isnt actually in the game. like the first few trailers for deus. and companies shouldnt come out with dlc that they couldve easily added into the game to make an extra buck, it makes customers feel cheated.

DLC/Expansions are supposed to be like the GTAIV expansions or how things used to be in the old days, where'd you pay the price for a almost a full game but the expansion was HUUUUGE. If this is $10 and 5 minutes long then oh boy no one better buy it.
