Destiny's Companion App Aims to Be Helpful -- Will You Use It?

Developer Bungie is looking to make a companion app that's useful and practical for its upcoming loot-based shooter.

In the past few years, many apps for phones and tablets have been released that communicate with a game in some way. Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Battlefield 4, and Dead Rising 3 all have dedicated companion apps that aim to extend the game experience beyond the TV screen. Bungie, the developer of Destiny, is joining this trend and trying to make an app that's helpful and useful for players.

According to IGN, the mobile app will bring a wealth of character management options, including the ability to change armor in the app and have the game respond instantly. Your character is rendered in a 3D model in the app, as well. You will also be able to monitor your inventory and check out the loot you've acquired on missions. Vendors in Destiny's hub, the Tower, will also show up in the app, so you can see who is selling what.

The app also acts as a compendium of Destiny's lore. The Grimoire allows you to read about the characters, places, and events you come across during your playthrough of the game.

Destiny's companion app launches on iOS and Android when the game's closed beta test goes live this week for Playstation 4 and PlayStation 3, and next week for Xbox 360 and Xbox One. On iOS, only an iPhone version will be available during the beta, but when the game releases fully, the app will get an iPad version. It is compatible with all versions of the game, across Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, and PS4.

If you have a code, you can play Destiny's beta on PS4 and PS3 on July 17, and on Xbox 360 and Xbox One on July 23. According to recent rumors, the beta will include four story chapters and competitive multiplayer. The full game launches on September 9.

What do you think of Destiny's companion app? Will you use it? Let us know in the comments!

I love the companion app trend honestly. I enjoy getting in there, tweaking gear, messing with stats, all from a tablet so when I am in the game I am focused on playing. The lore is a nice touch, I might actually read some deeper game lore now, I rarely spend time on that sort of thing in front of the TV.

Before you guys make comments and complain you should actually watch the video and get your facts in order. The app isn't meant to be used while you're playing the game, you can simply just use the game... It's for when you're on the go and wanna make changes and view stats for when you do log on to see what you should be doing next. You won't actually be required to use the app at all if you don't want to.

Does anyone know if my beta code that I received for pre-ordering the Destiny PS4 bundle will work on PS3?

I dont want to be playing with a tablet while im trying to play my ps4...these apps are seriously lame

Absolutely! This looks extremely useful and supportive for players when they're away from their console but still want to focus on the game - ie commuting to work, can work on loadout or read up on lore.

Oh look! Now there putting destiny on tablets. I was so psyched for this game till they announced the pc version wasn't coming out till next year. I'm so sick of developers snubbing pc gamers for extra money from console makers. I don't want to play this on my xbox 360 and I'm not going to waste my money on a new xbox one or ps4 for better graphics when I have a 2000$ pc. Here's an idea, maybe instead of wasting time on these stupid apps that 10% of players will maybe use once. Try to finish getting the game released on all platforms first. I can't wait till consoles become obsolete. With the cheap tech we have today consoles are a very outdated way of gaming and a complete money grab.

I don't know who came up with the idea of companion apps, but they need to be slapped. Companion apps aren't practical, they force you to switch between the controller and phone or tablet mid-game. I don't feel like they add depth, just make things more complicated, and quite frankly, annoying.

Companion apps seem like a great idea in theory, but then it can be annoying to have to put down the controller and grab the tablet, switch back and forth, putting you off from using it.

A character management companion app for Destiny seems useful. I'm more likely to use it than the tacked on tablet apps that other games have.

No. I think the only way I'll use it is if they've made the in-game navigation systems purposefully harder to use. I see no reason to boot up an app to see things a pause screen has shown me for decades. Maybe I'm just old fashioned but I see no use for these second screen experiences.

Hell yeah I'll use it ! I loved the companion app for Dead Island Riptide. Had it going the whole time I played. Effectively giving me a second screen on my ipad.

I'd like to see a PC version.  That way I could poke around the gameworld while on my work lunch.

Am likely to download it on a blue moon... then never actually use it.

Well, it is optional. So all you people complaining about the creation of it, just don't use it. End of story. Think of it as bungie going the extra mile for their peeps, it's free so what's the harm? Jeez...

FemmeFox

If it works like Libra Eorzea does for FFXIV it'll be really handy. Item, weapon and armour info. NPC's and their locations or quests available in a few screen taps. Place names and navigation.

I also think it'd be quite cool to be able to customise a load out on my lunch break or on the way home ready to jump right I to the game the moment I'm home.

And who doesn't wanna show off their new badass loot? It's MUCH easier to screenshot on a mobile than it is to capture and upload from a console.

Seems like some people are misunderstanding: all these options are in game, app is extra and optional.

Um, maybe I'm missing the point here, but why on earth would we need a second program running on a second device for something like what is described in the article?

Couldn't that, y'know, be just added as something you could look at in-game through a menu or something? What on earth is the point of something like this?

I personally like companion apps. I like being engaged in the community and having the ability to view my load-outs/player progression when i'm not playing.

I find companion apps so stupid and ridiculous. Are people so addicted, that they can't be doing something else when not gaming?

I weep for mankind...

@dustdevil15 YES, it will.   That is what the page says.    Log in to bungie.net and "redeem code" for the beta.  and select your platform.   You can do that now.    You'll get a code by email tomorrow (they say) and that will let you actually play the game.   So you have to get your beta code hooked up with your bungie.net ... around now.

I'm pretty clear on this answer as my white system will ship in September, and I plan to play the Beta on my PS3.

If it disappoints me like BF3, cancel at no cost.    I really *want* to be impressed, and happy, with my purchase.

@dustdevil15

If you've already registered your beta code you should have already received n email from Bungie with a link to where you choose your system for the beta, if you haven't registered it yet then you can do so at any time. Regardless of what system you preordered on you can choose any platform you want although once you choose you can only use your codes on that system. You get 3 codes so that you can give a couple to friends to start your own fireteam. Also make sure that if you live anywhere outside of the US to choose Europe or your codes won't work. Just read the FAQ's if you have any questions on that.

@Dragon240sx then it looks like you won't be playing Destiny until next year, that's all I got out of the nonsense you just wrote lol

gokartmozart89
gokartmozart89

@Dragon240sx App developers =/= game developers.

The app is NOT taking resources away from a PC port. And be careful what you wish for. I'd expect a sloppy and unoptimized port from Activision. Bungie doesn't do the porting. At least they didn't with Halo 1 (that was Gearbox before they became famous for BIA and Borderlands). In fact, Bungie was mostly a Mac developer before MSFT bought them for Xbox.

gokartmozart89
gokartmozart89

@Daveof89 This particular app isn't necessarily meant to be used while playing the game. And it's not that different from having your computer or laptop on next to you while you're playing.

I get Sony will make that happen. They've been fantastic about everything this gen so far

ccusick

@FemmeFox But isn't that what the SHARE button is for?   There was a big to-do about that button at E3 2013.   My white PS4 won't arrive til September, so I have no share button.  But, honestly, I think I'd use a companion app more than the share button.   I'm older... and I don't share much because I believe nobody much cares.   ((I share with my wife and kids, but I do that the old fashioned way.... by talking. ))

so, digression aside, serious question:

Does anyone use the ps4 share button to share????

@pezzott1

Ah. Good to know. I wasn't really grasping that detail. Thanks. I still probably wouldn't do it. I'm perfectly content being "in the game" when I'm playing and being in whatever other moment that I'm in, whether it's out on a date or watching a movie or at a football game or whatever, when I'm not.

But you at least clarified the selling point a bit better for me. Thanks.

I dony really see the purpose of it being for when your away from the game

@Evil_Sidekick I don't think they are bad. Maybe someone is at work and on their 10 minute break and has nothing to do. Gives those people who play Destiny (and other games) something they can do even if they aren't in front of the game. On my work breaks when I have nothing to do, I turn on the Watch Dogs app and play with people.

@unreal849 When you are waiting in game lobbies you can check what the vendors in the tower have or admire your acquired loot, I think it is cool

melgreen93

@gokartmozart89 did you even watch the actual video on the walkthrough of the app? The app isnt meant to be used while you're playing the game, you can simply just use the game... It's for when you're on the go and wanna make changes and view stats for when you do log on.

Daveof89
Daveof89

@mattress805 You're crazy if you think that'll actually happen... Sony has little to do with it. The devs are the ones that would be making the app, and they are not going to waste extra time/money on such a small market when just about everyone has a phone.

FemmeFox
FemmeFox

Well that's what I mean by it being faster to screenshot on mobile. On PS4 I've gotta take the shot, open Capture Gallery, find the picture, pick whether I wanna upload it to Facebook or Twitter, choose whether I want it to be Public/Friends/Private and to maybe write something to go with it.

I love taking screenshots and recording footage on PS4 but I wait until I'm done playing, move everything to a memory stick and upload in bulk. It's faster and easier and I can customise albums and the like too.

But if I wanna just quickly show my new gear I just acquired then I'd use the App.

JTYooper
JTYooper

@Bazongaman502 @Evil_Sidekick That's exactly what I would do if there was a PC version.  Check in on things while eating lunch at work, or when the family is watching TV.

ccusick
ccusick

@FemmeFox I also looked at this article's title again.   And it says they are "looking to make" a companion app.   Thus, I was kind of surprised when I saw that the app is on Google play, right now.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bungieinc.bungiemobile

So, you know... instead of reading about it, you can just see for yourself.

There's more info here:   http://www.bungie.net/en/Companion and you can see the iOS version linked there as well.  Looking forward to the start of the beta.
