Destiny Beta Starts Tomorrow on PS3, PS4 -- Pick Up The Free Companion App Now

Bungie releases app on iTunes and Google Play; beta kicks off tomorrow on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.

Halo creator Bungie has released the free companion app for its upcoming shooter Destiny, which will be playable for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 owners tomorrow in beta form. The Destiny app, as previously detailed, is free.

You can download it today from either iTunes or Google Play. The app, which Bungie hopes is a helpful option for players, shows a 3D version of your character and you can change armor and have the game respond instantly.

The app also lets you monitor your inventory and check out the loot you've acquired on missions. It also serves as a compendium of Destiny's lore, allowing you to read about the game's characters, locations, and events as you trek through the world.

On top of that, the Destiny companion app lets you access forums, groups, and private messaging so you can stay in touch with your comrades. Lastly, the app will contain the latest news and updates about Destiny.

The Destiny beta begins tomorrow, July 17, for PS3 and PS4, before coming to Xbox 360 and Xbox One on July 23. The beta ends on July 27. To guarantee yourself a spot in the beta, you'll need to preorder a copy of the game.

Just a day before the beta's arrival tomorrow, Bungie has not yet said what Destiny players can expect from it. However, it is rumored to contain four story missions, four multiplayer maps, a cooperative Strike, and more. Bungie also recently revealed that it has not yet decided if the progress you make in the beta will carry forward to the full game when it arrives on September 9.

This isn't really much of a beta since you have to preorder the game to play it. It's more like you get the game after buying it like normal, but then they take it away after a week or two. A real beta for an MMO should have some sort of stress test for connectivity, which you can only achieve with a free, open beta test. This is just some crap marketing ploy.

Console exclusives for alphas/betas are so stupid.

Sounds like a properly handy app, letting you get the tedious stuff done when you're out 'n' about, and letting you get on with the good stuff when you get home.

Slightly regretting not getting a pre-order in right about now.

Might download, but only because it is a compendium for the lore.

Not going within a million miles of this until the dust settles and I see what's actually going on.

Will be interesting to read the incoming shitstorm though - it's sure to be amusing.

Is there no pre-load for the beta?  Hate to wait until tomorrow and have to wait for the install but I don't see any pre-load options.

@hotwog21 i didn't pre order anything and i got an access code in my email last night, game is awesome!

@hotwog21 Not entirely true. If you pre-order the physical copy of the game from Gamestop, you can later cancel that order, and get your money back. And, there's a difference between pre-ordering, and pre-PAYING. I had no problem dropping $10 for a pre-order on the physical copy when i bought my PS4 from Gamestop. But no way would I EVER put $60 out for a game before I know more about it.

Unfortunately, if you are going digital(which I'm really starting to wonder why consoles keep trying) I don't think you can cancel the pre-order through Sony.

@ZERO_X02 well said, im copy pasting and haters are gonna hate, or should i say lambs are gonna fleece them selves.

@ZERO_X02  well they had the alpha on ps4, lots of people were on it. kinda stress tested it there. i wouldn't really say this was an MMO., its an MMO if you think borlderlands with persistant online is an MMO...then it is. the multilplayer is the same as watchdogs. it was never stated to be an mmo

just pre order on the psn store, if you don't have your billing info in..they can't charge you. so you get into the beta free.

@MaddenBowler10  That's the whole point of consoles. If consoles didn't have exclusive stuff ,why would I buy one? I would just play everything on my PC. I didn't waste $400 on my PS4 just so a PC user can get the same stuff.

Kinguard73
Kinguard73

@ecurl143  well if you got into the beta you'd get an idea what is going on. I am not into FPS but I always buy one of them (not stupid enough to buy almost the exact same game every year like those behind CoD) This could be that game easily.

@ecurl143 What exactly are you referring to? What's this "going on" that you're talking about?

@kieranparkin @ZERO_X02 when you say watchdogs you really mean dark souls seeing as thats where those elements originated. do you even praise the sun?

Kinguard73
Kinguard73

@Sun-Tzu-GE @MaddenBowler10  except for 400 dollars you can play much more than dos based games on a PC for 400 dollars. Not to mention consoles likely came to be because PC was always a more expensive option and it's still far easier to steal a PC game compared to a Console one unless they are online 24/7.
