Del Toro 'not giving up' on InSane

Filmmaker "talking to developers" about getting back to work on game; says Valve is a dream developer for project.

Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro is "not giving up" on his action game trilogy InSane. THQ officially canceled the game in August, but del Toro told Kotaku recently that discussions are underway to bring the game to market.

"When something doesn't happen in one way, I just continue pursuing it in another way. I own the property and I control it. I'm not giving up on InSane," he said.

Del Toro was asked which studio would be a "dream developer" for InSane, and he responded with Half-Life and Left 4 Dead company Valve. He said he is a "big fan" of the outfit.

InSane was to be a collaborative effort between del Toro and Saints Row studio Volition. It was not expected to arrive for another two or three years. For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage of InSane.

Hopefully he finds a competent developer.  I mean, I loved THQ, but they are on their way out.  They are making the same stupid decisions that Midway did towards the end.

Guillermo del Toro is an amazing director, a huge comic book lover, his monster designs are amazing and will fight for what he thinks is best for his project (he spent 2 years arguing to get Ron pearlman the roll of hellboy a great choice)

i never realised he was involved but this games just gone on my list to watch

Nothing wrong with going to Valve.  Thank god he doesn't want to go to Activision, EA, or Capcom.

Whoah, whoah, whoah... hold the phone. Valve still makes games?! Sure doesn't feel like it nowadays.

Del Toro is one of my favorite people.  He is just so passionate with every project he does.  He comes across as so genuine and down to earth.    a breath of fresh air when so many people in his line of work are so cynical and machine-like.

Good luck on getting Valve to work on an IP they don't own.

When Valve makes a game, they OWN the game. There's no such thing as a Valve licensed game.

I didn't really trust Volition anyways. They make fun games, but I would love to see a more quality developer like Valve working with Del Toro.

Just reading this was enough for me to need a change of pants.

It's good that a letdown like the cancellation of a game doesn't push him off. I guess that's why he is successful in lots of ways.

Wow this is the coolest news I've heard in a while. When it was previously announced that said that Insane was canned, I remember saying I was disappointed because I love Del Toro's relentless attention to detail. It's great to see his intentions on getting the game off the ground are just as relentless. It's even better that he wants to work with Valve. That's a match made in heaven.

Am sure valve would love to collaborate with Mr. Del Toro. Valve has a good eye for talent and quality.

If this happens it could be amazing. Kinda worried about the potential problems the similarities with inFamous' logo could create, though.

@mattcake Counter Strike Global Offensive came out a few months ago and DOTA 2 is nearing release.

@hippiesanta Funny. I didn't see any gameplay suggesting it's a FPS or even a shooter for that matter. You're talking about Valve, so show some respect. Not some lazy dev group like NaughtyDog

Lhomity

@Granpire Except they're developing Dota 2 and have already trademarked the name of the Warcraft 3 mod they never had a hand in.

crazycat690

@The_GooBear  HEY! WOW! Some "lazy dev group like Naughty DoG"? You're some piece of work, there's so many other studios to choose from and you chose to accuse Naughty Dog of being lazy? Naughty Dog deserve respect too, the creator of Crash, Jak and Daxter, Uncharted and the Upcoming The Last of Us, none of their titles does only one thing, they always do something different with their games. Lets compare with the recent Valve games, TF2, a straight up multiplayer shooter, and unless you count buying tons of hats as innovative there's not much new nor different in that game. You're calling Naughty Dog lazy when you say respect Valve? Valve didn't create CS, someone modded Half Life, that's a familiar story with Valve.Don't really wanna disrespect Valve, but to have the balls to say that about Naughty Dog at the same time you act like your favorite dev do automatically deserve respect you just seem like a idiot. Or a troll, did I just spend 7 min feeding a shitty troll? Think I did, well I'll post this comment anyway, just 'cause..

Granpire
Granpire

@Lhomity Except they hired the developer that made the original mod. So they OWN the game, like I said.

Similar stories happened Portal, Left 4 Dead, and Counter Strike. Unless Del Toro joins Valve, he won't be able to make this game. And considering it's just a film director's idea of a game where players "where every single action makes [players] question their own senses of morality and reality", and the the man has no experience in game development, it's not something Valve will support.

Valve has only ever hired developers that have something to show for themselves, and Del Toro is no more qualified to be a game designer than you or I.

oldschoolvandal

@PS2fweak Forgive my ignorance but I have no idea of what you meant....

crazycat690
crazycat690

@i-like-me  @The_GooBear It's not an opinion to contradict fact, fact is Naughty Dog is NOT a lazy dev, they're quite busy. I'd say Valve, doesn't matter if they're brilliant or not, are indeed lazy compared to any other big developer simply because their quite "laid back" attitude. Sure, it's a good attitude in the end, but it's also the reason we've seen nothing of HL3 yet.

Granpire
Granpire

@PS2fweak  @Lhomity I disagree. The kinds of narratives that films can tell are very different from the kinds that games can tell. Writing, directing, and producing don't have exact equivalents in game design, and they take a different kind of experience.

PS2fweak
PS2fweak

@Granpire  @Lhomity Yeah, but we have no idea what Valve would do in a situation like this. We also have no idea how they feel about someone as talented as Guillermo del Toro. He's far more qualified to be a game designer than you or I. He could write, direct, and produce it. He just needs a team to develop it.

@oldschoolvandal  @PS2fweak It's a forum language thing(for lack of better name). It means they agree with you, to the point that you took the words out of their mouths.
