DeathSmiles on US Xbox 360

Aksys localizing Cave's side-scrolling bullet hell shooter, complete with multiplayer online mode.

Japanese developer Cave is notorious for its distinct brand of frenetic shoot-'em-ups, but few outside the studio's island nation home have had the chance to play efforts like DoDonPachi or Espgaluda. To date, the company's biggest Western release has been the quirky 2001 PlayStation 2 skateboarding title Yanya Caballista: City Skater.

Keeping the world safe from giant apples with mouths.

That could change soon, as Aksys Games confirmed this week that it will bring Cave's DeathSmiles to North America. Originally released in Japan in April last year, the Xbox 360 side-scrolling shoot-em-up carries a "gothic-lolita" theme and allows players to fight the forces of the sinister "Imperator Tyrannosatan" with one of four angels. In addition to weaving between bullet barrages, players will have to switch the direction they face in order to take on enemies from all sides.

DeathSmiles will feature a branching level structure that lets players determine not only their path through the game but also the difficulty of each level. Additionally, the game will include a replay system to let players preserve and share particularly death-defying runs, as well as two-player cooperative play over Xbox Live.

No local co-op is a disappointment. So that means you have to buy two copies. One ok two no way.

I like, wish this was on ps3 also.

Local Coop > Xbox Live Very disappointing that there is no local co-op....that's pretty much a no brainer (not just for this title, but countless others as well) and it seems like more and more devs are completely ignoring it.

oh thank god, i thought the headlines were: "Death smiles on US Xbox 360s." haha my bad. I love these kind of games though, its a really good idea to have this game as an XBLA title. Im getting this.

this would be really cool as an XBLA game, that's what I assumed it was going to be, but from what I've read elsewhere this is going to be a retail disc game; Brendan Sinclair should have mentioned that because I think that's going to weigh on peoples' decisions to get it

I've just got the Japanese import for $70. The hi-res graphics is an excellent upgrade from the arcade. Also check out Konami's Otomedius and BTW Afterburner Climax is also being ported. The 360 crowd in Japan is tiny and they're all core gamers. Not that I complaining as long as I get my SHMUP fix.

Espgaluda was great, but I had a hard time keeping up with whats on the screen and died alot. Since this is in HD and I don't have to pay the $80 to import it; its a must buy for me.

When I read this, I didn't see the space and I thought that death was smiling on the 360 and it was going to die.

I only wish there was a PS3 version.

if tim burton ever decided he wanted to make a shooter it would look like this.

It looks like fun, albeit a bit obscure. I love a good Shoot-em-up and am always looking for something to dethrone Ikaruga. Doubt this will, but it could be a nice distraction.

@ VexnadDanger: Me too! I thought this article had something to do with red ring of death or something.

I do love a good 'bullet hell' game. Thank goodness for the Arcade/Live/whatever market, where quality niche games can survive and thrive.

sounds really interesting, i liked shadow complex and that was a sidescrolling shooter, hope they use similar controls maybe. just a really interesting idea and i hope its done really well.

looks interesting, but I hope they throw in offline co-op. It would be a shame if they didn't. Tyrannosatan= Satanic Tyrant? Tyrannical Satan?

I was expecting a very different story from reading the title "death smiles on xbox 360".

I wish this was on PSN. Weird how the 360 in Japan became this odd platform for decidedly Japanese niche titles like DeathSmiles, Dream C Club or ports of visual novels like Clannad. You'd think those games would sell better on PS3 or Wii, but I guess it's a matter of production cost and the 360 is easier to develop for.
