Deadbreed is a darker MOBA from a former Just Cause developer

The former Just Cause developer describes Deadbreed as a darker, more "hardcore" MOBA with RPG elements.

by

A group of veteran game developers in Sweden including former Just Cause developer Stefan Ljungqvist have formed a new game studio, Deadbreed, and announced a new Multiplayer Online Battle Arena by the same name.

Deadbreed, which you can currently vote for on Steam Greenlight, describes the game as a fast-paced, "hardcore" MOBA. It will feature online matches between two teams of three, allowing you to play against other players or AI opponents. Players will be able to choose between nightbreed, halfbreed, and daybreed hero types, which they can level up during matches. As in Dota 2, Deadbreed will also include an item crafting system.

“Talking to friends, I realized I wasn't the only one wanting this, so we decided to make it," Ljungqvist said in a press release. "Also, this was our chance to make a darker themed MOBA for hardcore gamers like ourselves and bring in some additional RPG gameplay features.”

You can read more about Deadbreed, watch the announcement trailer, and sign up for the beta on the game's official site.

I applaud this, it targets a whole new audience with the MOBA not being so cartoony like LoL and Dota2, and I will def give this shot

To everyone hating on MOBA gaming, get over yourselves you are sounding like "the elitiests" you seem to hate so much. Not everyone likes the same games get over it.

On topic: all aboard the milk wagon.

Yea can we please not do this. WoW proved the MMO genre could be a cash extravaganza and so everyone and their dog made an MMO. DOTA 2 and LoL are super successful so now everyone and their dog is going to make a MOBA.

Here's an idea: make a real game, please, not this trash.

My wish list for a new Moba game: Fix the community. That is all... I'm tired of the "it's everyone else but me" mentality of the gamers in there (not everyone, but it seems like 1/5 gamers have that attitude...).

Oh I see...it's a more HARDCORE MOBA...gotta love the bandwagon.

MOBAs are a disgrace.  I hate to be a part of that whole "whine about them" crowd, but it's true.  It's a genre born out of nothing else but pure elitism and pay-to-win type of marketing.  Competitive Call of Duty is something I can live with, but we're talking about turning something very close to an RPG into an actual sport -- doesn't that sound kinda ridiculous?  I mean...what's next?  Is Baldur's Gate going to be a televised sport next?  Are we going to start developing games with e-sports in mind now, designing them around the e-sports community?  I thought we were trying to fight the "casualization" of the video game hobby, not pay people to play casual type games.

I don't really understand all the bitching and whining. The MOBA genre has plenty of room to expand. If you don't like MOBAs then quit paying attention to them.

I don't know why other studios are trying to make MOBAs. They just won't be successful, Lol players will stick with Lol. As in my case, they might try them out for a bit (like I did with Dota 2) and go back to Lol.

If a studio as successful as Valve can't make a game a fraction as successful as League, there is no hope for shitty lil studios.

I must be one of the few people out there that doesn't understand the appeal of MOBA's. I gave DOTA2 a go and just found it tedious. Eh not like I'm being forced to play them.

These games are decent fun, but the communities are horrible. It's like playing a game of pick-up basketball where most of the players are that guy who thinks he's going to be in the NBA.

"Well, we ran the FPS genre into the ground.....AND the MMORPG's too.....what else can we saturate the market with till no one wants one anymore..... I KNOW!!!!! MOBAs!!!!!"

Make a game you want, not the ones that are the least common denominator and it'll probably be a good game. See Dark Souls for instance. They make the game they want first, then get rich...

“Talking to friends, I realized I wasn't the only one wanting this, so we decided to make it," HA! worst reason to do anything ever. I know people I hang around also have the same tastes as me, but my friends and I aren't representative of the whole population.

I wish them luck, but this just sounds like they are trying to get in before the MOBA profits run dry...

Does this mean MOBAs have replaced MMOs as the cash in genre ? With the massive amount of popularity and success League of Legends has, developers are trying to cash in the same way they tried with World of Warcraft.

"Talking to friends, I realized I wasn't the only one wanting this, so we decided to make it" And talking to your friends you might come up with the idea to start a micro-brewery but with both ideas the market is already flooded with so many other brands and every idiot thinks they can make a quick buck off of it.

I'm confused.  You cannot make a "more hardcore" MOBA - Dota is the most hardcore MOBA that exists.  Nothing is more uncompromising than Dota.

First Stardock and now this. Stupid developers and brain dead all of them. Just following the MOBA trend like blind sheeps.

These developers dont care about making good games anymore. They just want fast money with microtransactions.

@MapleLeafKushNo, it's still cartoony as f**k, or at least as realistic as that Lord of the Rings moba. Because Emanuel here sais it's a darker, more "hardcore" moba with rpg elements, that doesn't mean that that's what it actually is. This is what you must do: be informed, read article, laugh at article.

Yea its like Call of Duty and how its uber popularity inspired a generation of FPS's. I guess whatever is super successful will be copied into oblivion LOL.

This. I'd much sooner learn to better play LoL with allies (yes pugs, so its diverse instead my few mates) than read guides or watch others play. Most game you get zero comm cept "all mid/Baron" or somebody COMPLETELY overbearing.

MarcJL31

@---Cipher--- 1 out of 5 is being too generous. I got into MOBA a little while ago and every game has someone who voted themselves the team expert. Pick their role first and then want to tell everyone else who to pick, what gear to get, ect. And lord forbid they die because someone is getting blamed for it. I have never experienced the frequency I do in MOBA and that's after dealing with the MMO elitist. Some days I play a game, let them do their thing so they feel special, and just say "Screw it, I'll try again tomorrow "because I don't feel like dealing with it.

@Fartman7998DotA, at least in my experience, isn't casual at all. Your right that a large part of the community seems to be elitist, but DotA is one that is not Pay to win. Anything from the store there is cosmetic (at least as far as I've seen). No heros are locked behind a paywall, no courier skins make it go faster, etc. The genre isn't the problem, it's the attitude surrounding the community imo as well as every developer trying to get in on the Moba money.

lannyboy334
lannyboy334

@Fartman7998 What you are ranting about both perplexes and amazes me.  DotA is clearly not pay-to-win, the genre is increasingly less elitist and people are getting fed up with that attitude, and calling DotA-esque games (since it is the original) casual is ridiculous.

catsimboy
catsimboy

@schu If only we could stop paying attention to them but all the stupid publishers see MOBAs as the next cash cow so they're taking non-MOBA series and making garbage MOBAs out of them to make a quick buck.

Don't forget the music genre plastic guitars and band instruments got ran into the ground as well. Its sad really anything that becomes even a little bit popular gets copied ad nauseam. Its like the game industry lost most of its originality.

@---Cipher---well as long they are running MOBAs to the ground they are not doing that to RPGs, which is fine by me, keep ruining other stuff, but leave the beloved RPG genre alone is what I say

@TimeFrame@Thanatos2k Nobody plays HoN anymore now that DotA 2 is out. LoL was designed to be a more casual DOTA while HoN was designed to be like DOTA. Even Icefrog, who helped make HoN, quit so he can do DotA 2.

Yea your right and RPG's could be the next genre up at bat with the two new next-gen RPG releases of The Witcher 3 and Dragon Age inquisition. If they sell really well like COD numbers then we could see a whole generation of RPG's.

@kage_53 @TimeFrame @Thanatos2k Hon was meant to be dota in its own engine so that you could vote pauses and kicks and keep track of stats etc. Near the end of its life everyone knew it was going down so s2 staff just started jumping ship oddly around the same time the game went f2p and new heroes became the weekly bit it is now. Back in its hay day though HoN was faster paced and "darker" than dota 2 will ever hope to be, and for better or worse the hon community was far more competitive and blood thirsty to the point it became the moba with the "worst" (as in most cruel) community known to rather play 4v5 matches than with a new player voting to kick them and talk crap nonstop.

Dota 2 is out Hon is hanging by a cash thread before it finnaly shuts down and LoL appeals to a completely different group of people than HoN and Dota 2 players.
