Dead Space free on Origin as the first title in EA's "On The House" promotion

Electronic Arts launches new free game promotion with Visceral Games' 2008 horror-action game.

Electronic Arts today made Visceral Games' 2008 horror-action game Dead Space free to download on Origin as part of its newly launched free game promotion called "On The House."

As part of the program, EA will offer up DLC and full games for free. It doesn't sound like EA is going to publish a schedule for when new games and content will be available, as the publisher said these deals can "appear and disappear at any time."

Once you've claimed your free game, it's yours to keep forever, EA said. Why is EA doing this? "We're gamers, too. We appreciate you making Origin your gaming home...and besides, who doesn't like free stuff?" the company said.

The most recent entry in the Dead Space series was 2013's Dead Space 3. After that game underperformed, it was reported that EA had killed off the series, but this later turned out to not be the case. Visceral Games is now working on an unannounced title in the Star Wars franchise.

I wish they put Dragon age 1 and 2 and Mass effect 1 and 2 also because i bought the game when they were securom and serial proctection before moving to origin. It would be nice for owners of those previous games to have a digital version for free. I already downloaded Dead Space 1 from this promotion i already own the retail version

Got that game already on Steam and PS3... and so shall you! go get it!

Don't feel guilty, you have to install ORIGIN.

Started using Origin last month for Titanfall, and now I get Dead Space for free? Awesome. I played the game when it first came out but never finished it, now I can.....even more sweet!

I downloaded it just  SO Ea will have to pay the associated royalties to who ever.

Well for one Dead Space is still broken with game breaking glitches, even when currently downloading off origin, so I see why they are giving that junk away. Two, Origin will never replace steam because of their very limited game selection. EA......just keep making broken games and leave the game distribution to the STEAM machine.

i would like the game, but  i'm not getting Origin :(

Hope Mass Effect 1 and Dragon Age Origins will be free in the future.

For some reason, that line reminded me of Petrus of Thorolund :P

Hello there.
I realize that I have requested that we retain our distance,
But I also want you to know that it is not meant in ill-will.
Here, take this. As a token of peace.
No, go ahead. It's for you.

Last year or so EA has been doing a lot of stuff to try and fix their image. If I'm not mistaken, they were the first ones to drop online passes. And it seems (I might be mistaken here, though) that Bioware is getting a lot of freedom in developing the next Mass Effect. All I can hopeis that all this is a genuine effort to regain the consumers trust, and not a PR stunt.

They do try, we gotta give 'em that, and it's a good thing. Who knows, we might even get our old dear EA back. It's not going to happen, isn't it?

I already have Origin because I play BF4, downloading Dead Space as I type this.

I hope EA keeps to improving for customers like this. I know that gamers are still going to complain about this, but hey, what can you do? But with that said I don't like the fact he said they can appear and disappear whenever. Does it mean they'll have no adverts on Origin or not?

But like @hornspiller said, competition is good. If Steam is the only company to distribute digitally then they can price games whatever they want.

I know there is still some sort of gamer concensus that steam should be the only digital purchasing platform for games. I believe that this is not in the best interest of gamers. Steam is owned by a profit driven company and monopolizing their grasp on the digitial market is unconsiderate to say the least.

The problem is that we don't have a developer independent platform to run in the background checking the authenticity of the games.

This "hub" should link to digital purchasing platforms like steam and origin, making the customer much better able to choose among different sellers and better review prices and deals.

If I wouldn't already own it on Steam I'd gladly pay the 2,50 EUR (in a sale) for it again on Steam just to save me from the trouble and annoyances of EA and Origin DRM.

The first one was the only good one anyways, after that EA had too much word in its development and the developers too much of a console and casual gamer oriented focus.

Just be aware that right after installing Origin DRM client you're automatically opted-in to allowing them to spy on you and analyze your hardware and every bit of software you have installed, perhaps even your browsing history for "analytical and customer relation improvement" purposes. (I assume their business practices haven't changed)

Visceral needs to be killed off, they're garbage.

@bloodraven951  In my personally experience the only reason i started using Origin is because i wanted the game Syndicate 2012 and Mass effect 3 and then i went to buy Sim City the only three games i own of Origin plus i don't like origin

Thanatos2k

@taker254isback It's not free - you have to install Origin.  To do that, you have to give away at least some personal info.

Dragon_Nexus
Dragon_Nexus

@taker254isback But I don't want it, so it's a horrible promotion OMG I HATE EVERYTHING.

Yeah, I agree, it's a full retail game offered for free. That people can complain about *getting something good for free* astounds me. Though I'd understand the dislike of Origin...

_Witchunter_
_Witchunter_

@spartanx169x  You didn't have to download it, you could've just added it to the list of games you own (or make it the first one, in my case).

@Tyberis1

you're a frustrated kid, I do not really like Origin but this game was one of the best games made these last 6 years and without doubt the best survival horror. OMG this haters If you don´t like why waste time here?

Dragon_Nexus
Dragon_Nexus

@Grimkillah That would be nice, they gave me Mass Effect 2 for free a couple of years back for buying Dragon Age 2.

spartanx169x

@EdAl2112 I can only guess they are doing it to earn back a little good will and to hopefully assist in selling the sequels for that series.

WereCatf

@acce-meza They're trying to get people to use Origin. It's rather simple, and it probably will work to an extent. Me? Hell no, I'm staying the fuck away from Origin.

PrpleTrtleBuBum
PrpleTrtleBuBum

@BohemiaDrinker I believe they are serious. After all Dead Space was a product of a new golden age for them along with Mirror's Edge, Crysis, Dragon Age, Skate etc.

But they have crashed back to their old ways before and I have no doubt it will happen again. At some point they get lazy and just want the money

@iamllamapie @hornspiller compitition is always good, but EA will always be bad as long as they are a public company

@bloody-hell

Actually your Steam key for Dead Space is redeemable on Origin so you got both, same for every EA title on Steam except for the first Crysis as far as I know.

@Thanatos2kPfft, I just made an account with a new e-mail. According to that account, I'm a 52 years old British male named Freddy McMahon. I didn't give any sort of personal info.

santinegrete
santinegrete

@MAD_AI @bloody-hell truth, I got Alice Madness Returns and Dead Space 2 because I registered them with the same EA account on Steam as in Origin.

bloody-hell
bloody-hell

@MAD_AI Thanks, I actually didn't know that, but then again I have no desire of wanting to have anything to do or having any kind of connection to EA - to me they're dead since 2008 when they started ruining good old franchises, "integrating" good independent developers, screwing everything up and annoying me with extra online, spyware DRM.

bloody-hell
bloody-hell

@Grimkillah No, because ...

1) I don't own "every EA game on Steam" because a vast majority of post-2008 EA titles are crap and pre-2008 titles aren't all available on Steam

2) It'd technically be the same license, just redeemable on a different platform and giving it away to another person would be a license violation

3) I consider myself saving an innocent individual from the evil that is EA by not giving people a reason to register there

Grimkillah
Grimkillah

@bloody-hell In that case, can I have all your free origin keys that come with every EA game on steam?

bloody-hell
bloody-hell

@Gordaton Ummh no, they have not. Care to explain ?

Steam and Stwamworks are not what I consider annoying DRM because it offers way more advantages for very little disadvantages, plus continuous awesome sales, they support indie developers and you have the choice to opt-in to hardware and software surveys if you want to.

Valve is not buying up development studios with the sole purpose of ruining and milking franchises and they're actually doing something for the better of PC gaming.

They're a privately owned company and don't have to jump off a cliff just because an investor says so.

This might read as something too fanboy-ish and Valve / Steam has a few flaws too, but in the grand scheme of things there are entire galaxies between Valve and EA, with Valve being on the positive side.
