Dead Rising 3 gets exclusive SmartGlass missions

"You're getting more out of the game" with mobile and tablet companion app, says Dead Rising 3 executive producer.

by

Xbox One open-world exclusive Dead Rising 3 will feature missions exclusive to players making use of Microsoft's mobile and tablet companion tool SmartGlass, Capcom has said.

In an interview with Siliconera, Capcom executive producer Josh Bridge sad that when playing the game, the SmartGlass app "actually skins your phone to be like the phone from the game's universe."

Bridge explained how the SmartGlass exclusive content would work in Dead Rising 3. Using an accompanying SmartGlass-compatible mobile or tablet, the player will "get calls from a character that are only on the SmartGlass device. So if you don't have SmartGlass, you won't get those calls from that guy. Which also means you won't get those missions."

Despite the exclusive missions, however, Bridge insists that players will get a complete story even if they choose not to use the SmartGlass functions. "His storyline is his own. And it interweaves with the main storyline. Without it, you're not losing out on what the story is. But you're getting more out of the game."

Dead Rising 3 was announced during Microsoft's E3 2013 press conference, where SmartGlass was also shown to call down an artillery strike on a clustered group of zombies. The game features a new city, Los Perdidos, alongside new protagonist Nick Ramos.

Microsoft's SmartGlass application can be installed on phones and tablets running iOS, Android, Windows Phone, and Windows 8.

Exclusive content for an exclusive game....*brain explodes*

Maybe I'm just a stick in the mud, but this seems more like a negative for me.  Seems like a waste of time and resources they could have used on the main game that most people will actually have access to.  I just hope this doesn't become a trend in more next-gen games.

The orginal was a 360 exclusive as well as the canon side games for the sequel so I don't see a point to complain.

I'm pissed that Capcom who stopped with the whole Exclusive stuff years ago is doing it again, I love this series a lot except unless it comes to the ps4 I won't get it. Capcom get your head out of Microshafts ass for a moment, realize your making a huge mistake keeping this game exclusive to xbone.

Damn Microsoft is really trying to take gaming to the next level like seriously

I hope we get rid of the time limit these games keep getting.

More like, "you're getting less access to the game" without smartglass.

Maybe they can include special music for Zune owners too.

I'm still crazy about this game, and I could care less about Smartglass. Love how the protagonist looks just like Shane from The Walking Dead.

And so begins the attempt to shoehorn "features" into games to get people to buy another product.

One more reason not to get a Xbone.

Glad I only have to have smartglass for every game on X1. On ps4 you'll have to download uplay app for watchdogs, battlelog app for battlefield 4 commander mode and any other games that have features like this unless its a first party game. On X1 you only need smartglass app and you sign in with your xbox live account won't have to make a bunch of different accounts.

Really trying to shoehorn as many useless things as possible in eh Microsoft?

So if Microsoft can really make the "second screen" gameplay work. That would be something. Dead rising 3 and using the surface tablet. Thus far the second screen game concept is unproven as to make for really engaging gameplay. Can Microsft do it with this game?

Ha, my roommate was mentioning and I agree with him that Sony needs to do something like that with Vita. Where if you have a game on PS3/PS4 and you have the mobile version for Vita, you can do seperate missions that help you advance in the playstation game and vice versa (basically having both games unlocks missions/advantages you wouldn't get if you just had one).

It's honestly a pretty cool idea. I like how MS is implementing it between the game and the phone. It's not really quite the same thing but it's pretty cool and if I was getting a One (maybe far in the future when it's a lot cheaper, for now I'll go with the PS4), and wanted that game on it, I totally would install the smartglass app to take advantage.

the real reason people are upset is this game is on XBOX ONE.  if this was PS4 game and used PS VITA, there would be no complaints.   Wii U has their tablet and PS4 has VITA but that is OK!! rrrrriiggghhhttt!!!!  SMARTGLASS IS A FFFFRRREEEEEEEEE APP and we are about to go to war.

Didn't CAPCOM say you don't have to use SMARTGLASS.

so much anger over a game that they do not want.  Why not move along to a game you want?  LOL!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't care about smart glass, but DR3 is a system seller.

Christ...why is it because Nintendo comes out with some dumb ass gimmick, Microsoft feels the need to rip them off, shoe horn said gimmick into games and screw them up?

Wii motion controls = Kinect = shit games

Wii U tablet controller = Games using Smatglass = games with shit gameplay components

Thats great because putting my controller down to insert commands on my phone is so much fun...not.

@GothicWar Isn't deep down a PS4 exclusive developed by capcom?

DR3 is developed by Capcom vancouver, a subsidiary of the major Capcom company. this game is exclusive solely because microsoft is publishing it. (which apparently is the only reason the game even exists because capcom didn't want to publish it themselves).

@GothicWar lol you think they did this by choice wake up kid. ms is paying them for this game like they did for the last one. it will never be on anything else unless there is a sequel and ms doesnt buy the rights which is what they did with gears.

@codeman101360  120 million ds, dsi, dsi xl, and 3ds users plus the 7 wii u users (JK). just because its not for you dont pretend there is no market for it ds & 3ds sales dont lie.

@LesserAngel smartglass is free on all devices if you have a smart phone or tablet you can get it. so there is no buying

@Tripwolf So your not going to use second srceen function on your ps4 for any games like watchdogs or battlefield 4 and other games. Get the f outa of here. lol

LonelyHippie27
LonelyHippie27

@onlinekill They clearly said you DON'T have to have it, it just adds extra bull crap. I imagine that's how it's going to work for every game. As dumb as they are, Microsoft knows that most people won't want any part of that shit

CFritzRun

@jungleboy16 I think the problem most people have is loss of immersion.  You can't get pulled any farther from the game than having to put down your controller to pick up your phone and have a fictional phone call with a video game character.

@tigress666 lol too late.... you can do that now with the vita and the ps3 plus they announced this we be used even more on the ps4.

Exactly. Smartglass is a great companion app and it is FREE. It has been up and running for the 360 and it works great. People who rip this would be more than happy to embrace it on the wii u or vita or if it made use of that touch pad on the ps4 controller. It all adds to the engagement of the game and it is optional so if u don't like it don't use it. God forbid developers from trying something new.

tigress666
tigress666

@GAKSITAL No, there would be, it would just be the equivelant xbox fans complaining :). And to be fair some people who really did think it was a stupid idea.

I, for one, am getting a PS4 and maybe will get a One in the future but even though I can't take advantage as I won't have a One I think it's a neat idea and me and my roommate have been saying Sony needs to do something like that with the Vita and the PS3/PS4 (especially since I'd like to see the Vita succeed and Sony seems to already have given up on it *sigh*).

@LittleSaintGoph @MasterOfSprites Dead Rising:  Here's an unlimited and amazingly creative number of ways to murder this endless horde of zombies.  You have 5 minutes, GO!

Lame. I pass every time a new one is announced.  The only thing that made it unique was the creativity and hilarity behind killing the zombies.  Not time limits.  There's nothing unique about limited time.

deathblow3

@CFritzRun @jungleboy16 i dont know fritz i think it is more immersion if anything. and i have noticed i have started getting bored of the same old same old in games. @ jungle i agree we gamers tend to hate anything new its the younger crowd though, we older gamers are used to change from paddles to 1 button controllers  to touch screen. games have always evolved and will continue.

@spectreSE7EN

"People who rip this would be more than happy to embrace it on the wii u or vita or if it made use of that touch pad on the ps4 controller.  "

Yeah...no. I think it's a stupid distraction on the Wii U, which is why I don't want one. I think it's a dumb distraction when using the Vita with the PS4, and won't be using it. And, I think the same for the Xbox One and Smartglass with this game, so no, it's not a "I'm MS Hating" thing.

Oh, and while the using of Smartglass is optional, it's the lame kind of optional. If it was the good kind of optional, one could play the entire game without Smartglass...as it stands, there are parts of the game rendered inaccessible to those opting not to use it. Kind of like the games that lamely prevent you from playing sections of the game without co-op, like Dead Space 3.

@LittleSaintGoph @CFritzRun @MasterOfSprites I'm another one that didn't like the time limits. Last month I downloaded DR2 because of the games with gold promo. I lost the game because I was having fun and not paying attention to the arrows, god forbid. The game said I could re-start the game(NFW) or just wander for three days. If the time limit was still mandatory on DR3, I wouldn't be getting it. I want to mow zombies without feeling rushed.

deathblow3
deathblow3

@CFritzRun @LittleSaintGoph @MasterOfSprites @cfritz there was no zombie killing time limit. it was only for rescues. honestly i wasnt bothered by the limits as the most of the time quite long i just did more than one mission at once it made you manage you time better. if did it right you were left with nothing to do but kill zombies for fun or in the case of #2 gamble.

spectreSE7EN
spectreSE7EN

The game isn't even out to make a fair judgment as to how "lame or "distracting" it really is. No one is forcing devs to use tablet features so if the dev thinks it enhances the game and enriches the experience then we will see when the game is released how successful it is.
