Source: An anonymous source told Eurogamer that Capcom has tapped Vancouver-based Blue Castle to produce a sequel to the 2006 hit Xbox 360 game Dead Rising.

The official story: Representatives of Capcom and Blue Castle did not return GameSpot's requests for comment.

What we heard: Murmurs of a Dead Rising sequel have been around since about the time of the original game's release. And given its critical and commercial success, it would be a bigger surprise if sequel wasn't in Capcom's plans.

While the game is a no-brainer, the choice of studio would certainly be unusual. Founded in 2005 by a handful of Electronic Arts and Disney Interactive veterans, Blue Castle has to date specialized in baseball games for 2K Sports, including last year's arcade-style The BIGS and the upcoming stat sim MLB Front Office Manager.

The BIGS was generally well received, but it would seem to be a risky choice entrusting Dead Rising's distinct marriage of violent gameplay and satirical narrative to a fledgling studio that has shipped only a single sports game. To give a promising franchise like Dead Rising to Blue Castle would show an almost irrational amount of faith in the studio on the part of Capcom.

Then again, Dead Rising was always intended to appeal to Western audiences. A Western studio might have a better idea of what Western gamers want out of a sequel. And when it came time for a new entry in another of the Japanese publisher's foreign-focused franchises--Bionic Commando--Capcom sought out the help of Swedish outfit GRIN. At the time, GRIN's only claims to fame were PC ports of the Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter series, but the upcoming Bionic Commando seems to be in good hands.

The unique structure of Dead Rising--players are trapped in a zombie-infested mall with three days to uncover the conspiracy behind the events--doesn't lend itself to a "more of the same" sequel. As a result, whoever handles the follow-up will have to come into the series with fresh eyes and a few tweaks to the blueprint. Maybe Blue Castle is just the team to provide that.

Bogus or not bogus?: Tentatively not bogus.

Hope u can just go around and kill zombies now!! without any time limit or anything

What if... In the sequel, same town, but outside of the mall, you know, someone who lived there or got trapped by miltary... Makes a little bit of sense, but would probably suck as a story :( DON'T DO THAT PLEASE! I know they can't see me...

Well... Who bet's they will have base ball bats again?

I hope it isn't going to be in small enclosed space, a city would be really cool, though... Where to lock up dumb survivors? In the Nuclear Factory! *Locks them in* Wait a minute... OH NO!

with the co-op make it online and splitscreen

Never completely finished Dead Rising but look forward to a greater sequel. It was fun but a bit too difficult for me. Couldn't stand that you had to be here and there at a certain time and felt like I had to rush through the game. In sequel PLEASE drop the timer, drop the escorting survivors thing (I HATED that), amp up and focus on the action and story. Balance out the action and story perfectly. Everyone else stated add co-op, yes that too. Push the envelope on the gore! As much as I liked the blood and gore in the first, I wanted to see more grisly looking deaths of the survivors. Sadly, when a survivor would die it seemed a little toned down for me. Turn the volume up on that. When you decapitate a zombie I want to see the limbs stay on the ground. When it gets really bloody I want to see the blood pile up a lot in a zombie crowd. When we meet survivors have them actually HELP me out better instead of trying to yell at them to "Follow me!" so much. They can't put up a fight well so it's why I couldn't stand escorting survivors to safe room. Instead make it so they can hold their own and join me in the fight. When I find more let me choose who I can have come with me when we get to a safe room (if you include that where survivors can stay). When you level up, make it so we can add stats like strength, defense and speed- a point system. Okay that's all I'm done. Blue Castle: PLEASE IMPRESS THE HELL OUT OF ME! This game could make or break your future being that you're a one trick pony with just a baseball game on your resume.

i just bought the first game and yea its fun all u need to add is co op, a better save system, and probly a bigger world like a whole city and id buy it (id probly buy it anyway)

Problem is, co-op doesnt fit in with the first dead rising (there is only one hero) unless there is two frank west's or you are brad or something, but brad just sits on his ass shooting carlito all day so doesnt really make a story. But multiplayer deathmatch would be nice in the mall lol. Storyline would probably have to be something like Santa Cabeza, and shows you how it all started (but then the friggin spec.ops will come and start putting holes in you again), and you arent confined to a small area like in the first one. Yes the mall was rather big but not as big as a whole city. Sandbox mode in dead rising was okay, but I still would have prefered to go around the city scavenging for items rather than be confined in a mall when I could easily open the door and run out :/

nerdboyxxx
nerdboyxxx

man I hope I can actually explore a whole city this time. The mall is big, but...one you play it ten times over unlock all the achievments and see the zombies die in every way possible...it gets a bit repetitive. I spend ages looking out those doors hoping that they'll let me out in a sequel :/ PLEASE CAPCOM PLEEEEEEASE! DONT GIVE IT TO BLUE CASTLE! MAKE A PROPER SEQUEL!!!!!

Syphofighter
Syphofighter

And multiplayer wouldn't be good for dead rising the gameplay is a bit slow for all out multiplayer...and i think they shouldn't allow us out of the mall as being trapped in a mall that is infested with zombiez making it harder and more scary to survive..i hated going out into the mall at night the zombies looked so creepy and when those convicts came! my god was i scared then

Syphofighter

I have a bad feeling about this they design sports games and they might be making dead rising..i just think it will be crap

ACTUALLY JUST MAKE SURE THERE IS MULTIPLAYER AND MAKE SURE THE WORLD ISN'T RESTRICTED LIKE THE MALL WAS.

If it's anything like Dead Rising it will be good. MAKE IT SO YOU CAN GRIND ON THE SKATEBOARD!!! You can only ollie on the skateboard in the first one, you have to be able to GRIND in the sequel!!! Idea Posted by Fernando Hurtado Jr Friday 1.9.09

If the first Dead Rising had co-op, I'd never get off of it. Dead Rising is a really superb game and I hope that they can do the same with Dead Rising 2, just add co-op.

Arrogentzombie
Arrogentzombie

i think they should give you a giant sand box city and watch as it goes from sanity to calamity. it should not just restricted to a mall and indeed a co-op mode would be kick ass. theres only one thing better then killing zombies thats killing em with friends

Tomb_is_great

It seems to me the only thing wanted from western gamers is co-op, I bet if they made the same game and just added that every one would buy it.

Dead Rising was so repetitive, i hope the 2nd one is better and there were there was no save point before the boss battle. Hope there is a save point before the boss battle in the 2nd version

Dead Rising was way better, and more rewarding then Left 4 Dead, I own and enjoy both games, but at least there was a story and an objective other then getting to the next safehouse. L4D is fun to play with friends, but it is just an HL2 mod arcade game.

" snake3rules Posted Nov 10, 2008 11:49 pm GMT jonny tanna-- I heard the rumor about vegas was disproved after some picture that was the source turned out to be fake.. Is that not true? Whatever the case, whoever their source is tapped blue castle at the latest in july (based on the articles date)-- so if the info is true, it is quite possible that... A) Vegas could be the setting, and... B) By now, they could've been developing the game in secret for months. -- Either way, Capcom should treat this franchise with more respect if they want any chance of keeping it around for the long term (which it definitely has the potential to do)... Resident Evil 5, another Capcom sequel based on zombies, had an annoucement and a first screenshot like two years ago.... And they havent even officially announced anything for Dead Rising 2 in the (multiple) YEARS since the original game's release... -- And what bothers me most is that its not like they gain ANY advantage by keeping mum-- its not like apple keeping their designs quiet so others wont copy them... zombies are well known and heavily exploited by modern, popular culture-- So they gain nothing by waiting, and especially in the video game world, where the turn-around from concept to game on shelf is like 3+ years, and the systematic doling out of information on a continuous, incremental basis is the past time of all those who've succeeded with sequels and franchises... ... And all of this is not to mention the simple fact that advising and informing eager consumers, stock holders, and fans about their products on the horizon should be an incredibly obvious priority (especially in the worlds current economic climate, where some glimmer on the horizon would be good for any and all business) .... Either way, I hope we hear something soon, many people have been speculating for years, and its time to put it to rest. And GAMIST-- Theres more than just that-- Co op is a must ( and Id guess the purposely missing words in the article jonny tanna posted a link to) but there were a lot of problems including the save and time system, otis call interuptions, dumb survivors, EXTREMELY clunky controls, and whole host of other problems... but they've been well-covered in the game's forums, and most are quite apparent and easily mendable, so like many other sequels Id assume its basically a no-brainer that this game will be great followup that surpasses, if not eclipses the original... And finally, DARKDROID-- Im pretty sure you meant George Romero, as hes the one who sued last I heard... and mostly sure since Robert Rodriguez was 9 when Dawn of the Dead was originally released, and since hes had nothing to do with it, or any of the other sequels and remakes." When it comes to George A Romero sueing because of Dead RIsing, It wasn't him that sued, It was one of the producers that sued...and lost. =-)

I thought the saving system was fine because it makes the players think on their saving decisions. As for coop, they should do something like 4 or 8 player coop but the 8 players start at different location and find their way to each others location/rendezvous point through communication on a big map. In other words, the players themselves are the survivors, etc.

my theory on the quietness surrounding this game. for dead rising fans it seems, more buzz is being created by them holding back the game i think. while it would be awesome to have more info, these little snippets were getting are just making me more excited. if all the info came out I'd be excited, but the suspense is making me want it more! and contrary to what people are saying, i don't think many changes need to be made. the save system was good, as it ACTUALLY made the game challenging. co-op would be awesome, but too easy i think. Vegas would be awesome, but a theme park would make a far better setting, and multi platform would be good, so those ps3 owners out there actually get to experience some good games. There's only a certain amount of time (or is there....) that they can play MGS4.

it cannot be in a mall because Rob Rodriguez sued Capcom for stealing his idea of zombies in a mall. They will have to do another location
