Dead or Alive creator's action game Devil's Third 80 percent done, launching in 2014

But who will publish it?

by

Devil's Third, the all-new action game from Dead or Alive creator Tomonobu Itagaki and Valhalla Game Studios, is 80 percent finished and on track to launch in 2014.

"Next year will be the year we'll be releasing the console game, Devil's Third," Itagaki told 4Gamers (as translated by Siliconera). "At the moment, it is about 80 percent complete, and we can about see the end of it. However, there's still a little more polishing that needs to be done. That's also one of the reasons I've decided to work independently."

"For you fans out there, I'd like to apologize for making you worry," he added. "We'll be going all out next year, so please look forward to it."

Devil's Third was at one time planned for release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, though that was when the now-bankrupt THQ was signed on to publish the game. It is unclear if the game remains planned for those platforms, or if it has shifted to Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Itagaki previously said that he had met with various companies to discuss a publishing deal for Devil's Third, though it remains unclear which outfit has signed on. Valhalla Game Studios has major plans for the game, as it expects to expand the Devil's Third property into other forms of media, including manga, novels, animation, and film, in an effort to spin the fiction into a "blockbuster franchise."

When you ask someone how much work you have done, the answer is always 80%, coz 80% is a safe zone, not too close, not too far behind

I'm looking forward to seeing what Itagaki and Valhalla Game Studios does with his newest project.  I have to admit that I hated Tecmo Koei's last two Team Ninja games --- Dead or Alive 5 wasn't as enjoyable as Dead or Alive 4 or any of the previous games in that series and the last Ninja Gaiden totally sucked. I'd love to see him and his guys show Tecmo/Team Ninja up. I hope his new game shines. Keeping my fingers crossed.

80% complete and it still hasn't been released? fail! EA would of had that one out at 65.

ITagaki needs to make a fighting game, call it Alive or Dead, and have characters with just slightly different names and Cosumes. Sakumi VS Anaye ftw!

Itagaki is a has-been

He really needs to release a Dead or Alive game of some sort (including Beach Volleyball) to the PC. It's much easier to mod on PC and we'll all get to enjoy Kasumi and the other girls the way they're meant to be enjoyed. =P

THANK YOU!

Been waiting on news o thi for quite some time. Although controversial Itagaki knows his guns and I wouldn't expect him to fall out of game developement after publisher bankrupts and gives back the assets.

\m/ 2014 here we come ;]

Ninja Gaiden Black is the best action game ever made, better even than DMC1. Can't wait for this.

It's clear that he was behind the successful series for Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive. I am looking forward to seeing what he has in store.

i don't expect this game to be more than a minor distraction for those looking for a quirky 5 hour long action game. it looks something along the lines of a suda 51 game but with a bit more polish. i see hints of anarchy reigns and metal gear rising in there as well. i doubt it will be as good as any of those titles, but it remains to be seen i guess.

I was honestly thinking this game was vaporware when I remembered it a few weeks ago. Between this and Kingdom Under Fire II, it seems a number of games I thought were dead have been progressing under the radar (though I'm unclear if the later is still coming to PS3).

Speaking of vaporware, what ever happened to Ni-Oh (which I believe was revealed at the same time as Heavenly Sword)?

@XAF1 NG3 RE was actually pretty good but ok whatever.

@bunchanumbersDoubtful. If anything it will be like most third party games and not come to Nintendo at all. Itagaki hasn't care about Nintendo in a while. Be happy we're getting Bayonetta.

@CieraFinally someone that agrees with me. The guy hasn't made anything good since NG1 and DOA. ( in my opinion I hated NG2)

@stage4saiyan I don't think there was every any dispute that NG is the best hack and slash ever made. DMC, God of War, Lollipop, Ryse, Bayonetta, Dante's Inferno, PoP, don't have shit on Ryu.

@ciphfer Sure enough NG3 was terrible without him, so I believe he knows what he is doing when it comes to fun action games.

@Xristophoros Except it isn't a Suda51 game, Itagaki's prior work creating the Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden series shows that he ISN'T prone to making short games and, given the drop in quality in NG and DoA after he left Tecmo, it's evident that he was the brains behind those games.

In short, you're making assumptions that this game will be a "quirky 5 hour long action game" because you compare it not to Itagaki's other works, but to works from developers known for short games. That's incredibly silly.

@Grenadeh

The game was still mediocre.  Hardly worthy of the name. It was basically just add content to try to cover up the flaws of Ninja Gaiden  3. The team lacked creativity and the game seemed one dimensional.

@ExplicitMike @bunchanumbers There's already rumors of a new exclusive 3rd party Nintendo game. I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo is the one that publishes it. Either that or maybe Shenmue 3.

@ExplicitMike @Ciera Most people hated NG2 on account of rockets. 2 and 3 Razor's Edge are just as good as the first 3D gaiden game, but they get no love.

Xristophoros

@Doomerang First off, Itagaki will have a fraction of the budget to work with in comparison to his past work at Tecmo. He established a small, independent studio and has to be careful with how he chooses to use his resources. Secondly, based on nearly ALL of the action games to come out of Japan this past generation, what makes you think Devil's Third will be any different? Short, unpolished, gimmicky and badly written; these are the terms best used to describe the majority of action games coming out of Japan for a while now. Aside from Metal Gear Rising and Bayonetta, what other great games come to mind in the genre? This is not a problem specifically with Itagaki, it is a problem the Japanese gaming industry is facing as a whole.

@VenkmanPHD @ZombieGuyGeorge I wasn't aware there was any need to take fighting games seriously.

@Xristophoros Platinum games didn't sit on their asses for this long either. People give this guy too much credit. I love for Itagaki team to prove me wrong.  To me he lost a lot of credibility with NG2 and DOA Beach Volleyball 1 & 2.
