Dead or Alive could get crossover fighter

Team Ninja head says the studio would be interested in dropping the gloves with a fellow fighting franchise, singles out Virtua Fighter as most respected rival series.

Dead or Alive and Virtua Fighter could be the next fighting game franchises on a crossover collision course.

Dead or Alive is spoiling for a fight.

Speaking with Edge, Team Ninja head Yosuke Hayashi said the Dead or Alive 5 developer would be interested in pursuing crossover opportunities along the lines of next month's Street Fighter X Tekken, and then expressed his particular admiration for Sega's Virtua Fighter franchise.

"In terms of collaboration titles, there are staff on our team who just love fighting games and if there was any chance to do that we'd actively, possibly do that," Hayashi said, adding, "The first 3D game I played was Virtua Fighter, that's the IP I respect most. Virtua Fighter was the father of 3D gaming, so it's very well respected."

Hayashi also discussed a change in how Team Ninja treats its female characters. Once known as much for scant garb and outsized anatomy as fighting fundamentals, the new Dead or Alive will apparently take a more respectful approach to women.

"Up to now we thought, with other games, let's show the beauty of a woman," Hayashi told the site. "How do we do that? Make her breasts big and just make them jiggle, that was the concept."

Dead or Alive 5 is set for release later this year. A demo of the fighting game is being offered as a preorder bonus for Team Ninja's other new title, Ninja Gaiden III, which is set for release March 20.

Just to let you know Tekken X Street Fighter is still in develpment and slated for a 2013 release, it has been since day one if i do recall.

@jtthegame316 Are you being sarcastic? You refered to street fighter as requiring skill, (a clear candidate for button mashing) and state that DOA is a masher because it has a 3 button setup? 1.) DOA is a 4 button setup (Punch, Kick, Throw, Counter) 2.) Just because SF has more buttons doesn't make it better. Rollerblades have 6 wheels each, but that doesn't make them faster than my car. SF is a shallow button masher because it requires no skill to do anything. Even the special moves are simple, my kid-brother can pull them off and he isn't right in the head. DOA on the other hand is deep because you have to know where and how each and every single move lands. It requires timing, precision, prediction, and most importantly (because this is a FIGHTING game) training. NOW, all of that being said, I agree that the mix-up of SF vs Tekken just doens't make sense. Yanking the tekken roster out of a 3d, punch/kick juggle system and into a 2d fireball throwing special move button mash @&$#-fest... it just... doesn't make sense. and I know I am ranting but what ever happened to the other side of this coin? I am talking about Tekken X Street Fighter. When these games were announced it was done as 2 games. One in 3d, the other 2d. My guess is that SF's inability to move into the complex 3d realm of fighting games once again has been shown to it's developers.

DOA 4 is the single deepest fighting game ever created. Every other developer should take a SERIOUS look at how they did that game. The sheer depth and NECESSITY of taking your time to master the moves in that game is why I STILL love it. Now... I never played the Virtua Fighter games... And that is saying a lot because I am a fighting game addict. (It's my fault for not getting that 32x when I had the chance) Anyway, if the creators of the best fighting game ever made say that it could hold up... I am tempted to go by a copy of the latest game. What are they on now? 6? 7? Edit: I really let this series fly under the radar. I didn't realize it was Sega. I should have... but I didn't. ...Sega does what nintenDONT! BAM!

Well at least doa vs vf makes sense as it is the same style of beat em up. street fighter x tekken makes no sense because they are different styles of beat em up for a start street fighter do fire balls where as tekken is all punches kicks and throws. as well street fighter actually requires skill where as tekken is a mashers game but then if vf vs doa happens vf is a skill game where as doa gets a bit button mashy. but then both doa and vf use a 3 button system so they could balance that out well.so if tecmo and sega am 2 got together am 2 do a one version to play like vf and temco do one to play like doa then it could work out really well personally if it happened i would want the version that plays like vf

Crossover with SNK? Why not??? Something out of left field that nobody would expect?

IMO a Fighting Vipers 'reboot' would be a better fit with DOA in a crossover title - they both share a similar gameplay style. Anyway VF is to revered a series to submit to cross-over - and it still extremely popular in Japan.

Instead of adding VF characters for crossover.... Why DOA series never adding the characters with the facial effects (all faces need dull looking? stay cool?) I think the characters will look much better if sometimes they could give a simple happy face with a smile and presented more lively.....

I could see tekken vs dead or alive but since tekken is taken I guess they gotta go virtua fighter. Didn't play VF that much but I know alot about the DOA series, would be cool too see them get back into the fight!!!

Well I can see why they would want to do a cross over with Virtua Fighter as Dead or Alive 1 was made using a modified version of the Virtua Fighter engine. However I think DOA Vs Tekken would be more epic. think about it Hayabusa Vs Raven, Raido Vs Heihachi, Kasumi Vs Asuka. That would be awesome! @RageSet that would be fighters Megamix with characters from Fighting Vipers and Virtua Fighter, Alone with some Characters taken form Virtua Cop 2, Sonic the Fighters and Even Daytona USA

Here's a Pop Quiz for you fighting game fans out there. If this crossover were made, this wouldn't be Virtua Fighter's first...what was the name of the crossover game Virtua Fighter was included? Bonus points...what was the name of the other series included in that crossover game?! If you are a fan of Virtua Fighter or even 3D fighting games in general, you wouldn't need Google to answer. :D

Yulaw2000 how is Tekken a button masher? iv never had to mash to play it i think your talking about ppl with out skill. who button mash on any fighter thay play? so far the only button masher i know of is a dbz game

It's simple: DOA and Soul Calibur, they just mix so well!

Full circle... the first DOA ran on Sega's model 2 board. When I think about it, it's kinda weird nobody thought of this crossover before. Although the fighting systems are distinct, it would probably be pretty easy to meld the two and still keep the personality of each game's characters intact. Plus, my little Eileen likes to beat up on ninjas.

Virtua Fighter vs. Dead or Alive? Do want though I still want a Tekken vs. Virtua Fighter or Tekken vs. Dead or Alive as well. As much as I want to see Kage-maru vs. Hayabusa, I too would also like to see a Yoshimitsu vs. Kage-maru as well or Yoshimitsu vs. Hayabusa at that.

meh, virtual fighter hasn't been good in a long time and dead or alive has become pretty much a joke (volleyball any one?). makes sense they would cross with each other...and still suck

NTM23

Huh. Yeah, I guess I can see that. Imagined it before, but I've always felt Virtua Fighter and Tekken were similar to one another more so than DOA to the other two.

DOA + VF? Hmm... Don't fret they could pull it off and it would be fine. If I had to guess it would probably turn out to be a lot like Sega's other arcade fighter franchise 'Fighting Vipers' but this is just speculative stuff at this point right?

I thought Tekken was the closest fighting game to DOA.

Why not? That's the trend nowadays. How about a DOA vs Clay Fighters?

VF fighters are pretty generic I would rather VF look more like DOA.

I'm curious. If they really made this cross over, which one do you prefer? 1. Make VF female character proportion over the top with the jiggly; or 2. Make DOA female character proportion more believable. Thumbs up if you choose 1, thumbs down if you choose 2. Please don't give this comment a thumbs up/down because you like/dislike this comment.

Countering is pretty big in DOA most fighters are not like that. Nothing more technical bout VF.

RageSet
RageSet

I love Virtua Fighter and I wouldn't mind having DOA fighters in a game, but I do not want Team Ninja to develop such a crossover. Virtua Fighter takes massive amounts of time and skill to master and while I'm not saying DOA isn't a technical fighter, VF is a harder game to learn. If Team Ninja allowed Sega AM2 to develop their own version of this crossover while Team Ninja does theirs (e.g. the same with the current Street Fighter X Tekken), I'll be a happy camper.

Zerabp
Zerabp

DoA crossover would be a bad idea it's gameplay is just to fast for other fighters to compare. I used to love the fighting genre in general but ever since DoA 2 I've not been able to go back to other series in the 3d fighter genre. Soul Caliber looked like it could compete until four when they ditched what made it good to take it online. Needless to say all other fighters just seem slow and clunky to me now.

i dont mind more fighting games especially cross overs, but when they throw exclusive characters for certain consoles then that is really lame which i hope wont happen if they do make one

I like DOA alot and I think VF is ok so a crossover wouldn't be to bad although I think that DOA characters are alot faster then VF characters and there have more devastating unrealistic moves so it would be interesting to see how they would balance it.

I've never played Virtua Fighter before, but as a DOA fan, I can't complain as long as they're still churning out instalments, crossover or not. Though to be honest, I've always wanted to see Ryu Hayabusa in Soulcalibur :) As long as it remains accessible to fighting game novices like me, as DOA has. It's really difficult for non-competitive gamers to get into the newest generation of fighters, with a severe lack of entry-level game modes.

Expect Dead or Alive vs Street Fighter for....I'll say 2014 or 2015. Oh sure, they say Virtua Fighter but what are the chances of THAT? Capcom will be more interested since they clearly get off on Crossovers.

Funnily enough neither fanbase seems so thrilled about this crossover...one side finding the other hypersexualized, and the others not like Virtua Fighter's mechanics. Whether it turn out good or bad, it would be interesting to see what they could come up with~
