Dead Island sequel hitting consoles and PC

E3 2012: Deep Silver bringing Techland-developed Dead Island Riptide to consoles and PC; more information on project expected this summer.

by

The Dead Island zombie uprising hasn't been quelled yet. Publisher Deep Silver today announced Dead Island Riptide. The project is currently in development at Techland and is slated to arrive on consoles and PC.

Dead Island Riptide is on the way.

The company gave no further details on Dead Island Riptide, but Deep Silver said it is planning an "extensive reveal" of the project for sometime this summer. Last month, Deep Silver denied a report suggesting Spec Ops: The Line developer Yager was at work on a Dead Island sequel.

The original Dead Island was developed by Techland and shipped in September 2011 to generally positive review scores. The game shipped 3 million copies and welcomed various add-on packs. Speculation about a follow-up sparked in November, when Techland filed a trademark application for Dead World.

This better not be DLC if it's a full game thats great.

Dead Island 1 was pretty damn amazing, I just hated the chapter near the shitty church, but the Island parts were so great..

If they sharpen the graphics, improve the shooting mechanics and  polish it enough, this could be awesome. Hopefully it will have good easter eggs like the last one did. Did anyone else find Jason and his chainsaw? I would also like some better side quests. Either way, I think they're taking the zombie genre in the right direction.

Finally, perhaps I can get an answer of that charming Sam B fellow's brilliant inquiry as to "who does my voodoo, 'female dog'?"

If they take the proof of concept that was Dead Island, combine it with some of what people were expecting to get from that backwards trailer, and take the time to make a finished polished game then they might could have a decent sequel.

Wait the 1st one had an uprising? I thought it was a wimper. The amount of bugs and glitches were appalling and the Story was god awful.

i just loved the first one, i hope this is a full game, as i want a new dead island, or if this is a sequel they better make it a full game

i hope this is a full sequal and not a mere "expansion pack" as the title suggests.  i would expect dead island 2, not dead island riptide...

I didn't enjoy this game because of the excessive cursing.  The game mechanics weren't that refined either as driving wasn't good and it was very repetitive.  It was full of fetch quests that really didn't make it feel like you were accomplishing anything.  The story broke any immersion you had in the story with humorous cutscenese (humorous in a bad way) in that if you were playing by yourself suddenly all the characters were there with you.  I understand the need to develop games quickly from a financial standpoint but that's just bad, and people are holding the game up as if it's fabulous.

Quick travel, less repetition and better VA's... Title looks rather tacky to me.

I thought they were investing in a movie? Oh well....only angst is the quests are a chore like in skyrim...T__T

Here's hoping this one has more content, longevity and less repetition.

Dead Island SUCKED. Wasn't worth the wait at all.

And I have the PC version and I don't have the game crash when playing co-op.

I personally hated the game, glad I got the game cheap.

I'm glad there's a sequel. I loved this game since I saw the first trailer. That's why I bought it on steam recently. The bad thing is whenever I play co-op the game crashes. I read it in lots of forums and a lot of people is getting the same problem. I even wrote a letter to Deep Silver, and they said that they're still working on the problem. But since September 2011? I hope someone take the time to read this and if he/she knows how to fix this, please write me a private message. I'll be forever in thanks.

.....hope, just take it all.

Yay. A few minor fixes and the original could have been truly great. Hopefully they've figured that out for the sequel.

Here's hoping that this time around they ship a properly finished, appropriately polished product instead of a horribly buggy mess that randomly deletes your saved game.

Did they ever even finish patching all the issues with the PS3 version?  If not, they should probably do that before working on a sequel.

i will buy. I feel so much disdain for the first with the poor lvl of polish. Felt like a beta build and still crashes (mainly while driving) to this day...

but im just to much of a sucker for a good zombie survival horror and the beating of zombies keeps me playing it.

I'm surpried that that there will be a sequel. Played the first game liked it. But the studio didn't feel that it  sold enough. glad that a second installment is on its way.

This is great news.  The first game was very fun and the potential for a bigger and better, and more polished, sequel is huge.

Didn't they just say not too long ago that there would be no Dead Island sequel?

@Megavideogamer I've seen the game ranked #1 on Steam for MONTHS, and it has been on top 10 'till Skyrim came out. Dunno about console sales, but it definitely sold lots of digital copies on PC.

ManeFlame

@Ice-Cube Semantics. They said they "are not working on Dead Island 2." As you can see, they aren't working on "Dead Island 2", they are working on "Dead Island Riptide."

@s4dn3s5 It definitely sold well on consoles. The game was completely sold out in my area for a solid month.

@s4dn3s5 I HAD to buy it for pc, every copy in EB games around my house was sold out for both ps3 and 360

Ice-Cube

@ManeFlame Everyone else above me thinks it's a sequel, but they did make it sound like Dead Island was dead and to never be touched again. Though I do see your point, just seems kinda funny.

ManeFlame
ManeFlame

@Ice-Cube I never said I didn't think it wasn't a sequel. I'm just saying that the act of not calling it "Dead Island 2" makes their "we're not making Dead Island 2" statement completely true while still skirting around the idea that they still are making a sequel. Gotta be careful the way companies and politicians phrase things. They love to hide statements in their statements.
