DC Comics MOBA Infinite Crisis announced

Free-to-play DC MOBA coming to PC later in 2013.

by

The Lord of the Rings Online developer Turbine has announced Infinite Crisis, a free-to-play MOBA set in the DC Comics universe.

The game is scheduled to be released for the PC later this year, and a beta will be available.

Infinite Crisis is set across the 52 universes of the DC multiverse and promises map-altering events across various DC locations. So far Turbine has promised steampunk and postapocalyptic-themed stages. Map-specific interactive elements, such as throwing cars or calling down meteor showers, are also mentioned.

The roster announced so far includes familiar DC characters alongside some alternative takes on iconic heroes. Twelve characters have been shown: Nightmare Batman, Doomsday, Flash, Gaslight Batman, Gaslight Catwoman, Gaslight Joker, Green Lantern, Poison Ivy, Shazam (aka Captain Marvel), The Joker, Wonder Woman, and Zatanna.

Each character in Infinite Crisis comes with one passive skill and four active abilities, one of which appears to be an ultimate.

The class types on show in Infinite Crisis at the moment fit into traditional MOBA archetypes: assassin, bruiser, marksman, blaster, support, and enforcer.

Turbine also says that Infinite Crisis will contain an unfolding storyline developed in partnership with DC Entertainment.

1. Buy Superman using in-app purchases

2. Win Game because SUPERMAN IS OP.

2 things:

1: DC seem to hate/ignore the New 52 outside of the comics. All games, animations and other media are all based on Pre-Flashpoint DC. I understand New 52 is still fairly young (18 months in), but I still want to see more of it explored in other media.

2: DC seem to be Batman fanboys, which is understandable since DC stands for "Detective Comics" - the original Batman comic and equivalent to Action Comics. But they also seem to hate Superman: 2 versions of Batman, with 3 of his supporting cast (one of which appears twice). And the Only Superman related character is the one who actually killed him.

Someone is bound to argue the point that Superman is "obvious" and doesn't need announccing, well, I say the same for Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and a Green Lantern (Hal Jordan).

MOBAs or "DotA-likes" are becoming the equivalent of FPS in consoles.

I hope it will be more like LOL and less like DOTA2

How many of these games do we need? There's LoL, DOTA, LotR, Marvel, now DC and there was some other too, don't remember the name.

Lets hope that Turbine gets the artwork behind Batman and Wonder Woman down.  NetherRealm Studios has never done those characters any favors in the character concept department, especially Wonder Woman.

Interesting personally would rather play a marvel version not a huge fan of the DC universe but its F2P always worth a look

@jcopp72 It is a genre of games. "Multiplayer Online Battle Arena". Games like League of Legends and Dota

@balintcsikos If you have WC3 - The frozen throne, there's a very good custom map with skins and skills and all that. It's called "Naruto Wars Unlimited".

@Techn1c4l :) yes I'm waiting for when nintendo, sega and capcom make their own mobas with their IP game characters. Okay I'm not really waiting :)

@Scorpion1813 Batman is DC's most beloved and popular character, and has earned them the most fame and money. Even more than Superman. Also, Batman is actually interesting, unlike Superman.

@Winchester01 You mean having to grind for champions and runes so it is unbalanced from the start?

@ZetA_LatA Theres around 15 mobas, most of them irrelevent or not as big as LoL or Dota 2, how are they everywhere?

@Stebsis

But that's like asking 'how many RTS games do we need?' or 'how many RPG's do we need?'

The games you listed all form a new genre, and it's great to have choice within that genre.

@horizonwriter You do realize that Warner Brothers purchased Turbine a couple years ago and Warner Brothers owns NetherRealm Studios as well.

@SirNormanislost There's gonna be soon out Marvel Heroes a diablo hack slash type game where everyone is connected in instances but "dungeons" are solo or party based.

@jorge69696 @Winchester01 This is such an irrelevant complaint. It has almost no bearing on the game itself and rarely equates to an advantage. The first 100 games usually introduce a fairly steep learning curve, to the point that it doesn't matter who a beginner plays... plus they aren't being matched up against people who do have all the champions. Once they do reach a level where it matter which champions they won, they have enough in game money to buy good ones in each role. This is just a weak complaint that DOTA fans like to use to make their game look better

@Gallowhand @Stebsis There's a lot more variation in the RTS/RPG genres -- a more appropriate comparison would probably be FPS games, and I think most gamers would say we have too many of those too. Having choice is fine, but we don't need 15 games that do almost the exact same thing (very minor differences). There's not enough room in the market for so many.

Inevitably, most of them are going to flop and shut down anyways, but still. I'd rather see the development resources go towards something more interesting.

@Gallowhand

I've actually noticed a lack of RTS games recently. There aren't really any new IPs (that I've noticed), and those based one older IPs are switching genres.

Warcraft turned into an MMO. AoE tried to do the whole online RTS thing. Command & Conquer flopped after the last attempt and C&C: Generals 2 went F2P.

@SirNormanislost I think he's confused with the Marvel hack and slash RPG.  Which by genre standard, has similar input and look.

@ZaeRawnd @horizonwriter I do which is why I mentioned both, but different studios have different visions of characters and different artists working on those visions, no matter who their parent company is.

After playing marvel super hero squad online I've discovered that gazillion games have horrible support and policies. They treat major bugs such as the chat not working for a month like it's nothing. They don't even announce it as a problem.

They bring the servers down for unplanned maintenances for hours so you reset your daily reward. (means 1 week loss of in game currency) and they don't compensate for it.

You report bugs and they'll not even understand what you're talking about. Give a formulaic response and tell you to update your drivers (even though you included in your report that you have the latest drivers).

I have very little hope they'll do better with Marvel Heroes. Don't trust them with real money is my advice.

@maitkarro @SirNormanislost yeah I saw that which I may try but I skipped diablo3 because after the ammount of time I put into D2 I just can't play that type of game anymore

A Moba on the other hand I would really like

@Poodger It does matter because you need THOUSANDS of games to have all the champions, rune pages and possible rune combinations. If you had all that from the start or even a hundred games in, it would be ok.

You can download dota2 right now and make a crazy build and actually test it. You can't do that in LoL without wasting IP and forget about it if you don't have the champion.

Just to point out how casualized it is, people have "main" champions in LoL while you must be able to play ALL of them effectively in dota to be considered average.

Another thing I don't like is the restrictive metagame. Try playing a ranked without a jungler and see everyone go batshit insane.

 The only thing dota2 is lacking right now is the few heroes that are not ported yet and a proper rating system. Maybe a surrender/concede option.

Dota has been around for years and has years of balance on it. I stopped playing like 5 years ago and there are maybe 6 new heroes. Compare that to the 2 monthly new champs LoL has.

Once you play those games and understand their mechanics, you will easily see LoL flaws and you will stop pretending they are features.

@wexorian @enartloc @jorge69696 @Winchester01

dota 2 is a hardcore game for the people that played the WC3 MOD,LoL is a casual large scope take on that,i don't know why people like you or the guy above me have to be fanboys just because use play one or the other.Both games have qualities and flaws,that don't make them mutually exclusive.And the 90% thing you say is irrelevant,just because something is popular,doesn't mean it's actually good.
