DayZ sells 1M, Dean Hall says "so much for the death of PC gaming"

DayZ alpha still selling like hotcakes on Steam Early Access.

The DayZ alpha has reached another milestone: it has sold 1 million copies within four weeks of being released on Steam Early Access.

What does creator Dean Hall have to say about that? "So much for the death of PC gaming." Quite!

"This gives me mandate now to make all the crazy games I ever wanted," added Hall on Twitter, once again confirming that the current sales tally is "way, way beyond" what the studio expected.

Owners of the alpha version shouldn't be expecting it to reach beta anytime soon, however; Bohemia Interactive says it's unlikely we'll see a DayZ beta in 2014.

DayZ is currently the top-selling game on Steam, and has regularly held the spot since its release on Valve's digital store.

I think that 1M might be a little fluffed up.  It might have been illegally downloaded 1M times though.  PC gaming may not be dead, but it certainly isn't doing well.  When 8-9 year old consoles still compete successfully with current PC titles, you know there is a problem.  If it wasn't for Steam, PC gaming would be about as mainstream as spinning your own yarn on a wooden wheel.

Never thought PC gaming was dying. Same for the consoles of course. Just confirms my thoughts that whoever says otherwise is just trolling or trying to get attention and needs to find better, more believable things to lie about.

Why does the PC community feels the need to constantly remind us PC gaming isnt dying? Insecure much?

This is how the PC gaming industry stays alive. It has suckers who will pay for an incomplete game. And then pay again for the full verison.

That was the point I was trying to make! Bug testing was, and should still be, a paid job

I always wonder why some folks say pc/console gaming is dead. Then I just happen to remember the world is full of functioning retards some of which are in charge of other people.

PC gaming isn't dying, quality games are. A million people bought this messy, buggy junk for $30, and I guarantee that it will still be messy and buggy after release based on Bohemia's track record (Arma 3). Not to mention the fact that it looks EXACTLY like the FREE mod. Well done gamers, well done!

Sorry, I didn't quite get it. Why he said "death of PC gaming"?

Who the FUCK says piracy hurts the gaming industry, on the contrary it helps it, piracy risen slightly last year or so, but gaming industry profited so much, so of course PC gaming aint dead, buy some pirate some.

The people who say that the game is in Alpha and that you shouldn't expect much are correct, but don't buy into the hype if you've been on the fence about it. This game is buggy as hell, damn near empty, chugs along, has erratic camera movement, offers nothing in the form of quick travel on a ginormous map like this, requires you to alt+tab out of the game to look at the map (or own a second monitor) etc. etc. It's just nowhere close to completion, and the devs themselves have stated this. Their vision and intentions are ambitious, but who knows what can happen a year from now. Hell, they could get lazy off of all this money and just half ass it now.

A friend bought this game for me and I seriously feel bad that he dropped money on a game I have no intention of trudging through right now. Hopefully it'll get better as development goes along, but right now I have a sense of guilt for having this game in my library and not being the one who paid for it. With a beta not even in sight for another year, I feel 30 bucks is a steep price to play bug tester.

In my opinion, the game as it stands now is worth maybe 5 bucks, not 30. Wait until beta, or wait for a price drop. Don't throw your money at a pipe dream though. DayZ could very well be the next WarZ.

I need to play this game because I do not understand the hype at all.

I'm sure this was just a statement in regards to the common misconception that it is dying.

I bought this game immediately because the dev has given me all the reasons to want to support him. EA on the other hand has to have some sort of epic game to get me to release my money to them. Even then I only have a handful of EA games. The less I have to use origin the better. EA will never stop paying the price for trying to force origin on me. Never.

I think its dumb to pay up front to bug test a game. thats a job you get paid to do...not the other way around lol

All the people complaining on here about how crappy it is, just wow. Alpha is Alpha, as long as you can play it without crashing or game breaking bugs, which i haven't experienced either of yet, then its worthy of being called an Alpha. Performance isn't bad either, got a friend with a gt 540 and an i3 who can play it on low settings fine. The game's a blast

@Gravity_Slave Ugh... don't be an ignorant fool. the 1 Million number is from purchases, those unique players playing on the LEGIT servers. Starbound has also sold 1 million.

Your crap statement belongs nowhere except system wars.

@Gravity_Slave You have to start somewhere adn if you have ever been a part of STEAMS deal day, you would fully understand how completely awesome STEAM is. Regardless of what platform you play on. I havent even LOOKED at a nextgen console because of it, i have completely ditched all consoles in the last few years completely , PC gaming soley. Im more excited for NEXT deal day, than Xbox 1 or PS4 exclusives. Im serious.

naryanrobinson
naryanrobinson

@Gravity_Slave It's doing incredibly well no matter which way you look at it.  You've totally misunderstood how the console market works.  The 9 year old consoles will compete just as well as one year old consoles, saying that PC gaming isn't doing well because the 360 is still around doesn't make any sense.

nyran125tk
nyran125tk

@Vatusus Its because publishers kept stating that we dotn want to release games on PC anymore, thats why. When Crysis 1 was first released in 2006 , Crytec, said theyll NEVER make a PC game again and EA took all their sports games off PC completely, accept for FIFA and Tiger Woods and kept making shitty versions of their console games for PC, which is actually REALLY FRIGGIN INSULTING to PC gamers.

NOW PC is actual valid competition for the consoles than its ever been and i guess PC gamers are just like"Fck you , for not believing in this platform and treating it like a joke"

Publishers constantly tried to demean PC gamers for years. Stating that every PC gamer is a pirate. Where its now come to the front, that PC gamers just never had a reliable GOOD retailing service to purchase games and are willing to PAY for games if they are at a good price.

You don't pay again smart one.

Ah bask in the ignorance of fools like these.

UltimateBastard

You don't pay again for the full version. This is how PC gaming is improved, by gamers participating in the development so when the full version is released the problems are already sorted.

mikemaj82
mikemaj82

@hammoud  Sure if that many people are buying such a crappy game, what motivates the developers to improve it?

UltimateBastard
UltimateBastard

Quick travel? That's just silly. The idea is to explore and loot, not fast travel to the northern barracks get a gun and start a deathmatch as everyone would be doing. Also your suppose to find a map not alt+tab out to the net, and I've never had any bother finding populated servers. I'm not sure you understand this game. They wouldn't make much money selling it for 5 quid now considering you don't pay anything more at launch, I think the slightly reduced price of the early access is acceptable. The money they've made from this could very well go into employing more staff to improve the game, I seriously doubt they would simply sit on their hands for the next year. He even said when warz came out he was pissed off because people thought it was his work and was such a hash

@sirkibble2 check out some videos on YouTube. Just remember to search for 'Dayz standalone' or you'll get mostly videos for the mod on ARMA 2.

There are people on every night enjoying a game that, while rough around the edges, is perfectly playable. It is in Alpha, sure, but there's no obligation to those people to "bug test" - they play out of choice. A lot of them do, in fact.

I'd love to be able to play a game like Battlefield 4 or Call of Duty, and parallel to that be suggesting cool features that would then actually be added. The fact is, you don't get that kind of relationship with games like that (and if you do it's part of a PR stunt, probably sponsored by Doritos or something). However, with DayZ your ideas are genuinely heard, and sometimes celebrated, by a dev team who are very active within their own community.

It's a risk factor for sure to buy a game in alpha. That's why I think the people who are complaining about the bugs and how "broken" it is, given the warnings and disclaimer from the developer to pretty much avoid purchasing this in it's alpha stage, are dumber.

@WolfGreyAhh I'm getting so tired of you people. Your favorite word is ignorance...it's all you know how to say when it comes to anything but PC gaming. Get off the high horse....PC gaming is for a select group of people who spend their money on nothing but upgrading their computers and sitting in dark rooms at their desk with glowing keyboards and giant mouses with quick keys on them.

@UltimateBastard

umm since when did paying for an alpha (not even a beta mind you) become a good thing. idiot.

I've played dozens of console betas and not once paid a dime.  In fact I got the game free most times.

@mikemaj82 @Gravity_Slave DoTA 2 and League of Legends... being bigger than any console game... makes your point redundant.

back to your caves trolls.

Although I will agree I think buying Day Z in its current state is stupid.

and lol at the free beta access Gravity Slave... your full of s*it most of them are from pre-orders or buying another game.
