DayZ release info, pricing model revealed

Early access alpha available after June; price to increase when game is released.

The standalone version of apocalyptic survival mod DayZ is getting closer to public release, creator Dean "Rocket" Hall confirmed in an interview with Gamasutra.

"So what we're doing at the moment is, we gave free keys as a gift to the forum moderators, the Reddit moderators, people who helped out with DayZ development, and stuff like that," Hall said. "I guess there's about 30-100 people involved with that."

Systems such as Steam’s Early Access service allow players to buy in early while games are still in the developmental phase, rewarding those who invest early with discounted prices. It’s a model that the upcoming DayZ standalone will mirror.

“From here, once we've finished our server/client architecture--because we're moving it [to] an MMO model--we're reviewing the situation of that in June, and then we do an alpha, just like Minecraft. People pay X amount of dollars and they get early, cheap access to it, and then once it's beta, price goes up, maybe, say, $10, and once it goes retail, the price goes up $10.” Hall said.

DayZ was originally slated to launch before the end of 2012. Hall recently took a two month leave of absence to climb Mount Everest. Last month, the creator said that a console port of DayZ was "almost certain".

So it's going to be an MMO?  Meaning you won't be able to run your own small servers?

The play control needs to be smoothed out for better pvp and overall control, as well as calibrated for those who wish to use a gaming controller. Other than that, cannot wait for this game. Would love to see it on the PS4 or even the Wii U.

I hope someone takes the idea of this game and makes a co-op game based on it. If you had xp/ranking and randomized weapons like Borderlands, but you had to be cautious and work together with your friends to survive, it would be lots of fun. Right now, the only real co-op zombie games are either bullet spray-fests (left4dead) or utilizing clunky controls in order to make them intense (RE:5 co-op). Having a truly open-world survival co-op game would be rad - but again, only if your efforts led to some permanent rewards. I lost interest in the DayZ mod because you could spend hours finding your friends and trying to survive only to be killed in lame ways (sniped by someone you never see, killed by a zombie spawning where you had already cleared, getting stuck in a texture by a glitch, etc.) - if there were permanent unlocks from playing, you would still feel like you were making progress even if you die.

I did like this game at one time, but I got tired of being killed more by the other people playing than the zombies. This is a game about zombies, so I assumed that I would be killed and expected to be killed by the zombies not other players. You know what they about assumptions. So that ruined what could have been a really good game that should have been a lot of fun.

I am now looking forward to State of Decay that comes out soon, and that is a game like DayZ but it is just single-player for now.

YES YES YES FINNALLLYYYY the main change the biggest imo is the mmo system preventing script kiddies to go wild :D

Only reason I have stopped playing this game is because of hackers. Having to constantly worry about if someone is going to port behind you and kill you is the most annoying thing. Thankfully they're making everything server side. Hopefully they add more things to work towards progression wise. At the moment you get the best gun and you're set.

hope the zombies are an actual threat not like some other lame games (dead island im looking at u)

from what i saw on youtube seems laggy and choppy and zombies moved in a spazy way, but the videos are probably alpha, I find the whole concept interesting tbh but nothing kills a game like bad ping

Cool, will buy the Alpha early access version and support it gladly. A console port is also a great idea, it's stupid not to do it. The more people that get to play DayZ the better

Console port? That would be wildly successful but similar to the xbox version of Minecraft, it will be made for idiots. The game is made to be complicated and difficult. As long as they don't do cross platform, I don't really care.

If it was $10 right off the bat, I will buy the crap out of it.

Played the mod as it was ok.. really nothing special. Won't be bothering with the standalone. Highly over rated.

make it cross platform so PC players can rape some console players

If this game was developed for next gen...my mind would explode.

"I guess there's about 30-100 people involved with that." That's a wide estimate. Also, I wonder what the starting price will be.

Christ a console port. lol. they are going to have to tone it right down for the facemashing idiots bigtime. Expect achievements for walking 20ft, powerups and a difficulty curve not unlike stamping on bunnys!

Just hope there can be goals/achievements/accolades/missions/side-quests/endgame (anything, honestly). I loved dayz but It gets a little boring and turns into a squirrel simulator or a deathmatch pvp. The least they could do is let you spawn with friends, that's the least I'm asking. Looking forward to it.

is it running on the Arma 2 engine?

@soulfulDAGGER I hate to be that guy but I doubt the WiiU could run it at all. Maybe if its better optimized than the mod by a lot, but its doubtful. It would be really cool for inventory management to drag items in and out of your pockets and backpack

stealthyninja81
stealthyninja81

@ghstbstr without humans it would be way to predictable in my opinion. also you can join low population servers and the chances of running into people anywhere except NW airfield and Cherno are pretty low.

soccerpzn
soccerpzn

@ghstbstr The game isnt  about killing zombies its about how to survive in a zombie apocalypse. And so it was to be expected of people to get better weapons which in turn makes them more of a threat. The game wasnt ruined you just didnt know how to play it

Poison-tooth
Poison-tooth

@vadagar1 Zombies are a real threat in Dayz. You cant shoot without being swarmed and they also give up your position so that other players can kill you. That said, players remain the #1 threat wich is awesome imo.

Poison-tooth

@Rattlesnake_8 The mod is great! Surviving against organized group of players is fun and challenging. Not for impatients loners...

@highlanderjimd I hope not, but it seems like integrity goes out the window the moment console $ comes into play, Crysis developer said they would never put the game on console back when part1 came out since it would limit what they could do in terms of GFX, memory etc.  we all know how that played out.

stealthyninja81

@genjuroT some of the mods (yes I know DayZ itself is a mod but the mod itself has been modified by several people..... modception) have some really cool stuff that takes a lot of time and effort. I know a mod called Origins has some really cool house building among other stuff.

@Halloll It's running on a midified version of the take on helicopters engine with with features of the Arma 3 engine (such as lighting) thrown in.

RikuoftheSnow

@Halloll It's running on a older version of arma 3s engine so the grtaphics are pretty damn good :)

Well if you are any indication of what the human race would do in zombie apocalypse that is if one would happen then we as a human race are doomed to fail. The way you say it we would all just end up killing each other, and the zombies would rule the earth.

Have fun with DayZ since I am done with it, and I just can't wait for State of Decay because then I don't have to worry about people like you to ruin my fun and the experience the game should have.

XIntoTheBlue

@soccerpzn @ghstbstr "This game wasnt ruined you just didnt know how to play it". Actually, more like ghstbstr didn't know how to play it according to soccerpzn's view of what DayZ should be. That's what I got from that statement. Like any sandbox game, how one plays it is defined by what they want to do within what's possible, not what some random dude says how people should play.

DayZ was fun for a while, but the restraints it had with being a mod of ARMA II became apparent and that made me lose interest in the long run.

domxnik

@stealthyninja81 @domxnik True, but hacking is too easy in the game and there are still many hackers. There hasn't been as many as launch but there is still a good amount.

@mindfreak4563 @seanmcloughlin Cross platform between consoles is one thing, but consoles and PC means console guys getting owned all the time.... And that's coming from a console player.....

stealthyninja81
stealthyninja81

@domxnik @stealthyninja81 yeah I hear you the worst is ESP hackers cause its so hard to tell if their legit or not. Ive never played it myself, but apparently this mod called Breaking Point makes it so you have to install this program that checks for cheats, and if it finds any your computer is banned from joining any Breaking Point servers.
