DayZ alpha released on Steam

$29.99 for in-development version of open-world zombie survival game.

The standalone version of DayZ is now available on Steam early access for $29.99.

Developer Bohemia Interactive warns that this alpha version of the game, which runs on Windows only, is very much a "work in progress" and does not advise people purchase the game in this state unless they are interested in watching the game's development.

“DayZ Early Access is your chance to experience DayZ as it evolves throughout its development process," reads the game's description. "Be aware that our Early Access offer is a representation of our core pillars, and the framework we have created around them. It is a work in progress and therefore contains a variety of bugs. We strongly advise you not to buy and play the game at this stage unless you clearly understand what Early Access means and are interested in participating in the ongoing development cycle.”

The standalone version of DayZ was originally announced in 2012, and was intended to be released in alpha form before the end of last year. Compared to its original release as a mod for ArmA II, the long-delayed DayZ standalone will feature a new client/server architecture, gear deterioration, locational damage, and a new inventory system.

Shouldn't compare this to any other zombie game, the raw survival and interactions with other players is what defines DayZ, not the jerky zombies.

Has the 'zig-zag' zombie pathing been fixed yet? That was the only problem that was keeping me from playing this game. I NEED TO KNOW IF ITS BEEN FIXED THX IN ADVANCE!! ^^

What a HORRIBLE idea -- I simply cannot believe that Steam would allow such a shady practice.  "Here, pay money for a product that is absolutely, publicly, UNFINISHED."

Early access my ass -- more like "fund us so we don't run out of money before it's actually done."   No, if they didn't plan correctly then they need to pay the consequences.

People, DON'T buy into this mess.  This is the start of a simply awful trend for gamers.

This generation... They never learned to read. As a matter of fact, most early access games state that the game is a work in progress and is not the full game yet complain about it to no end.

To the end of "There was a time when beta testers were paid", yeah when companies have the money to do it, most early access games are done by indie developers who don't have the money to hire beta testers. As a matter of fact if i am interested in a game, early access gives gamers the ability to not only play a game early, but have a voice in the direction of the game.

Played the mod for a while, disliking the game more and more as time went on. And after delaying several times we finally get the stand alone release and the game is still in Alpha and we have to put down 30 bucks for it? Well not me, game had potential but I feel they wasted it.

This should have been the quote before BF4 was released too

I remember a tome when game testers used to get paid instead of paying.

Hi guys,

I didn't play Arma, is it an online game or stand alone? and also is Dayz better than State of Decay?

the only thing I don't like about dayZ is that it is so hard to find people that will work with you instead of putting a bullet in you.

I figure I'd put this here because as history has shown us people love to not read the article and then spout uneducated crap into the comment section so maybe some of them will go to comment and then read this

He really went back on his word about the pricing for alpha not being more then 20 and 30 on full release. Not worth it to play game on very outdated engine(not even updated Real Virtuality 4 for arma 3)that not even made to run this type of game.

shreddyz

there's an all caps warning on the page. so expect a lot of bugs. for $30 bucks that's a 'let's read reviews first' kind of game. if you don't care about potentially throwing away that money then get it. but steam just has too many cheap and good deals to dwell on ANOTHER ZOMBIE game. imo.

Wow, that screenshot looks so STALKER-like! I hope the game is similar at least in some respects, STALKER was one-of-a-kind and it would be really nice to have something similar to play... CoP (and even more so CS and ShoC) are really starting to show their age at this point.

hmmm....really hoping DayZ is heading for Ps4/Xbone. This is a game that I really enjoyed way back in May/June.

@Pyrosa Think and read before you post something. Arma 3 was released the same way and it worked great, people were able to enjoy the game earlier and help with the alpha and beta process. This early access is a great way for them to be able to troubleshoot the bugs and get the community involved. This version is not for casual players but players that want to get involved and see this from the beginning.

shingui5

@Pyrosa

So you've never heard of Early access before then?

Frankly, iot's a great way to support a small indie team, by buying there game while it's still in production. Obviously the buyer needs to know the risks and troubles involved in this process, and if theyt understand that, then there is nothing wrong with them buying the product.

Hell, i've recently bought Starbound which is still in Early access, and it's fun to watch it constantly evolve with every iteration of the game.

shingui5
shingui5

@Halloll

This is a process used by small teams, even one-two man temas will go for early access. These people can't afford the extensive Q&A testers that people like EA or Ubisoft can. Besides that, having Early access helps give the community a way to direct the actual development of the game.

@asifah30 Online/ Standalone. different games. Dayz has survivability but, players do what they want. Open world PVP etc.

MigzBR
MigzBR

@C-THREE if you dont try to socialize and look for clans and ppl to play with u will most likely play alone for a while. This is a survival game and not knowing the other ppl adds to that aspect of the game.

BuBsay

@C-THREECompletely agreed, they really need to put in some kind of incentive to work together with strangers.

@pyro1245 This game started on PC as an Arma 2 mod. It's been around for some time. Many others have copied the idea. DayZ standalone is made by the same creator of the mod.. He was offered the opportunity to make it.

@stealthyninja81  WARNING: THIS GAME IS EARLY ACCESS ALPHA. PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE IT UNLESS YOU WANT TO ACTIVELY SUPPORT DEVELOPMENT OF THE GAME AND ARE PREPARED TO HANDLE WITH SERIOUS ISSUES AND POSSIBLE INTERRUPTIONS OF GAME FUNCTIONING.

I don't know from where you quoted that but here it is from Steam.

pyro1245
pyro1245

@stealthyninja81 but when you buy it early you still get the finished product once it's released and even some extra stuff sometimes.

@NEWJERSEY-DEVIL This is the game that was a craze and spawned the knockoff WarZ.

This is the original Arma mod DayZ in a standalone state.

Toysoldier34
Toysoldier34

@shreddyz That is just making sure people realize it is an alpha build and not to be upset when it plays like an alpha.

sensesfail99

@1wikkid1Im a huge fan of the STALKER series and i have the Day Z mod, not the standalone that was just released. Ive been playing it for about a month now and its not JUST like STALKER, but there is a certain feel to it that is similar. Also on the mod ive played on servers where you can wear the STALKER Loner, Freedom, and Duty suits. If your a fan of STALKER, id def give Day Z a try, but right now in its alpha phase, expect ALOT of bugs. Id wait if you want a polished experience.

@1wikkid1if you haven't tried DayZ, I would recommend you try it. It is a great game :)

@MigzBR @Pyrosa Difference is dayz is not working well.  Also 30 bucks for an alpha is to much.  I don't mind spending for an early release, i have many times, but 30 bucks is to much for me to help you fix your game.

aihyah

@AggrandizedUser@Getesh

Free? If you wanted to be a "real" beta tester then sure, but real beta testers play in very strange ways, sometimes just playing a small segment of a level over and over and over to reproduce a bug.  This is early access, like being able to ride Disneyland ride that isn't quite done so you can be the first to see.  You aren't doing them a favor.

MigzBR
MigzBR

@AggrandizedUser @Getesh You are buying the game a head of time and you would have to spend the same money or maybe more on release. This is also for core gamers that have been waiting to play this game for a while. This is not for the casual player. If you dont want to be a part of it right now you really don't have to. A lot of people have spend quite a bit of time playing Dayz and would love to get on the standalone asap so they can start adapting to the new game.

kargion
kargion

@AggrandizedUser @Getesh Agree.....15 bucks max for Alpha.  Don't mind helping it get developed but 30 bucks is to much to help them fix their game.

deathblow3
deathblow3

@shingui5 @Halloll then you give the game out for free and have people test it for free something they should be paying testers to do. but no ou would rather pay the company to work for them??? no game is that good

shreddyz

@Toysoldier34 @shreddyz Yea that large green banner reading EARLY ACCESS isn't enough for today's gamer i suppose.

edit sorry it's blue!

@jimdove2@_Judas_Hmm... I guess this is a possibility, but hopefully they can, if a ported version arrives that is, harness the power of the PS4 by then and present a beautiful end-product :)

MigzBR
MigzBR

@kargion @MigzBR @Pyrosa Well you are paying the price of the game why not buy it now and get a head start on it? You would still need to spend that money when the game came out. This release is for the core players and casual players are not encouraged to buy it anyways.

shingui5
shingui5

@Pikdum @shingui5 @NEWJERSEY-DEVIL

What a horrible thing to happen to a small iindie dev, for your name to be dragged through the mud because someone else ripped off your idea, then did it very poorly :/

Toysoldier34
Toysoldier34

@Pikdum @shingui5 @NEWJERSEY-DEVIL Yes aside from it being a blatant rip off, it also tarnished the name of his game.

The main selling point of WarZ was simply making people think it was DayZ and hoping they buy it. Since DayZ was merely a mod and WarZ was a stand alone it wasn't clear to people what the truth behind it all was.
