Dawn of War II: Retribution gets collector's edition

Second stand-alone expansion for THQ's Warhammer 40,000 strategy series picks up $40 premium pack; preorder-based in-game enhancements also detailed.

On March 1, THQ will release the second stand-alone expansion to its well-regarded PC sci-fi strategy title Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II, Retribution. When it does, gamers will have a pair of configurations to pick up the package in, as well as a bevy of preorder bonuses.

The top-tier $40 Collector's Edition box features both in-game perks and desktop tchotchkes for Warhammer 40,000 fans. Wargamers' virtual goods include bonus equipment for each of the game's six playable races: Space Marines, Chaos Space Marines, Orks, Eldar, Tyranid, and Imperial Guard. The out-of-game perks include a poster, playing cards for each race, and premium packaging.

Behold, the war chest of Warhammer.

Warhammer 40,000 gamers can alternatively pick up in-game bonuses for just their chosen allegiance by preordering the $30 standard digital edition of the game. Gamers interested in Ork-related swag must preorder the game through Valve's digital distribution service Steam, while the Tyranid perks can only be had through THQ.com. Alternatively, gamers can pick up bonuses specific to their faction of choice through a variety of digital distribution services.

Retribution follows on from the events that transpired in Dawn of War II's first expansion, Chaos Rising. Set 10 years later, the game sees the Imperium reeling after an apparent betrayal by Gabriel Angelos' Space Marines. Gamers will be able to assume command of their chosen faction to experience the events of the game as they play out.

I really want THQ to start working on another Company of Heroes expansion, and I mean a proper one with either Russians or Japanese.

I want to use the Psykers again! and check out the 40k movie that just came out as well, it's about the Ultramarines and the animation really isn't that bad for being a low budget movie: http://tiny.cc/wbx8c

@RussianRAGE Yes that is impressive but it's one big risk they are taking. The more "content" they have in collector's edition the more it's going to cost, like how the Legendary Edition for Halo cost around 100 dollars to make cuz of the helmet, same thing with their collector's edition, if they do not sell enough they are going to under sale and loss alot of profit :p

@Rougehunter I believe Retribution is a steamworks title like the two games before it, so it will require steam to play, in addition to having steam achievements instead of being a Games for Windows - LIVE title. Also, want this. Will be pre-ordering ASAP.

Wish the Tyranid pack was on steam. Hope I can register it to my steam account.

If there's no collectors edition on Steam I'm not buying it, I'll go with the regular one instead.

So..... No "collector's edition on steam??? Can't those company realise that it suck to buy a game at a place you WANT and receive less because you didn't take it at the place THEY want and make the more money. I'm pointing toward you too EA dragon Age 2.

Looks like a deja vu, for me at least: When Relic released Dawn Of War 1, it was a good game but felt like it's missing something. Then came Winter Assault which I skipped entirely. Finally they made the Dark Crusade which was in my opinion the perfect WH40K game. It had everything I want (multiple campaigns, base building, great tactical gameplay etc ). The same thing happened with Dawn of War 2, which I enjoyed but felt something missing, then Chaos Rising came out, and now it looks like they're going to make the "Dark Crusade" of Dawn of War 2 ( multiple campaings, choice between standard base building and more tactical gameplay, and great story ). This is going to be the ulimate DoW!

the game looks promising, but i still miss the old fashioned rts game that warhammer once was, keepin fingers crossed that Dow3 is a bloody rts game, "the patient hunter, gets the prey"

Chaos rising set the bar pretty high, hope Retributions gets even better. And here's hoping that DoW 3 will be more like DoW 1

Also promised myself I wouldnt buy another DoW2 like many of your though...we'll see. Im pretty set with SC2 and my other games but if this proves good Ill get it on a Steam sale. No GFWL though...which is great.

That is such a great idea on how they did the expansions! Im definently picking this up!

VivaRevolucion

Don't get too hyped about this, Relic isn't developing. And Warhammer Video Games weren't even worth mentioning until Relic came around.... got a bad feeling about this, just like DoW originals last expansion. The worst part about it is that if this expansion fails the online will most likely fall right off with it.

can't wait for this one!

@herodotus2006 The items from the specific race packs are for the campaigns only. Here is the Dawn of War community site that has official information: http://community.dawnofwar2.com/forums/topic/44587. Also, if you have Steam you can look at the race packs there minus Tyranids since that pack is an exclusive pre-order from the THQ store.

So, I guess that this confirms that the added race is indeed the Imperial Guard - the Hammer of the Emperor!!!

I'm so ready for thi after re-playing "Chaos Rising" half a dozen times. Not sure about the in-game items in the CE, as they will no doubt be for MP and I don't play much of that. So far though, the pricing looks more than reasonable and I'll be getting a boxed retail copy, just not sure about the CE. That's just me, anyway.

IonNerd

So, wait, do we have to pre-order the game to get the $40 collector's edition? Or, will it be available in retail stores?
