Dawn of War II overruns global PC charts

THQ lauds opening-week success of Relic's far-future RTS, as judged by NPD, Chart-Track, and GfK.

by

Earlier this week, the NPD Group named THQ and Relic Entertainment's Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II as its top-selling PC title in the US for the week of February 15-February 21. As it turn outs, Dawn of War II's success extends well beyond US shores.

THQ today touted Dawn of War II as the top-selling PC title during its debut week in nearly all major Western markets, including the US, UK, Europe, and Australasia. The publisher notes that its sales data was provided by ELSPA/GfK Chart-Track and GfK, as well as the aforementioned NPD Group. THQ has yet to reveal specific sell-in or sell-through numbers.

More than just an early-sales success, Dawn of War II has also enjoyed a strong critical reception. The game's single-player campaign mode resembles more of an action role-playing game, dropping players into the heavily armored spaulders of a Space Marine commander as he leads his band against hordes of Orks, Eldar, and Tyranid. Dawn of War II also features online multiplayer battles for up to six across a number of modes.

@Humorguy_basic ahh i wish you had some brains this game has explosively good multiplayer and as has been shown before in a game good multiplayer will propel a game forever, as long as the dev doesn't ditch it (thinks about crysis). but anyway i think that DOW2 will sell just as well as the other DOW games because it is simply a REALLY good game and anything that is good will continu to sell for years to come.

This is good to here because some PC games are only for the US.

It's good to see some PC games doing good, especially with the piracy issues going on. This shows that if you make a game that's worthy enough piracy shouldn't be of any concern.

Congrats to the Relic Team and all who worked on the project!!!

eternity21, if you like red Alert and Starcraft, you really need to get the first DOW and the expansions, which can be bought quite cheap on ebay. You'll be surprised at the strategy in these earlier DOW's, especially some of the later standalone expansions

Trust me, in February, it doesn't take much to get to No.1. On console, like with say Oblivion, or Fallout 3 notice how they talk about how many UNITS sold, (like Fallout 3 with it's INITIAL ship of 4 million units) rather than chart position? If sales units were given, PC gamers would be shocked. It's no point telling you I think DOW II has not yet sold 200,000, as I know you won't believe me. You also have to see what this game is selling in a month's time, because the original DOW sold well over quite a long period, which is why it got so many expansions. I doubt DOW II will match DOW's sales, and I doubt DOW II will see more than one expansion. I think the same will go for Empire TW over Rome and Medieval II. Generally, people want their strategy at a strategy pace. Not like DOW II at an FPS pace. These latter, more shallow games will have much lower lifespans, while the earlier versions will continue to be played. After all, for DOW II, how difficult would it be to have a menu option for base-building or no base building? I mean, we have PC's that can handle that nowadays, surely?!

I've never played dawn of war before. How is it compared to Red Alert? or Starcraft? Warcraft?

I kind of miss the old style DoW with base building, but I appreciate the new faster pace of the game. In the end the combat is still DoW, so it wins in my book

@ mat30- I agree with you brother, A very fun mulit player game, but i just wish that there where more maps. I expecting like maybe 20 maps to start off with, but still this is a very fun RTS

I love DoW2 because you have to think about what you're doing. I agree Paladin basic DoW wasn't that impressive. But i think they should make a W40k game like Medieval Total War because then you could get masive battles. But overall i love DoW2

I'm a big DOW fan and at first wasn't too impressed with DOW2 but now I love it. The campaign has kept me going for at least as long as DOW did, and I find it much more tactical. Very good game sold at a nice price (£25 pre-order) BTW:- the 360 comment below I assume means the Xbox not the direction ;-)

Being a huge warhammer fan (for like 15 years) i have to say that DoW 2 reflects the Space Marines [perfectly in terms of single player. In most novels they're only 10 marines against infinite legions of chaos, hordes of orks and what not. Multiplayer is balanced to perfection is superbly fun. A great mix of Company of Heroes and warhammer...which is what it should be like.

PS @firedrakes Pretty sure you meant 180, dude. You see, if you do a 360, you've just done a complete circle and are back at the original place you started... so nothing's changed. Just wanted to calrify.

Too bad my AGP video card crapped out on me. Now I have to wait until I build a new rig, but that probably won't happen till MS releases Windows 7. Hopefully they hurry up with that. Sorry not really relevant, just saying :)

i love the game but the price of it didn't reflect the content, i was suprised by the limited number of multiplayer and single player content while the multiplayer is indeed balanced to perfection, the limited number of maps, modes, and poor matchmaking retard the experience simultaneously the single player has a comprehensive and fun loot system but the levels themselves and the story just plain disapoint, especially after company of heroes.

itachi100
itachi100

the game hugely lacked in content, every single player mission is the EXACT same thing, and there is only 5 or 6 maps in multiplayer.... pitiful :-|

DOW and all the expansions were brilliant and DOW2 is a total let down they added to much action/rpg.

yes, the gameplay of it has changed but warhammer 40k has the coolest characters and units ever in history of gaming! I bought the game... it's not that addicting though but I surely want it in my collection! I will be waiting for the expansion.... hoping they'll add the Tau empire as a campaign mission

Hopefully Relics success on the PC will inspire them to do a non-consolized Homeworld 3.

PC gaming will never die, just to let you know because it's the best kind of gaming there is *and probably ever will* despite the fact so many games are pirated, but it's only a matter of time (if it hasn't already happened) that it will spread on the consoles anyway.

People should not pass this game just because it has games for windows live. In no means the game play relies on GFWL. I think it adds one more notch in replay value by having the achievements. I don't care about the points. But the achievments itself. In example killing a boss using only the commander I would have never thought about that. Its a good game and play it.

I have DoWII and for an RTS it isn't too bad. I really am not a RTS fan so that is saying something. I think what has me is the co-op campaign game and the fact that you aren't overwhelmed with a lot of units to flip past. But, I still have to say that I prefer something "else" in PC games. Still, DoWII is a good game. I would hate this on console though. I hate RTS's on consoles in general including the lastest End War and HaloWars.

nice, dow2 deserves all its success, how many companies are willing to take a winning formula and gamble with a new gameplay style that is just as good in its own way. Certainly not many and even fewer can do it so well

Hmmmm after playing the multiplayer beta i will not get DoW II total let down for me my brother got it and now hes pissed off about the match making and GFWL. it counts his losses but not his wins lol

awesome news about DoW2. i am playing the game now and it rocks. And people have been claiming PC gaming is dead for the last 10 years. And I still play games on it, so they need to shut the hell up.

People will catch on… Relic will not last that much longer with such a horrible history of online support. They are riding on the success of DoW & CoH. The sad thing is I so wanted this game to succeed, but it doesn’t. The reason why SC will blow DoW2 out of the water in the long run is because of almost solid online play, better patching, and better overall polish. F@*%$ you very much Relic.

KP_Maker

Dow2 STINKS!!!!!!!!!! I cannot fathom how much I hate this game. I was a big fan of DoW & CoH, and the more I play DoW2 the more I hate it. Really it should be the more I "TRY" to play DoW2, since there are so many pathetic technical issues with Steam & GFWL. I was so excited when DoW2 was announced, and wanted to so like this game, playing it over and over, but the end result is *(&&^%$#$^**&&^&^%&^&*. I will no longer support you Relic; you lost me as a fan plain and simple. Your pathetic A.I. has become your new mantra. Your pathetic patching is an absolute joke. Finally, your arrogant attitude of “Don’t bit*$# at us” has put me over the edge. You cannot even create a game that is actually playable online- DoW’s Gamespy Stinks, CoH’s online service STINKS, and now GFWL with Steam STINKS (always too busy.)

I really wanted this game, but I detest the Games for windows live service, so they lost a sale

Console gaming with $500.00+ consoles and $60.00+ games makes PC gaming look cheap by comparison;only the noobs think you have to spend thousands to have acceptable PC gaming. The numbers are respectable, but I'm intersted to see how DOW 2's numbers stand up against SC2's.

"Dawn of War II also features online multiplayer battles for up to six across a number of modes." its always best to read the entire article before posting comments. I OWN the damn game. Don't tell me what the game does or doesn't have. The "number of modes" is two, by the way. One of which sucks and can't be played in ranked games.
