Dawn of War expands again

THQ and Relic pledge a return to Warhammer 40K universe again with unnamed add-on for PC real-time strategy game.

Considering that the Warhammer 40,000 universe is built on the concept of a handful of factions locked into unending combat, it only makes sense that THQ's Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War should be a similar ongoing effort.

Today THQ and Dawn of War developer Relic Entertainment announced that they are working on a second expansion pack to the 2004 real-time strategy game. Following up on the original Dawn of War and last year's expansion, Winter Assault, this new, as-yet-untitled add-on will throw two more races into the ongoing fray, bringing the total number to seven.

One of the new races, the technologically advanced Tau, has already been unveiled, but the other is a mystery. Assuming it's an existing race from the Warhammer 40,000 tabletop strategy game, it could be the Dark Eldar, Tyranids, Necron, Witch Hunters, or Daemonhunters.

The untitled expansion is due to arrive this fall. For more on the series, check out GameSpot's reviews of Dawn of War and Winter Assault.

The only 2 i can understand is dark eldar and tau(basicly undead) but what is tyraind ,necron and witch hunter. I only spend my time making mods i never use and downloading new game maps for all warhammer or warcraft games(is there a difference between them)and lastly i just made this mod but i have not fully tested it it lets u play as force commander in single player while leadind your troops behind u (srry for posting this news)

The Tyranid Hive Warriors would make it very interesting against Terminators and Ogryn, and the idea of accepting losses just to get your Genestealers close enough to really start some nasty stuff really appeals to me. As for the Tau, this is the best news I've heard in ages. Lets just see if the Railguns on a Broadside translate well enough. I wonder if they are going to keep Commander Farsight in? As for the Necrons, they can really hurt. Even though their basic infantry is a bit limited, the Destroyers can make it very interesting!! Following on from earlier comments, the Army Painter does need a little work, as the icons are very limited. would like to see a lot more Chapter icons in there!!

It would be great if they could make the armies more customisible, with more special character weapons and powers, things like that. Being able to choose your chaos god would be cool too. Personally, I'm rooting for tyranids as the other playable species, as their options for customisation are almost endless. The Necrons however, would be awesome too, and are probably more likely to be featured, as they did apppear in Winter Assault, although only briefly. A more in-depth army painter and more chapter/sect symbols would be an improvement as well.

I think tyrannids would be cool but it does't matter to me all i want is to upgrade my Chaos space marines with the Mark Of Nurgle and get some decay into my enemies, it would look cool to see a squad of imperial guard choke on flies and rot. LOL :-)

Tyrannids would be cool but i think that it will be dark eldar

I think that it might be a good idea for them to try adding standard bearers as a command unit for each race, i know that the marines have the chaplain to hold them fast and all that but it might be good to use them in a new type of skirmish, namely capture the flag or whatever; just imagine a 4 way one where you have to hold one flag in your base for 10 mins whilst the other 3 armies are trying to pummel you, and to make it that you dont get one person wiping out the opposition you could give all players invincible strongholds, fortresses etc. i think it could work, as nearly every 40k army has an army standard (you know the big ones that were made all those years ago and so on)

I dont think they will put tyranids instead just the Necrons and Tau but im looking forward to the new units for the existing races more than the new races. (hopfully they add in wraithgaurd) I also hope they make the game more true to the tabletop so dark reapers are as powerful as they should be and the imperals be able to deep-strike kaskrins

Deffinatly Nids, you could do so much more with them than the others

I also think it will be Tyranid or Dark Eldar because of the emphasis is close combat and the need for 'Bad guys' (Orks, Chaos, Tau) to balance out the 'good guys' (I.G., Space Marines, Eldar). I think it might be Dark Eldar over tyranids because they will be easier to translate to a RTS and they are not wholly dependant on CC which doesn't give as much eye candy and may not appeal to players who are not familiar with the Table top game.

Quality, I have, but haven't used in ages, a Tau army, this is gonna rule, also having owned Necrons I think that would be sweet as well, though the 'Nids would be good

SGM_Azrael

Tau is one race, thats fine but i hope they put in kroots. i would want tyranids cause there is really only one other close combat race (orks) and tyranids would be awsome, huge gaunt swarms and giant carnifexes. but i would think tht the other race would be necrons due to their apperance in WA, eh it could be worse like dark eldar. deamonhunters and which hunters should just be one army= Inquisition and they would kick ass... actually no separete they kick way too much ass. well hopefully that necron sighting is just a joke and they put in tyranids.

Hyken
Hyken

tyranids will be too tough to handle... plus they don't speak anything for acknowledgement/affirmation/query/etc.. I place my bets on Dark Eldar... the game will need someone on the side of Chaos to counter a possible IG-SM-Eldar alliance, and such a alliance is highly possible, given the general background of the story.

tyranids woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I reckon the other race will probably be Necron only due to the fact that the way Relic have been playing DoW is that give you glimpes (sp) of a possible expansion pack by showing some unplayable races, like in DoW the Imperials and for Winter Assault the Necrons; I also want it to be Necrons because their my Army of Choice in the Tabletop Game when i used to play, many years ago.

Sweet! I've yet to even play the original but I've been wanting it for a while. Nice to see a company adding more to games people love.

Hm. Given that the Tau are confirmed, I'd imagine that the other faction will be one that they will meet in the course of the campaign. Necrons are most likely, IMHO- yes, only one 'vehicle', but add Pariahs, Wraiths, Destroyers etc etc, and there's plenty of scope for a DOW race... Of course, it COULD be an Adeptus Mechanicus army... :P

they should bring back the legion of the damned as part of the ultra marines that would be a nice and very sick suprise.

tyranids definatly they need to make a quality space hulk game there was nothin better than having terminators goin head to head with nids in confined spaces.

i hate to say this but if you think harder than a three year old the expansion pretty much told you the other race is going to be necrons, which i is not as good as nids. nids would have been the best choice but as i said the expansion pretty much gave it away.

Consider: Daemonhunters are very much like Space Marines (they look about the same)- people will want *new* material Dark Eldar: same reason Witch Hunters: maybe... but they are still imperial Necrons: Most Likely; they just look to me to be the most likele candidate Tyranid: Again, maybe, but they tend to be too close-combat oriented; which may not translate well into DoW

DoW is a great game, and a total of 7 races now will increase the number of tactics able to be played out the roof.

I'll have to look into this more, seems like a great idea for an RTS.

I take it youve have not played the table top game much Damz, because any of those armies are viable for the next installment. I can halfway agree with your statement about daemonhunters, but you've obviously never played against Space Marines that come standard with stormbolters and power weapons. It's not pretty, against any army...I'm ready to see more daemons from the other dark Gods, ive had enough of horrors and the Bloodthirster(even though its an awesome sight to behold). I'm thinking the Nids, though I'm not sure where the comment about no upgrades for Necrons come from. And then there is the fact that the Nightbringer or the Deciever would be a relic worthy summon(not to mention hardcore). Necrons don't really need vehicles. And a mod is merely a mod. Even though there are some people that do it well, well enough to be designers themselves, Relic is going to do it themselves anyway. I'm curious if Kroot and this new "Vespid" will be included. Even then, Kroot can be called a race all by themselves. Though Brendan talked about existing races, this games comes out in the fall and one Inquisitorial force is still in the process of being redone, Ordo Xenos and the Deathwatch. Anyone who has ever used a Deathwatch Army effectively knows what a problem it would cause against Orcs, Eldar, and the one new race we know of, the Tau. And for the Emperor's sake Relic, give us a better army painter! More icons and more choices in what you can paint and how to paint it.

Well if their going to output great games that ill take it. It would be nice to get a break from sequels. Today weve heard from halo 3, The new voley ball game and the new far cry game, and this. (all sequels and i know its not a new far cry)

Necrons may not get upgrades, but it would be cool too see how their regeneration and "We Shall Return" abilities translate to the RTS. I mean you get an opponent taking out 15 of your Nec warriors only to have 10 of those downed 15 suddenly get back up and return to the fight. I think that would be a good way to compensate for their lack of upgrades. Then there's the Monolith. :)

Yes, Finally the TAU! I have a tabletop Tau army and I love their technology. The addition of the Imperial Gaurd was a welcomed one for winter assualt, I enjoyed playing them even more then the Eldar, my favorite from the orignial Dawn of War. I hope the other army is the Tyranids, they are great for swarm tactics, and work well into almost any storyline.

damz
damz

i highly doubt that the demonhunters will be the new race since only Chaos and Eldar have demons (eldar only have 1) which would make the army fairly pointless in demon hunting. I am hoping it would be dark eldar but their speed in tabletop would not be translated well into the game. It will most likely be necrons or tyranids, with the introduction of the tau making 4 shooty armies it will most likely be the tyranids to create a change in strategy. Also necrons would be fairly boring since their troops get no upgrades and have one vehicle (granted nids have 0 vehicles but they got huge monsters) Only problem i see is that the tau mod recently released for winter assualt is now fairly pointless since people can expect to play as them in the next expansion pack.

If people thought Zergs was a wholly original creation of Blizzard, they're seriously mistaken and I would really want to see how DoW can pull off a Tyranid swarm.

Yeah, Necrons or Tyranids please... I dont even have DoW yet but at this point it looks like Ill have to get it when the second expansion comes out. Im sure by then theyll have DoW packaged with Winter Assault....
