David Hayter joins The Long Dark

Cast for survival simulation game The Long Dark includes David Hayter.

Renowned video game voice actor David Hayter has joined the cast of adventure game The Long Dark, developer Hinterland has revealed.

The announcement was made on The Long Dark Kickstarter page and did not contain details as to what role he will be playing in the game. Hayter is best known for his contribution to the Metal Gear Solid series as the English voice of Solid Snake, but will not be reprising this role in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

Hinterland formed in September this year and is comprised of industry veterans whose experience stems from working at several big-name developers, including BioWare, Riot Games, Ubisoft Montreal, Sony Santa Monica, and id Software.

The studio's debut game, The Long Dark, is a survival simulation game set in an open world beset by a "quiet apocalypse". Hinterland will also integrate "morally challenging scenarios" into the game. At the time of writing, the game's Kickstarter page has 37 hours remaining before donations close.

The Long Dark is being developed for the PC and currently has no release date.

It'll be tough hearing David Hayter playing anything other than Solid Snake.

The studio's debut game, The Long Dark, is ANOTHER survival simulation game set in an open world beset by a "quiet apocalypse".

Fixed. Survival Simulation is the new fad to follow Roguelike it seems. And I know Roguelikes have a long history, I just mean there sure are a lot of indie studios throwing out a seemingyl endless amount of them at the moment, closely followed by survival sims. Bonus points if the game is a ZOMBIE Survival sim.

Game's goal which was reached is only $200k. Don't know how good a game this is going to look on that budget. Probably an XBLA/PSN downloadable title.

I'm surprised they could afford Hayter with a total budget this small.

The real snake will be back one day! I'm sure of it.

Can't wait for MGS5 with or without him.  This...not so much.  Kojima for life!

Wow, Hayter's really been forced to slum it lately. First Shadow of the Eternals and now this?

My favourite genre. But, I wish the game was designed to be on consoles, as well.

Yeah Davey! Show them that you don't need them.

The Long Dark is such a cool project. Everyone who cries for innovation in every game should back it at once. Hell, I did so right after seeing the gameplay and pitch vids.... :)

I've been watching a few of the videos on this game, and I'm sold.  This looks excellent.  I don't know how good the encounters will be - will they be dynamic, where flinching to pull the trigger could result in a new ally or your death (yay), or will they be more like I Am Alive, where everyone you encounter is bad and it's all just a matter of getting leverage so you can try and kill them without wasting bullets (nay) - but the idea sounds solid and the morality issues they bring up really intrigue me.  I LOVE morality plays, no matter the medium.

I swear, this is going to somehow connect to MGS V and Hayter is going to be snake all along. This is exactly the kind of crazy crap Kojima always pulls.

The Long Dark.... Night, Day? I'm assuming they couldn't call it "The Long Dark (K)Night" so they left out the end. lol

David Hayter is Batman then. Awesome! =)

No word on this being multiplayer, but a legit survival simulator sounds fun. There are very few of those and it's ripe for a good make of the game.

The Long Dark sounds like a porno.

This is off topic...

But I'm tired of "hunting" for the news on this new website UI.  I miss the old website!

Oh, and God forbid you forget to sign-in right away lest you want to get re-directed.

@hugoadan Sounds like a good chunk of their 200k odd goal is going to be spent on voice actors, leaving not too much for development. I don't mind playing puzzle games from indies, but if it's something serious, I want more production values and would rather play something that a lot more money went into. Let's just say I expect more from my money, unless it's going to be a $3 or 99 cent game.

@lostnI think they decided from the start that they wouldn't aim for a high level of graphics.  It looks like they've done what a lot of smaller budget games do, choose a cartoon-like (I don't know the proper terms here sorry) art style rather than attempt to have realistic looking graphics.  Personally I don't mind as long as the game really has all the deep simulation-y goodness :).

I'm not backing it though, I'm kinda done with Kickstarter I think.  It's easy to get caught up in that feeling of hey we're gonna help get this game made that publishers don't want, we're gonna bring back this classic or this genre, etc.  Later though, when I take a more practical look at it, especially when things don't go well or as expected, it's not so great.  I pay more for early access, and then don't even end up trying it, or sometimes it takes me forever to get around to playing the final, and so far many games have launched at the same price as I backed.  When I look at it from that perspective, it's usually been stupid of me to back things.

@lostn"The Long Dark is being developed for the PC" I guess you said XBLA/PSN as a way to measure its quality, because it currently isn't being released on those services. It doesn't even have a release date.

Hurvl

@DarkSaber2k Yeah, I thought of that as well. He'll hop onto anything it seems. At least this one was funded and will be released (if all goes well, you never know with kickstarters).

@dipdish If CDPR realizes the importance of consoles, you can count on other PC devs following suit.

@LordCrash88 I'll back it by buying it when it's a finished project, like someone who isn't a total sucker.

@lostn To me it sounds like a generic thing you hear from psychics, but then it's always "you will meet a tall, dark stranger" and not a long, dark one.

@PupilsDilated Change is tough, but I think everyone will get used to it. Tbh, it seems pretty intuitive once you get the hang of it. Everything has it's place and it's fairly easy to find each section, i.e. news is on the left hand side, main stories on the top, reviews on the bottom, etc. I agree, it was a bit jarring at first, but we'll all get used to it.

@WolfgarTheQuiet They needed an actor for motion capturing, not just a voice actor. David Hayter is a fantastic voice actor, but I don't think that he would be very good as a full actor.

When I learned one thing of Beyond Two Souls than it's that you can achieve so much more on an emotional level if you have good actors.

foxrock66
foxrock66

@WolfgarTheQuiet I agree. Now, I love Sutherland. Love. But not hearing Hayter will be jarring. Look at the most recent Splinter Cell. It's great. But every time Sam opens his mouth you're reminded that this isn't the same game you loved before.

freeden
freeden

@WolfgarTheQuiet A lot of people have said this, but people will get used to Sutherland's voice. After being Snakes voice for years, it was bound to change eventually. MGS5 will be worth it though.

@hystavito @lostn So they call it a survival simulation game, whatever that means. To me that sounds like horror, especially with a title like the Long Dark. I just don't know how scary or serious you'll take the game if it has cartoony or 16 bit graphics.

lostn
lostn

@Hurvl @lostn That's what I meant, yeah. When I say XBLA, I'm meaning the game will be a few hundred MBs in size, thanks to MS's limitations to tailor for people MS idiotically sold a console without a HDD to.

LordCrash88
LordCrash88

@JBStone1981 @LordCrash88 So I am a sucker because I backed it? Kickstarter is about making things a reality you would like to see. It's about your personal wishes and for the greater good. It's not a preorder option....

But I guess I'm just not egoistic enough to not spend money on kickstarter. Or maybe I'm just a sucker because I spend my money for things I see it's well invested...

@mathg04 @WolfgarTheQuiet I laughed when you said fantastic voice actor. Good one. He is an ok voice actor. He is extremely limited.

CaveManCobb
CaveManCobb

@mathg04 @CaveManCobb He has his normal David Hayter voice and then he has the Snake voice. He is very limited. A fantastic voice actor is someone who can do any role.

mathg04
mathg04

@CaveManCobbFor a game, he's afantastic voice actor, in my opinion. He fits the role perfectly, his voice changes in each of the 4 games with the character and all in all does a good job. I mean, compare it to other games, or worse to anime. Usually voice actors are pretty bad, if the media is not originally english.
