Darksiders II confirmed for Wii U launch

Vigil Games lead designer says action title will be available on day one for Nintendo's new console with system-specific features.

Gamers who pick up a Wii U this holiday season will be able to take home a copy of Darksiders II on the same today, developer Vigil Games has confirmed.

Death comes to the Wii U on launch day.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Darksiders II lead designer Hayden Dalton said the Wii U version is being developed alongside the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC iterations. Additionally, a "small team" is working to ensure that the Wii U version uses the system's tablet controller in a "unique way," according to the developer.

The Wii U version of Darksiders II will boast features exclusive to the system, though Dalton was not able to provide specific examples.

"It's basically the core game, but then with added abilities to do certain things that you can't do on the other consoles," he said. "We're not basically heavily changing the core game to support the control system, but the control system will be an enhancement of the core game."

Darksiders II was previously anticipated to launch alongside the Wii U. The Wii U is due out worldwide this holiday season, but Nintendo has not announced a specific release date. The company will share more information regarding the system at the 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo, where final Wii U hardware will be on hand.

The Xbox 360, PS3, and PC iterations of Darksiders II are due out on June 26. The game follows the horseman Death instead of the original game's protagonist, War, and it tells a parallel story to the original rather than continuing on from that title's conclusion. In the game, Death will attempt to clear War's "good" name (he's accused of starting the end of times ahead of time) and save humankind in the process.

@Sigil-otaku Nice link. The WiiU's controller isn't your everyday controller, it's a hybrid with a tablet. That's all fine and all but I'd much prefer a standard controller for a gaming console - obviously I know that's not possible though as the games are being made to suit. I agree with you to an extent about the vita, but then that's another point entirely.. The vita along with the 3DS are handheld consoles, not controllers for another console (although admittedly the vita can do both). As soon as I saw the plans for the WiiU I knew straight away that I wouldn't be buying one, the controller is massive and completely unpractical, not to mention the fact it will no doubt need constantly charging up.. in fact it might as well just be permanently plugged in :? Lets wait to see what happens to Nintendo.. It's either going to make them ridiculously rich or they're going to go bust. If it's the latter though I won't be surprised.

@Lordcrabfood The Wii U is a fancy ipad with buttons. There's still a proper console box that displays to your TV just like any other console.

@moviequest14 ummmm, does not change the face that the Wii U is just a fancy i pad, has nothing to do with what tech was first released.

@warhawk-geeby The new controller has normal buttons, it's just larger due to it having a screen in the centre so it incorporates standard controller style gameplay just like any other system and then more. I mean look how similar it looks to the Vita controls just with the analogues swapped with the buttons on position. http://kotaku.com/5810272/fun-facts-about-the-wii-u-controllers-size If that's not standard controller layout and a 'normal controller' then best throw these vita's in the bin too.

@warhawk-geeby Classic Controller Pro?

@spoonybard-hahs Oh yeah.. I forgot it was still supporting the wiimote... How about just a normal controller though? Is that too much to ask?

spoonybard-hahs

@warhawk-geeby That's okay, you won't have to. It still uses the goddamned nunchuck/wiimote. Assuming of course you don't buy this for whatever system you currently own. Like every other Wii U launch title.

Maybe so... But I don't want a tablet for a controller :?

Well, if Wii U costs more than 250$ I won't get one at the launch date anyway. Great game tough..

@armodillo17 I was just pointing to the fact the Japanese get all the good things and get the longest support for these consoles :P

Wii-U will be awesome because it will have all the good games plus their exclusives like Mario, zelda, Kirby and others

I'm looking forward on new wii-u. It's going to be awesome. Please don't over priced the system. I hope it's around 350 or less than I will definitely grab one.

armodillo17

@Atheno You're absolutely right about that. Sony definitely supports their consoles the longest. Not so sure about MS. Did they support the Xbox at all after the 360 came out? (I've never owned either, so I have no idea.) @Darnasian The Japanese launch of the Wii was actually a few weeks LATER than the US launch. At no point in 2005 was the Wii released anywhere. Feel free to verify. The only (major) market where the PS3 came out after the Wii was Europe. As for Japanese release dates: All of the Japanese release years are the same as the US except for the NES and SNES, which were 2 years and 1 year earlier. So in Japan, the life cycles have all been at least 6 years except for the N64, which was 5.

@BillyColeman Crytek is impressed with the WiiU specs. If that fact alone doesn't speak to how much power it has, I don't know what does.

@moviequest14 Dude no offense but you are off the subject...never said interrupting a console production is a crime...never said it's a bad thing...I just said I want my consoles to have a bigger life cycle... Never said a console quality is determined by life cycle...I said I prefer the longer ones... Why?...because I want the consoles I play have as much support over the years as they can... Now my question is...why the FK is everyone so messed up about pointing to facts?...

BillyColeman

still wont get the Wii U on day one need to make sure it has power first

@Lordcrabfood : Actually,I-pad is only a fancy ds,ds came out before even iphone did and was one of the first fully functional color-touch screen devices released to the public....especially since all we are going on here is the fact it has a touch screen....

moviequest14

@Darnasian : '' after a while SONY and MS released next gen consoles with better graphics...'' actually...this gen has been the first gen that has even barely been true.... 1. is that ps3 and wii released very closely together..Nintendo could've done better graphics but they chose not to..and really? Because almost every gen (excluding the current gen) Nintendo has been either in close second, tied,or leading the pack in graphics...there was never a real decision on whether gamecube or xbox had better graphics, and while it was almost a 50/50 thing 64 technically could produce more powerful graphics though it was seldom if ever done. So please tell me where you are getting this information of Nintendo always being behind in graphics....

moviequest14
moviequest14

@Darnasian : And production stopping is a horrible crime how? Gamecube has stopped production...but it still has a fantastic lineup with Wind Waker,Resident Evil 4 (and a host of other excellent Resident Evil titles),Mario Sunshine,Pikimin,Smash Bros. Melee,Mario Kart Double-Dash,Mortal Kombat,True Crime,Beyond Good & Evil,Billy Hatcher,Donkey Konga,Tales of Symphonia,Metroid Prime,Star Fox Adventures,Mgs:Twin Snakes,Soulcalibur II,Eternal Darkness,Sonic Heroes,Guns,Hitman 2,Viewtiful Joe,TimeSplitters etc. as did ps2 with many previously mentioned and the Ratchet & Clank,Jak & Dexter,GTA,and Killzone series included...hell,put me on a desert island with a gamecube and ps2 with full libraries and I could stay entertained for the rest of my life. The quality of a console isn't determined by the length of it's life...it is determined by what is done in the system life.

I will be getting this game as a Wii-U launch title depending on when the system launches. If it launches in September as rumored I might wait. If it launches in November then I will get it on my 360 and just get AC3 and whatever Nintendo is putting out on the Wii U like Pikmin 3 and whatever Retro is doing.

I'll probably wait to get the game until Wii U comes out.

@armodillo17 Also not that you were wrong in your post, but keep in mind that the PS1 was supported far after the PS2 came out, you could still buy it brand new. Same with PS2 and PS3, you can still buy PS2's brand new. So they are technically still supported.

@Darnasian Straight from Wikipedia: "The Wii is a home video game console released by Nintendo on November 19, 2006." The PS3 was released in Japan on Nov 11 and in the US on Nov 17, so they were practically released at the same time, but Nintendo was still technically last. And regarding the life cycles: in the US, Nintendo's consoles were released in 1985, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, and 2012; that's 6, 5, 5, 5, and 6 years. Sony's were released in 1995, 2000, and 2006. That's 5 and 6 years. MS's were released in 2001 and 2005. That's 4 years. Granted, the PS3 and 360 will both have cycles of at least 7 years, but that will be the first time that any major console ever will have a cycle longer than 6, so it's not like Nintendo has been putting them out way faster than everybody else.

@Darnasian Emphatic fellow aren't you? Regardless,I've always enjoyed Nintendo's consoles, and I have high hopes for the Wii U. P.S. The portion of my comment earlier about bashing wasn't really aimed at you.It was more toward people who are saying these games will be better on the current consoles,or that the Wii U will bomb even though they've never seen one in action.

zzamaro

it will still be better on xbox 360 :D

Darksiders 2 has just become an important launch title for Wii U. Because the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 versions will be the same. The Wii U version has to really show why that tablet controller second screen is useful and more important "adds" to Wii U version of Darksiders 2. I played Darksiders on PS3. Nintendo has to show how muliplatform games are "better" on Wii U.

Darnasian
Darnasian

@Wormkid_64 LOL... I didn't bash the Wii U...actually said I have high hopes for it...I just said the Nintendo's life cycle of consoles is too short for me and this is what dragged me away.... And NO! you are wrong...go and google it or search on gamespot...there was an article which was confirmed by Nintendo that they stopped the production of Wii and they are selling everything they have in stocks...you sure do imagine they have at least 1/2 million Wiis on stocks do you?

Wormkid_64
Wormkid_64

@Darnasian Stopped?Production of the Wii hasn't stopped. They sold over 200 thousand last month. I know that's not a sky high number, but the point is they're still selling.Of course, sales aren't the point of gaming.Fun is.I still have every Nintendo home console ever made, they all still work, and I still go back and play them. The life cycles of the systems are irrelevant. Of course I've got a 360 and a PS2 as well. For some reason,it seems people believe you can't play games by all three or any mix of the Big 3.You've got to pick one.But as @nate1222 said, there used to be a time when gamers in general were a group separate from non gamers who enjoyed their hobby. These days I think most non gamers have the idea that gamers are all teens to mid 40s guys hiding in basements, attached to headsets and arguing over which console "pwns" the others. The sad part is gamers are fueling that idea by acting like 5 year olds fighting over toy trucks. Anyway, folks need to stop bashing a system before it even shows up,and stop bashing the choices of other gamers. So someone likes the 360 and you don't,so they like the Wii U and you don't,so they like VIta and you don't. Get over it.That's life.

Darnasian
Darnasian

@armodillo17 The PS3 was released in 2006 and the Wii in 2005... The Wii is already dead because it's production has stopped and now it's on sold out state so they can eliminate the stocks... The PS3 still has life compared to it... Now tell me....how can you sustain your affirmation when it's clearly that it's not true? I understand your point but I've never been a Nintendo gamer just because their console life cycle is far too small...6 years until production stops?...are you kidding me?... Looking forward to the Wii U hoping it would get better....but remember....the GameCube had somewhere between 4 and 5 years of life and after that the Wii was released... Rushing never pays off if you know what I mean...

Looking forward to the Wii U. Everyone talking about "next-gen" graphics on here though is cracking me up. The 7XXX and 6XX series just came out from AMD and nVidia. So consoles will still be a generation behind PC.

It's the variety that games like this, plus Nintendo's usual in-house series, bring that gives me high hopes for the Wii U. Though the gaming industry is in decline, mostly due to console makers and publishers pushing the costs to extravagance, I think Nintendo will stay afloat through it all. I really do feel that the fanboys need to just eat it. There really once was a time when N64 and PS1 owners compared games and admired eachothers' differences instead of trying to feel "superior" via dissing matches. I really wish gamers would come back to that comradary. While I prize the DS and 3DS for their libraries of great games, I also applaud Sony for the PSN catalog. It capitalizes on Sony's amazing PS1 library for future hardware owners to enjoy. As long as Sony includes PSN downloadables on their hardware, they'll keep my interest.

King-gamer

It'll give Nintendo fans more reason to pickup a Wii U I guess.

FallenOneX
FallenOneX

Here's what kills me....... People have complained that the Wii U won't be more powerful than the PS3. A certain percentage of those same people like to boast that the PS3 hasn't even reached 100% potential yet...... If that's truly the case, then Nintendo would still win by sticking to it's 5 years console shelf life (and a new console/upgrade around 2017), and Sony would still win if they stuck to their 10 years shelf life of the PS3. The only people I see losing out on this are the fanboy gamers that have nothing better to do than bash a system they don't like for whatever reason.

It's encouraging to hear that NEW titles will launch with the Wii U, not just ports of old games like Darksiders 1. I hope those games come too but seeing big multi-platform developers crafting games for it out of the gate says a lot about it's long-term potential.

armodillo17
armodillo17

@Darnasian Nintendo has never released a next-gen console before MS or Sony. PS1 came out before N64, PS2 and Xbox both came out before GameCube, and Xbox 360 and PS3 both came out before the Wii. Nintendo has always been dead last. In fact, the Megadrive/Genesis came out before the SNES, too, so the last time that Nintendo was the first company to release a console in a given generation was... the NES.
