Dark Souls DLC on the way?

Report cites source "close to the project" saying new content for From Software RPG is due during the first quarter.

From Software's well-received role-playing game Dark Souls was released in October and went on to ship over 1.5 million units worldwide. Now, it appears the game is growing further still, in the form of downloadable content.

Rumor has it Dark Souls' world is set to grow further.

Electronic Gaming Monthly cites a source "close to the project," who says DLC for Dark Souls is currently being "finished up," with a targeted release date set for the first quarter of this year. Unfortunately, EGM's report does not offer any further details on the rumored forthcoming content.

A Namco Bandai representative told GameSpot, "Namco Bandai Games America does not comment on rumor or speculation."

Set in a sinister fantasy world, Dark Souls features a variety of outdoor areas that are seamlessly connected to one another. The game also features a distinctive approach to multiplayer, with various new tweaks allowing players to help or hinder each other's progression.

I'm excited for some more content, in particular what they added for the PC launch. Still reading up on what multiplayer changes they're making. I'd love to see a more standard co-op system, where you can actually invite somebody you know to join you rather than finding people's signs on the ground. I get really frustrated when it takes 5 minutes waiting to see the "summoning failed" message appear.

I hope in later games they allow for a more expansive mp experience as well, with full co-op areas rather than ending with a boss fight and sending the phantom home, and more balanced PvP that allows all play styles to be viable (heavy armor/tower shield gets demolished 99% of the time, and backstabs need a rework...).

vrgar, i have to disagree wih your views on DS's atmosphere, i feel it creates some environments which are comparible to GOW in terms of epic scale. However, i do agree thatsome boss fights were dissapointingly simple, even using melee. Regarding the DLC, FROM can do no wrong in my eyes, they seem truly passionate about producing REAL games, not just licking the industry purse............ Thank you guys you are now legends.

I agree with the atmosphere in Dark Souls, it could have been better, but I think the way From handled the lore makes the game really awesome. You begin the game with that single cutscene, and watch as the 4 lords destroy the dragons. The game builds itself up from that point, as the lords seem really mythic. You hear about Anor Londo, and the beautiful places, then when you actually reach them it seems like your character is up their among the lords. (spoilers) although when you actually fight them its a little disappointing, but still, the games gradual build-up from looking at these legendary figures to fighting them, is awesome. In a way its kinda like how the Pokemon games are, you go around the world defeating all these gym leaders (bosses) in preparation for the ultimate test; the elite four (four lords).

@williebazerka FROM SOFTWARE are of the rare devs left who still create games for fun and not for money. Get lost.

was a fun game, think it would be cool if they made it a true multiplayer, but I think they'd have to cut out graphics for that.

Dark souls is easily one of the top 5 best games i have ever played. Please make another game.

Please make another game. Demon and Dark Souls are two of the best games I've ever played.

This could be very promising, as much as I respected FROM for saying they released a 'complete game' and has no wish to add DLC, if this turns out to be true lets hope it's an answer to the all the praise this title has got since it hit the shelves. Personally, I'd love a new area, creatures, Bosses weapons etc.

@devastion913 Yeah some guy I was co-oping with in DS bugged me into using the duplication glitch to level up and keep helping him, but it's like you said, the fun just went right out of the game. Still made 3 more chars afterward though, all honestly I actually haven't platinumed DkS yet, mainly because of my OCDish insistence on grabbing the trophies (yeh ps3 here too) with the 'right' character. That and reeeaallly not wanting to waste one of those slabs on a crystal weapon. You're right about the bosses though, they really felt original and varied (and sometimes downright terrifying) in DS. Not to say that they weren't good in DkS (though I did get a little tired of the 'demon' bosses), but I never got that same sinking adrenaline of finally busting through the depths of the altar of storms only to have Old Hero jump off the roof and start stalking me for all my precious precious souls

devastion913
devastion913

@kohle36 I liked the level design in Demon's better too. Dark seems to have alot of back tracking and being able to transport between the archstones was very nice. In Dark Souls I like the variance in environments, although some are still somewhat recycles from Demon's, and I like some of the new weapons and armors. The lastest patch for Dark is nice and I'm unaware of any more glitches that exploit souls or items so the multiplayer is on a better playing field than when I started playing at launch. If there is a new one, don't tell me about it. I spent over 100 hours on my first charachter then I learned of the dragon mask glitch and just went for trophies (PS3 player) but the game lost all fun after using the glitch, granted it wasen't as bad as the Stockpile Holmes glitch, but it was still game breaking. I sum it up like this Demon's Souls: Awesome World Tendency/Charachter Tendency system with better bosses (my opinion). Dark Souls: Larger, more colorfull (!) world to explore and more PvP options, although minus any boss such as the dreaded Old Monk. Also, you don't have to wear the cling ring constantly if not in human form (unless your one of those archers)!

@foxfacer2d2 new game plus man. You're missing out. Or try out a different class / playstyle: there are so many stat requirements you can't possibly have tried everything out in a single playthrough. And then there's pvp...(which I am terrible at and yet keep coming back to, like some sort of abused lover)

kohle36
kohle36

@devastion913 I'm still divided. World tendency was much better I agree, liked the upgrade paths better in DS (how you could turn any weapon tearing, fatal or merc, to say nothing of blessed and crescent), I prefer luck to resistance (lol) and there was something about the level design that I found more compelling in DS. That said... the covenant system is a pretty awesome multiplayer innovation on the original. Hmmm, just spent a few minutes trying to come up with something else, but nothing. Oh well, Demons Souls ftw

devastion913
devastion913

I still like Demon's Soul's better. I thought the world tendency system was a much more interesting mechanic than humanity.

hahaha williebazerka you make me laugh. You think that they are making a dlc to increase sales hell no i think their main reason to make a dlc is to satisfy their fans who absoultly love this game like me and as well give as a little something to play with while they make the next one sooooooooooooo stfu

It only shipped 1.5 million that's why they need to sell dlc.

after finishing dark souls, you should prepare your character to challenge with other players in online battles, so dark souls never ends if you wish to play more, and more and more you find yourself playing it without tiring of it

DLC?? From Software?? Dark Souls?!?! That doesn't seem right... One of the reasons I like Demon's/Dark Souls is because it comes as a complete package, no bull***t like Gears3 or MW3 or Arkham City. Namco also didn't confirm anything, so for now, I call Bull***t.

I'd love it if they did a Ninja Gaiden Black style overhaul and added new weapons and enemies to the game. Of course, new areas would be awesome, too.

I was planning to pick this one up once I had enough spare time to game for long sessions. Now, I'll wait for some GOTY edition with all DLC.

Any reason to play this game is great for me. Even if FS said they would not release any DLC... who cares.. for better or worse is worth the chance... this game is amazing...

@Gelugon_baat Its just one of those "would be nice" hopes,TBH,before the PC version talk started,I would never expect the possibility of that port. If it happens, great,I have one more nice game to play,if it doesn't,no problem...

@DreamorDie You put my thoughts on the two all together right there. I LOVE both games, but Dark Souls atmosphere was lacking compared to Demons' Souls in my opinion.

DreamorDie
DreamorDie

I welcome DLC with open arms, however, I don't like how FS is being a bit hypocritical saying how the game doesn't need DLC because it is perfect. I wish they wouldn't have lied to us >.>. Nonetheless, looking forward to it, IMO Dark Souls' areas don't have the same resonance or impact as the areas of Demon's Souls, so I'm hoping they create a new area to truly reinvigorate that feeling of the majestic Boletaria, the depraved Stonefang, the chilling Latria, the solemn & desolate Shrine of Storms, the ominous Valley of Defilement or better yet an entirely new sense of awe altogether! Golly, I hope this rumour is true! :3

They could've mistaken a superb Patch as DLC.

The broken Archestone in Demon's Souls was a golden opportunity to shake me down for another $10. I would have paid it without a second thought. While it's a little less obvious what they could do with Dark Souls, I'm no less willing to pay for additional content.

MEDzZ3RO
MEDzZ3RO

I like the idea of DLC if it sticks to the fundamentals of the game, you could easily expand from the Valley Of Drakes or something. I'm only on my second play through around 115 hours but I'm hoping to have my third done soon to get the platinum trophy. After that I won't really have much reason to keep playing long term, DLC would change that.

lmaocarrots

Does not seem like the type of game that'd have DLC, it seems like a complete experience as is. But I guess it'd never hurt to expand on this masterpiece.
