Dark Souls 2 DLC Coming This Summer as a Trilogy

Three downloadable content packs will be released for the game, starting with Crown of the Sunken King in July.

Dark Souls II will expand this summer with the release of three new DLC chapters, collectively called the The Lost Crowns trilogy, Bandai Namco announced today.

The first of these, Crown of the Sunken King, will launch on July 22 in the Americas. It's the only one Bandai Namco and developer From Software are sharing specifics about right now. It tasks players with recovering King Vendrick's crowns and offers "an entirely different world within the Dark Souls II universe, where stepped pyramids span a vast underground cavern."

The second DLC, Crown of the Old Iron King, will follow on August 26. The final chapter of the trilogy, Crown of the Ivory King, will land on September 24.

All of the DLC will be released on the game's three platforms: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. They are said to each contain "entirely original areas" filled with "unknown enemies" and bosses, and will be priced at $10 a piece. Alternatively, a season pass will be available for $25 that entitles buyers to the full trilogy at a $5 discount, but for whatever reason it will only be available to PC players.

From Software producer Takeshi Miyazoe had previously claimed there were no plans for Dark Souls II DLC because the developer wanted to "deliver a full game, the full experience, to fans who purchase the package from day one." Reports later suggested that DLC was, in fact, in the works, and soon after Miyazoe began talking about the potential of releasing new content for the game. "There is definitely potential, I think," he told OXM in January. "Again, it's all about fan feedback. Right now we are concentrating on completing what we've got, but I think there are next steps on how we can expand on Dark Souls II."

Dark Souls II was released on Xbox 360 and PS3 this past March, followed by a PC release in April. It was very well received by critics--earning a 9.0 in GameSpot's review--and had shipped 1.2 million units within three weeks of release. If nothing else, this new DLC should ensure it takes players at least a little bit longer than 20 minutes to finish.

Are you happy to see new Dark Souls content coming so much sooner than we could have hoped to see a sequel, or would you have preferred From left the game as-is? Let us know in the comments.

I just hope they have a "Getto Fabulous" Crown that makes you look like you have a huge afro!  Bell-bottoms +10, Nylon Disco Shirt +10, and a +10 Lightning Afro Pick Catalyst!  Then a badass new Michael Jackson gesture...woo hoo!

Releasing this in 3 parts is a terrible idea.  Waiting a month between each chapter is going to be brutal because each chapter is going to seem awfully short.  The 3 chapters together are only equal to 1.5 times the size of the Artorias Of The Abyss DLC.  Which means it will probably only take an hour or 2 to finish each chapter.  Idk how I feel about this yet.

Fromsoft lies. How is the game 'full' if we have DLC now? There is always a balance There is creativity; making something for the love of making something that other's will also enjoy. Then there is just...making money. I guess that I know which side of the balance Fromsoft is leaning towards now.

I'm a massive Souls fan, so I want this DLC badly. Anyone have a time machine I can borrow?

This is easily the best game I have played all year so far, and is a strong contender for GOTY. More DS2 is not a bad thing in my opinion. My question is, the first DLC tasks you with finding Vendricks crown...but didn't you obtain his crown when you claimed the king's armor?

I remember them saying "No DLC".

  • Crown of the Sunken King - July 22, 2014[2]
Crown of the Sunken King sends players on a quest to reclaim the Crown that King Vendrick once owned. With entirely new areas to explore within the Dark Souls II universe, players will find pyramids, underground caverns and unknown foes. It is said that the Ancient crown is buried deep below the surface, but it surely cannot sit unguarded.”
  • Crown of the Old Iron King - August 26, 2014
Crown of the Old Iron King is set in a massive tower engulfed by black mist where flames, smoke and sorcery lurk. Retrieve the crown of the Old Iron King, navigate paths that are not what they appear to be.”
  • Crown of the Ivory King - September 24, 2014
Crown of the Ivory King is set in an ancient temple wrung with freezing storms, towering walls and a hollowing emptiness. Challenged by forces that are one with the freezing elements, low visibility and esoteric abilities.”

DLC, buggy PC port and graphic downgrade... What game am I talking about? Hint: It´s not Watch Dogs

i have mixed feelings about this... i'd like to get more content for this game, but i don't like the fact that the game i bought is now not the complete experience, and that there will be some GOTY edition that will eventually be the definitive version. as a fan, i kinda feel like i have to buy it again...

Releasing this season pack so close to summer means unlikely to get a discount this summer's steam sales right? Maybe i'll just wait until nearing first DLC release on July before purchasing it in the incredibly slim chance the company considers a sale at that time. I really like this game.

3 separate DLCs which will likely amount to a legit expansion for $30…..is it July yet?

If you come here and bitch about DLCs and devs' greed for money, but then you want the DLC content of this game, go look in the mirror and see a hypocrite.

Praise the sun! As long as the keep making quality content and I will pay them. Very excited, I needed something to play until September when Dragon Age and  LOTR.

oh well, lets all hope they explain stuff, i still dont freaking know what the fu c k vendrick stole from the giants, and from the names of those dlc, it might tell a little bit about the Iron King too, anyone has any ideias as who the Ivory King is?i am thinking jeremiah but that dude has no mention in the game

3 separate DLCs? is this a joke? One of the few respectable dev companies now possibly turning into the same scum in the gaming industry?

@push88 its 14 GB of data lol in total so how is it going to be mabye two hours? you dont know the difficulty. why dont you just wait for it to come out & see reviews. instead of just judging it. you havent played it & you arent behind the scenes so all you have is a wrong opinion

blukirk
blukirk

@snessnes lol they still made a ton of money. so no one cares if you didnt buy it. thats your loss lol have fun with skyrim

@ahoora  Are you five years old?  You understand that video games are a business right?  The people who make these games have mortgages and car payments and kids who need braces....etc.  If you can't afford to buy video games, you might want to think of a new hobby...like birdwatching.  Grow up.

blukirk
blukirk

@ahoora what do you mean? a game can have extra things created after? how can you say DS 2 wasnt a full game. the 3 DLCs is a total of 14 GB?!!!! that would be ridiculous to add to an already extensive game. i swear you ppl complain just to complain. already whinny & it hasnt even came out. smh

ibewinnerz

@EXxile He had more than one crown, that's just a crown he had made with his armor but the true badass crown was lost probably

@RC-Sev I remember them saying it depended on how well the game did

jhcho2

@RC-Sev

They never said that. They only said that no DLC was planned during the development of the game, but it all boils down to reception.

@groowagon .... then dont buy the DLC haha like really? thats why its DLC, you can choose to buy it or nah.

93ChevyNut
93ChevyNut

@groowagon I agree.  I've been holding off on DS2 because I'm trying to get through an enormous backlog.  This announcement is frustrating because I know the smart money is to wait until the GOTY edition, but that means I'll have to wait that much longer to play the game.  First world problems....

@Sohaim Looks like he is dead and not rotten which means Freya is not Seath!!!!!!

@Sohaim

It might have something to do with the Gyrm Warriors, or those Elephant dudes everywhere. I'm hedging my bets on the Elephant guys, because, ya know, Ivory....

@iamahamsandwich

Yeah, I had pretty much the same reaction.  On the one hand, yay for more Souls content.  On the other hand, I can't help but feel that From Software is joining the ranks of the "ordinary" developers who exploit their players with this kind of DLC.  $30 is half again the price of the original game.  Who wants to bet it won't add up to be half again as much content?

Artorias of the Abyss for the first game felt different in that there was such a long delay between it and the original game -- about a year's difference.  So it was pretty clear that they weren't nickel-and-diming us just to nickel-and-dime us.  In comparison, this feels skeezy.  Three different ones?  And after only three months?

@ibewinnerz @EXxile Maybe its a about Heide? As it states in the official guide "These are the remnants of a lost civilization  which sank into the the sea so long ago" Possibly its about exploring under heides tower of flame, to discover the fate of a long lost king, and his crown.

#SunkenKingCrownIsAboutHeide

@wexorian @dani3po Many people had problems to start the game, look at the Steam forums. And yes there was a obvious downgrade from the videos prior to release to the final game.

EXxile

@93ChevyNut @groowagon I say just buy the game now. No guarantees there will be a GOTY edition, and the game was already GOTY material without the DLC. Your money will be well spent either way.

@Deadlysyns87 @Sohaim Duke is not freya , pale beast "seath" what ornifex told us. that spider was  just one of duke's experiments,

blukirk

@AtheistPreacher @iamahamsandwich once again its 14 GB in total. so 30$ is worth it in spades. especially since call of duty charges 15$ just for 4 maps & not even a quarter of data. its so big they want to give it out & give ppl time to beat it. its 10$ each. actually its pretty smart, you are spending 10 every month.  why are you even complaining? its 10 fucking dollars?! even if it wasnt that big. ONCE AGAIN ITS TENNNNN DOLLARS for more of a game you love. i swear now a days ppl complain just for the fun of it.

ibewinnerz
ibewinnerz

@AtheistPreacher @iamahamsandwich If you did your research though, you'd see that much of the content in Artorias of the Abyss was in fact cut from the original game and released later so they could get the game out quicker and get more cash in the process.  This is just being announced sooner than AotA was. $30 is a BS price tho unless they give 50% the content of the original game (but it seems like just one new area per part)

ibewinnerz
ibewinnerz

@shingui5 @wexorian @Deadlysyns87 @Sohaim no that's just a regular ancient dragon if you go back with the ashen mist heart you can go into its memory and get its soul seath is inhabiting the Duke (Lord Tseldora) and Freja is just "the Writhing Ruin's keeper"
