The first game officially announced as being in development for the current generation of consoles is nearly here. Digital Extremes' Dark Sector, originally revealed in April of 2004, finally has a retail release date.

D3Publisher of America today announced that it will be shipping Dark Sector to North American retailers on January 22. Built on the custom-made Evolution Engine, the third-person shooter attempts to immerse the player in a cinematic experience, forgoing things like a heads-up display to keep distractions at a minimum.

Dark Sector drops players into the role of a secret agent trying to unearth Cold War secrets in Eastern Europe. Along the way, the agent finds himself infected with a "technocyte virus" that grants him powers like the ability to grow a bladed disc weapon from his arm, but also threatens to take over his body entirely.
