D&D Online rolls dice in Japan

Turbine teams up with Sakura Internet to launch MMORPG across the Pacific; Asian-themed content added.

Bad Godzilla jokes aside, Japan has been invaded by Dungeons & Dragons today. Developer Turbine and Sakara Internet today announced that Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach has launched in Japan. The game is the first massively multiplayer online role-playing game using the D&D license, and was released in North America February 28. Stormreach was localized for Japan by both Sakara and Turbine, and features "Asian-themed armor, weapons, and content." The game is published in North America by Atari.

The MMO market seems to have the greatest risk vs. reward. And I agree, given that DDO hasn't done all that hot here, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to take an American game and export it to a Gaijin-wary Japanese audience.

I played DDO for a few weeks after launch. It hasn't been doing too well. If most American DnD fans don't want to play this game, I don't see why Japanese gamers will.

I know plenty of Japanese who already are playing this game, the NA/EU versions.

Hahaha, what a mistaka to make-a. Its not going to do very well if you load it with asian themed stuff. Theyre all into the european themed stuff in much the same way we into the oriental stuff. Dunno if DnD is that popular over there though, i know MTG is, but DnD, not so sure.

I give it 6 months before they close up shop.

I could be wrong, but D&D (indeed, pen and paper role-playing games in general) isn't popular there, is it? Well, best of luck to them.

What, it'll get 0.1 percent closer to WoW in marketshare now...

honestly I doubt they will be very successful there with most of the Japanese playing console games..

Umm, asian themed armor? It was my understanding that most of the fans in Asia are more into European style settings. Oh well, still sounds kind of lame.

I wonder if any of the "Asian-themed armor, weapons, and content." will be from the Orentil adventures sorce book?
