Dan the Automator posts up NBA 2K7 tunes

Tribe Called Quest to reunite for 2K Sports Bounce Tour; game soundtrack put together by producer of Gorillaz includes Hieroglyphics, Mos Def, Fabolous.

"Coach sat me down from the ball team/Cause I was breakin n***** on the inseams."

A Tribe Called Quest's Phife Dawg recited that rhyme about his basketball skills on 1993's "8 Million Stories," and basketball--specifically 2K Sports' NBA 2K7 video game and its hip-hop soundtrack--is the impetus for a long-rumored Tribe reunion.

Dan the Automator...loungin'.

Phife, Q-Tip, and Ali Shaheed Muhammed, the pioneering rap trio at the center of the Native Tongues conscious hip-hop movement of the early 1990s, are set to play a reunion tour to promote the release of the game and its hip-hop-centric soundtrack, helmed by acclaimed producer Dan "the Automator" Nakamura. Nakamura is probably best known for being part of supergroups the Gorillaz, Deltron 3030, and Handsome Boy Modeling School.

The 12-song soundtrack doesn't contain any new Tribe material, but it does include an Automator remix of Tribe's "Lyrics to Go" from 1993's Midnight Marauders. The record also boasts new material from Wu-Tang's Ghostface Killah, Mos Def, E-40, Jurassic 5's Chali 2na, Slim Thug, Fabolous, and the Hieroglyphics crew, among others.

The soundtrack will hit stores as a stand-alone CD and a digital download in mid-September. The game will be available for the Xbox 360, Xbox, and PlayStation 2 this fall. A PlayStation 3 version is also in development.

In addition to the hip-hop soundtrack, the game will also feature some hip-hop all-stars as playable characters in the game, many of which were also playable in 2K Sports' NBA 2K6. Phife, Flavor Flav, Common, the Roots' ?uestlove, Slim Thug, Aceyalone, Aesop Rock, and Rakaa of Dilated Peoples will all be able to throw down in NBA 2K7.

Deltron3030 is one of my favorite albums ever. "Del, you're looking like a ghost in the shell." So many geeky, nerdy, smart, wordy, crazy, funky, lyrics in those songs. Love it, I can't wait to hear some samples.

Great lineup, but would be perfect with the addition of a few other notables like The Pharcyde, Masta Ace, Jean Grae, Camp Lo and The Roots. Yeah...that would be soundtrack perfection.

I was more than satisfied with NBA 2K6's soundtrack, and 2K7's looks even better. Too bad I won't get 2K7 at release. I'll wait for a price drop.

now lets hope most of these songs actually turn out well, I remember last years soundtrack wasn't too good, even with all the artists it had.

Interesting... Dan the Automator hasn't been seen a whole lot since "White People". Glad to see that a popular sports franchise actually chose good underground hip hop such as Quest, Heiro, and Ghostface. Besides Fabolous and whatnot, I'm impressed. Now to see if the actual GAME is worth it...

Aside from Slim Thug that's one of the best Hip Hop soundtracks in a game ever.

Who cares about the music? Give us next gen versions that actually look better than current gen ones.

Ghostface Killah, Hiero, Dan, and Tribe. Nice.

Thats because underground hip-hop is real hip-hop. If you want to listen to puff daddy or some pop-hop crap go watch MTV with the other middle schoolers.

Too much underground hip-hop, not enough of anything else. There is great music in other genres as well. Why should you be paddling up a river when you can be sailing on an ocean, I say. Then again the choice of music is probably affected by the tour.

Omg I'm so pumped thats insane Tribe Called Quest reuninting is enough reason alone for me to buy the game, lol. Anyway yeah those artists are awesome, they are some of my favorite and the music they create is smart and also very chill. I think their sound captures the essence of basketball culture the best, and the soundtrack should have a very nice flow.

I'm a big, big fan of the game series and Automator's work. Finally a soundtrack worth listening to without having to shut down a few tracks.

This tracklist is huge. 2K's put together a great lineup of MC's...true lyricists. I hope the production's tight throughout. This may be the first video game soundtrack I ever buy.

"meischris39 DIsappointed, there isn't a lot of tracks, aswell as variety, and the artists arent that famous" Give me quality over quantity any day, and as for not that famous, you're looking at a who's who of the best rappers in the world IMO. It doesn't get any better than that lineup - except maybe if Prince Paul was co-producing with Dan the Automator.

Lupe Fiasco. E40. Mos Def. Jurassic 5. Slim Thug. Fabolous. Rhyme Fest. Tribe is a classic group. Man this is a pretty good lineup. I'm looking foward to this game even more. I remember Aceyalone from 2K6.

It's really cool that they've got hip-hop that's actually good. Tribe are legends, and they're not the only ones up there. Also, to anybody who's interested, I strongly encourage you to check out other things that Dan The Automator has been involved in; he's a pretty amazing producer, and he's worked with a lot of the best underground acts of the last ten years or so.
