Dan Houser on Bully sequel -- "I know I want to"

Rockstar Games cofounder says "there's a lot of directions I could go with that one."

by

Rockstar Games cofounder Dan Houser is interested in making a sequel to 2006 action game Bully, telling Polygon in a new interview that he has numerous ideas for this potential game.

"I know I want to," Houser said about the potential for making a second Bully game. "Well, hopefully, you never know. There's a lot of directions I could go with that one, it's funny."

An idea some have suggested to Houser, he explained, is for Rockstar Games to make a future Grand Theft Auto game with a grown-up Bully protagonist Jimmy Hopkins as the lead. This probably won't happen, Houser said.

"I never saw him as being that level of degenerate," Houser said. "I saw him as a bad teen, because he comes from a tough home, who could go either direction. He's not going to be a carjacker. He's too white collar for that already. He's at a sh** private school, but he's going to end up being really happy because he's at the worst bit of his life, or being a sort of messed up white collar doofus."

"He was an unpleasant soul, but he had a heart. To some extent you could say the same was true of [Grand Theft Auto IV's] Niko in a bizarre way," he added. "But [Jimmy's] not trying to burn down the school, he's more trying to stand up to injustice."

Rockstar Games parent company Take-Two filed a new Bully trademark in July.

In November 2011, Houser explained that after the original Bully shipped, it was decided that Rockstar Vancouver--the lead developer behind Bully--would work on Max Payne 3 instead of a sequel to the open-world game.

"So we knew that we didn't want to start doing the Bully sequel instantly at that second with those guys--even though it is a property that, like [Max Payne], we adore and might come back to in the future," Houser said at the time. "There was just no impetus to do that then. So we said, 'You can do Max, and then we will see what we can do with Bully.'"

If the Bully franchise is to return, it could be one of the multiple next-generation games Take-Two currently has in development. In May, CEO Strauss Zelnick said, "We also have a extraordinary pipeline of titles in development for next-generation platforms, including groundbreaking new intellectual property and releases from our proven franchises."

Bully was fun and an excellent game that me and one of my friend will never forget.

We laughed alot when we played it in 2006. The soundtracks were memorable. If bully 2 happens I will be waiting for my copy on day 1. For sure.

One of the most underrated Rockstar titles EVER ! BULLY is one of a kind. I highly recommend it to those who never played it before. Bully 2 should happen.

A new game like Bully or a Bully sequel would be great.

I played it on PS2 when it was called Canis Canem Edit and loved it. Then I saw it in a Rockstar sale a few weeks ago and so I bought it again.

I still loved it!

Here's hoping that they do actually make a new version of that? I'd buy it with no second glance.

While I enjoyed Bully for a bit, i REALLY REALLY hope they go with either a new IP or another RDR type of game next, or even something different.

Rockstar knows how to make good games and with their open world style they could make so many great games set in different times and periods.

Personally I'd LOVE to see them take on a futurstic dsytopian city scape. Complete with flying vehicles, hoverboards, jetpacks.

Just think of like Blade Runner meets Back to the Future meets fifth Element.

I need to beat this too. Great game and I really liked that they had different seasons and holidays portrayed. Still, as someone mentioned, it did feel a bit 'simple'. I hope they do a sequel. I like the fact that it's just mischief and not full out thuggery.

Even if it was a good game it wouldn't sell well methinks. Neither would Manhunt.

I wasn't too crazy about Bully.  It felt too small and confined, and a lot of the mechanics that made it different from GTA felt too basic.  Overall it was a decent game and I had fun with it but it felt like a regression.  Had Bully come out first before any of the PS2 GTA games, it would've been a lot different.

I can't imagine how a new bully would work, but that is a good thing.

Hmm. I still need to beat the game. :o

>A "Bully" sequel
>Not a "Manhunt" sequel

Come on Rockstar, revive a game actually worth reviving. You had the balls to make a torture scene in GTA V (albeit a bit "ham handed" in its delivery"), and you fully admit to your love of the stealth genre, so why not combine the 2? Not like you don't have enough money to take the risk in making a Manhunt 3. All I ask is that you don't censor it, or if you absolutely must (like Manhunt 2) at least leave the coding open ended so we can disable the censoring (thank god for Manhunt 2 on PSP. Yay for being able to remove that grainy over lay image and seeing all the executions in all their bloody goodness).

People were offended with the first Manhunt, and that was back before the almost photo realistic graphics we have now. Imagine how awesome the gore effects/executions would look by today's standards. If any company has the balls to pull it off, it's you Rockstar.

I would love a new bully! Specially if it's set in a new school with a whole new cast of characters.

I still remember playing Bully on my PS2 years ago. I've been waiting ever since that day for Bully 2. This is pretty much confirmation that Bully 2 is a thing, so I'm happy :D

I remember playing this game on my PC. It was fun. But I can't say that many gamers heard about it.

If enough people make enough noise, Bully 2 will happen.  It's not like they need a Kickstarter for this, with all that dough from GTA V.

I'd like to see R* do something totally new. We've had Old West, Modern, and childhood ultra-violence.

How about some sci-fi?

It's like stand-up comedians, talking shit about others is the easiest way to be famous.

Focusing on controversial topics and violence is the easiest way to sell games.

Mr. Houser please just make an Undead mode for GTA V and I'll be happy

@starjay009

Agreed.

Bully is the best game RockStar has made so far, in my opinion.

I was never into the whole GTA thing, because of the way it was always trying to be all "shocking" and whatnot. It never really appealed to me.

I remember the press was trying to make Bully out to be all violent and edgy or whatever, but it was actually the most innocent game about childhood you could ask for.

I found the irony hilarious.

@Stiler This is what I've always been hoping for. Although just for future reference, you shouldn't mention so many awesome things in one comment, you'll make people's heads explode. =)

But the other day I was playing GTA V and I just thought to myself that it'd be sooooo cool to have like a Blade Runner / Star Wars -like open world game.

@LiquidOcelot145 "Please Rockstar, make a game with unnecessary amounts of blood and gore so I can kill stuff that look like they die in pain while I kill stuff. Cause that's more important than making a sequel to a well-received game. Obviously, the amount of shock you induced into society through your gory executions made the game a top priority to revive. Let's not talk about mechanics. Let's just talk about the stuff dying. Yea, killing! FK YEA!"

No, that would just be goofy and stupid. Rockstars games usually work when they are grounded in realism, that is a realistic setting.

@Prats1993 You do know there is a hidden alien space ship in GTA V right?

Iddhi

@Prats1993 It's only your imagination that makes it goofy and stupid.

Somewhere on Planet Earth set 50 years in the future with Rockstar's vision of how things might be then, could be an amazing setting IMO.
