Crytek: "We Are Not 100% Happy With Xbox One Sales"

CEO Cevat Yerli also says Ryse 2--for Xbox or PlayStation--might be considered if current-gen sales improve.

Amid the recent reports of financial troubles at Crytek was the suggestion that a sequel to Xbox One launch title Ryse: Son of Rome had been canceled. This is not necessarily true, according to CEO Cevat Yerli, who says in a new interview that Crytek is waiting until more current-generation consoles are sold before it might start talking about Ryse 2.

"We have a good relationship with Microsoft. We are constantly looking at what we can do together," Yerli told Eurogamer in his first interview since the tough times at Crytek came to light last month. "We are not 100 percent happy with Xbox One sales right now. So we want to wait till the current-gen and next-gen catches up. For Ryse 2, we aren't saying it's cancelled. It's our IP. It just has to wait for the right timing. And the right timing means higher installed base across next-gen."

The Xbox One launched in November 2013 and sold more than 3 million units before the end of the year. Microsoft has not shared a new sales update since, but we know the console has shipped more than 5 million systems overall.

Yerli also said that Microsoft does not have the rights for Ryse 2, meaning the game could be released on the PlayStation 4, potentially. "We can do whatever we want with it with whoever we want," Yerli said.

Though Ryse: Son of Rome did not get the best reviews, Yerli said he has received "a lot of positive feedback" about the game. What's keeping Crytek from seeking a publishing deal for the game right now is "focus and attention," he said. "We're considering it. But at this point there is nothing official I can talk about."

Yerli also addressed two other well-known Crytek franchises: TimeSplitters and Crysis. He said he personally loves the TimeSplitters series, and there could be a "good chance of something" in the future," but he tempered those comments by adding, "at this point we don't have any plans with [Timesplitters] because we are focused on our development and operation of our current projects" like Warface, Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age, Arena of Fate, and a PC version of Ryse: Son of Rome. "We will figure out something definitely for TimeSplitters, but the time has not come yet," he said.

Regarding Crysis, Yerli said the franchise is "dear" to him, but again, he explained that Crytek is going to focus on its current projects before it branches out and potentially revives the series. "We will definitely consider looking at it," he said. The most recent Crysis game was 2013's Crysis 3. Asked directly if Crysis 4 was in development right now, Yerli said, "Don't know. Just saying, no comment. We're just focusing. That's what I'm saying."

Finally, Eurogamer's interview with Yerli goes into depth about the company's recent "transformation," which saw it downsize and sell the Homefront series to Deep Silver. "That transformation was painful. We paid the price," he said. "Now we come out of it much stronger. I hope people will see through our games these are not just empty words."

let me fight against the Romans and ill consider it.....after watching sparticus on stars ill never play as a wife raping wife enslaving & wife killing roman.....

the entire roman history (told by romans) is nothing but fabrication from start to finish....they never defeated vast powerful armies they massacred a bunch of peasant farmers and then told tall tales of these power armies that never existed.....

never mind the fact this entire game is nothing but botton mashing QTE

I enjoyed Ryse thoroughly--hell, I played it last Sunday.

For any company that doesn't have some kind of lucrative side deal going on with either Microsoft or Sony, it makes no sense to cut yourself off from a potential market. And, in the case of a Ryse 2, it would really be dumb to cut yourself off from the customers of the console that is selling the most.

and no ones happy with crytek. maybe if you made a decent Fn* exclusive you wouldnt be in this position

The second xbone and ps4 hit the store shelves they became current gen. As for Crytek, just ditch Warface, it's terrible free-to-play but pay-to-win and looks like crap, seriously YOUR CryEngine looks amazing without any adjustments and somehow Warface looks only slightly better than Call of Duty 4.

Ryse does not make me want to buy an Xbox One.

A average review whether it be from Gamespot or IGN does not dictate how good or bad a game is, you need to play it for yourself and decide.

For those who own a Playstation 4 console only go and jerk off with those tons of many "exclusives" that Sony have as you could have never played Ryse (you missed out, beautiful graphics decent gameplay), you know, from someone who has actually played the game.

I really enjoyed Ryse. It's not the game that sold me on the XB1, but a good game never the less. I enjoyed the story and the gameplay was pretty fun. All you need is one playthrough though. It's a good rental or play>trade-in

Dear Crytek your game didn't live up to sales expectations because it sucked. Nough said.

Pssst - it's not the console, it's your game!

Seeing as the game didn't even turn a profit for you Crytec how can your happiness be anything but zero.  Too bad you had to be the lab rat and show the rest of the devs that, unless your name is Halo, being exclusive to a console just leads to low/no profits.

And we're not happy with that crap Ryse game, seriously no multiplayer deathmatch, gameplay was dull and repetitive, Crytek should worry about making a good game rather than worry about console sales

Maybe if they put a multiplayer mode that supports 32 people, a  coop campaign, or did a better arena mode, people would buy the game.. Games like this single player walk thru don't really hold up as people just rent it, borrow it , play it once and dump it off.. We paid for xbox live so we could play games using xbox live... We got an xbox one because our friends have xbox ones, there isn't really a market for single player games this generation, people who play single player games picked up a playstation.. we got an xbox one because we play multiplayer... The Top Games are Titanfall, Battlefield 4, and Call of Duty Ghosts, Why do people play those games? You take a guess.. I don't remember the last time I looked at my friends list of 1000 people and saw them playing anything other than a multiplayer game..

Maybe you should go to playstation, we are looking for next gen multiplayer gameplay. Not some shitty arena mode and a mediocre campaign with the best feature being it's looks,  but Hey we have High Definition blue ray,  if all we cared about was looks we'd go watch a movie.. anyway and to top it off everything this game offers we can get by purchasing the game used and taking it in a few days later, nothing about this is a serious relationship... and the xbox community doesn't hold onto one night stands.

Crytek is doing this. because THEY'RE BROKE!!! The Sony fanboys here wants to turn this into ( Because its only on Xbox One! ) LOL!! They lost HomeFront and people are walking out on them. Bottom line. They need MONEY ASAP! Just like Crapcom!

I just read that Xbox lost $400 million ( -$400,000,000 ) due to Xbox One.

Ouch. Don't blame ya, Crytek.

What does X1 sales have to do with crytek being stupid and opening up studious everywhere? The X1 is the second fastest selling console ever at this point in its life and its only in 13 countrys right now.Ryse sold a million copies and it wouldnt had sold nowhere near that on pc or ps4 thats a fact. When ryse is released on pc later on you will have the proof the game will do about 100,000 maybe a little more it will flop no doubt.I use to have respect for crytek and i loved ryse.  Went through it 5 times and the coop is awesome .Hands down the best looking game on any platform right now until halo 2 that is.Anyway crytek dont blame your bad decisions on someone else. After this pathetic excuse you guys have made i wont be buying another crytek game period. You guys are right down pathetic

Microsoft aren't 100% happy with the Xbox One sales either neither are the Xtots.

@JJMikhail Exactly....One of the best games out graphically to me maybe people need to adjust their settings  or something. Ryse looks gorgeous in my opinion and it should stay a XBOX only game PS4 don't need it

@milleniaxender So you think it's good that the Crysis devs goes under and people lose their jobs? of course they need money .

@rasterorsoniu13 That figure is taking into account the money spent on developing the system before XBone was launched though. It's normal to take a year or so to recoup that money and start turning a profit. Hell it took Sony a lot longer than that with PS3.

Not a fanboy, I'm a proud PS4 and PC gamer. Think Sony are way out in front on all levels so far this new gen but it's not like microsoft are gonna be in any trouble financially

@rasterorsoniu13 Yeah. The gaming industry is slowly dwindling. Hopefully someone can revolutionize these wanna-be PC's and re-innovates something we've never experienced before...and no, the Oculus Rift is not going to save us in its current state.

@xchmx  Now I'm even less interested it the game if there's a bunch of QTE's.

Vylsith

@smackdowner360 Yeah, that's not true anymore.  It WAS the second fastest selling console in history during the holidays last year.  No idea where it's at now.  I'm guessing sales to consumers are around 4.5 to 5 million.  That definitely does NOT make it the second fastest selling console in history.  Sorry to burst your bubble, but reality calls.  I'll agree that Crytek made bad decisions, but if you're trying to pretend the poor launch of the Xbox One coupled with Ryse being a Xbox One exclusive had nothing to do with their current state your argument is ridiculous.

Vylsith
Vylsith

@bu3aDeL_Maz I'm guessing you mean internet explorer?  I'm not sure why you would want it.  It's a pretty poor browser these days.  I'd love to see Firefox on the PS4 though.  That would be awesome.  If you really mean Windows explorer, then you should also tell Microsoft to put Windows explorer on their console as well.  It clearly lacks a directory tree.

@sonyonly4 Comments like these just remind me how ashamed I can feel to be a part of the Sony fanbase.....

I love Sony systems, but the fans are so bad.

@sirapathetic01 gaming is fine. consoles are dying that's all. 5-10 years from now it will be all about PC (which will get much more streamlined and casual friendly, thanks to valve) and tablets/phones will kill handhelds.

spacecadet25

@Vylsith  What is the 2nd fastest selling console in history then?  And the source of your info?  You can't try to put someone down for being misinformed if you don't have enough solid info to prove them wrong

bu3aDeL_Maz
bu3aDeL_Maz

@Vylsith @bu3aDeL_Maz noooo I hate IE, sure firefox is better, I think it's the best browser.

I meant Windows Explorer, the file manager.

first I was kidding but now I think that would be cool if they really implemented it on their Xbone.

@zeldafan195 @sonyonly4 The fans of every console are bad.  Last generation the Microsoft fans were bashing the PS3 at launch.  This generation the tables are turned.  I think refusing to buy a console because of the company behind it is a bit ridiculous personally, but c'est la vie.  I always buy the consoles that interest me every generation.

sonyonly4

@nazgoroth @sonyonly4 The Sales are dog poo and Xbox just lost 400 million dollars due to the Xbox One.

I forgot Xtots where reading.

@sonyonly4 @nazgoroth From Release til March of this year the xbox was only available in 13 countries. While the ps4 was available in 48. I wonder who will get more sales....

@sonyonly4 @nazgoroth *were

And it would be respectfull if you just called them Xbox players. We're not calling you sony-ponies either... It just shows that you're of very poor mental capacity and generally rather pathetic.

Vylsith
Vylsith

@x-TwilighT-x @sonyonly4 @nazgoroth The vast majority of Xbox 360 sales were in those 13 countries as well.  The PS4 has outsold the Xbox One in those same 13 countries by a considerable amount to date.  You're grasping at straws.  It's pretty clear who will get more sales.  That doesn't mean the PS4 is a better console.  That's completely subjective.  Xbox fans need to cut out the denial nonsense though.  It's getting really old.  The PS3 didn't have the best launch either.  Now tables are turned.  Deal with it.

sonyonly4
sonyonly4

@x-TwilighT-x @sonyonly4 @nazgoroth Is Xbox One available in America? yes, Is Xbox One available in Canada ? yes, Is Xbox One available in Europe? yes,  Is Xbox One available in Australia? yes.

Those are the Major territories and Xbox One is available in all them the only place it isn't is Japan and we all know how that's going down.

Stop with the BS Turkey and the Middle east aren't buying over a million PS4s you clown and if you actually did some research you will find that the sales from the other territories Xbox One isn't available in are next to nothing.

Nobody wants Xbox One stop damage controlling, If it was selling that well the wouldn't of unbundled Kinect and had to make multiple price drops in the first year not to mention all their games going to PC.

nazgoroth

@x-TwilighT-x  Still not officialy out here either (Early september is planned release) I imported mine from Germany early this year. (though some stores are selling imported models) for about 3-4 months now

@nazgoroth @sonyonly4

720p? A couple million sales? A life expectancy of a decade? A few exclusive titles? You two are funny, but ultimately the console is a child's toy when compared to the PC. We deal with 4k resolution,180 million sales since January, have been around since the advent of gaming, and has more exclusive titles than every console in history combined.
