Crytek: Ryse combat is "mashing to mastery"

Design director PJ Estevez says Xbox One game has been designed so anyone can play, but also challenging to master.

Crytek's upcoming Xbox One action game Ryse: Son of Rome has been designed with a concept called "mashing to mastery," according to design director PJ Estevez.

Speaking with Gamereactor, the developer explained that Ryse has been designed so anyone can play, but will also be challenging to gamers who want to "master" their techniques.

"We have this concept we call mashing to mastery. The idea is that anyone can play it and they can mash the buttons and fight, but if you get the right timing you're able to actually master it," Estevez said. "Master the reaction you get out of the AI. You worked on the AI, you get them to this executable state and you execute them and we're like: 'Why does it have to stop there?' 'Why do I have to stop and watch this movie play out?'

"Because we've all played games that have executions and like 30 minutes into it you're like 'Really, I smash this guys head, then I stab then I kick him,'" he added. "So we're like, well, let's continue the flow, let's make it open up a window and give guys who want to spend time learning it more of a reward bonus."

Estevez acknowledged that some gamers may have seen the button prompts during the game's E3 trailer and groaned about the game using quicktime events. However, these slow-motion execution moments are meant to accentuate the experience, Estevez said.

"It's probably one of these things where you see it on stage and you see the button prompts and everyone's like, 'Aww, it's a QTE!' But no, it's really about the flow and maintaining it."

Ryse: Son of Rome is due out in November alongside the Xbox One. The game, formerly a Kinect-exclusive for Xbox 360, follows Roman soldier Marius Titus as he seeks to avenge the death of his family.

oh mashing to mastery...

riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight

You meen, QTE. QTE is so much quicker to say than Mashing To Mastery, why bother calling it something else? Your not masking anything by calling it Mashing to Mastery. The Witcher combat is amazing and that's not QTE and I still get to see the gore.

Just call it what it Is man, don't bother hiding it.

I'm seeing a problem here. They want anyone to be able to play it... but also want people to be able to "master" it. If you're making it so anyone will be able to play it you gotta be making overall difficulty quite low. At that point, mastering the fighting mechanics is kinda moot.

If this "mastery" is only about flashier execution "finisher" moves, like this article suggests, then it's kinda pointless. Mastery of the fighting engine should be rewarded with you overcoming the AI in single combat satisfactorily. By which I mean your parrys, thrusts and cuts would become a sublime action to behold and you'd be dispatching foes while taking no damage at all. That's mastery.

Why wouldn't they just make it optional 'free action' instead of QTE. They call hitting a button at the right timing mastery?

This game looks like your basic eye candy release game for the QTE oooos and aaaahs of the "casual gamer". The sheeple get this, but I can't get Dark Souls II on next-gen? God dammit.

So basically what they're saying is to master the QTE to win a game? Have they forgotten what a game is all about?

I really really like how this game looks.

And as i am growing older, i have a tendency to favor those realsitic titles of the Nintentos cartoony-ish and sony's fantasy, BUT the QTE just killed it!

It removes all the realism from it when the times freezes, a prompt to press a certain button pops and the Ryse universe just holds there, waiting for you to select the certin button...

When M$ has announced that they will reverse, this game and the new Forza almost convninced me to stay put and dont convert to sony.

But the free car's club and the potential that lies on their future exclusives, that will never be ported to PCs, unlike Ryse, will help not to regret the Sony move.

This game could really be the reason i would, maybe ryse 2 without all those QTE will... i can only hope that it will be ported to PC soon!

Cryteck has technology brain ... but not game making brain, Or even if they had, it is dead ever since the original Crysis!

Funny how thanks to God of War, RE4 - 6, Heavy Rain, Lollipop Chainsaw, and other games these QTE are now evil when I'm sure that at E3 when God of War was shown, all the sony kids were like OMFG BEST THING EVER.

You should learn basic grammar before posting! I could care less what language is your primary language. You are on an English speaking forum (or comment section if you prefer) and you are clearly English.  Lastly I was not complaining about your English, I was correcting it.  I was pointing out that you sound like a child when you cannot even complete a sentence.

You too can be Master of the Quick Time Event! How stupid.

Mashing the same QTE buttons ey Crytek?.

What a waste of such a potential game.

And Crytek for fuck sake if you ever making a PS4 exclusive, it better be a game that's specifically for the Core players.

lol Crytek. that's pretty much everything I can say about it.

It sounds like the combat in The Witcher 1, which I like, but Ryse isn't on PC which I don't like. I'm still looking for that game that provides something equal or better to the melee combat in Dark Messiah.

It's a realistic version of God of War, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Play it or ignore it.

Crytek can big up the button mashing combat all they want; they've still fallen so far from being the leaders in gaming technicals. Why did they agree to make a game that will probably be so shallow and dated?

"..Aww, it's a QTE! But no, it's really about the flow and maintaining it."

If a button pops up every now and then, even if I want or don't want it to, it's QTE. Fuck you.

Ummmm, yes, when I saw the trailer with quick time events, I did think "it has quick time events, blegh", but what really got to me was the slow motion execution, it is not only torturingly slow but it is with every kill, and I think it varied 3 times at most. That just looks like it would get boring after 30 minutes, and very repetetive. Again, this is just based on a trailer, so hopefully there is some variation.

I love ancient Rome! This looks really cool and violent/real! God Of War was awesome, but none of that shit really happened. Arrows in peoples faces did! Their is a place for both games and making that trivial comparison is trite and childish. Even from a 12 yearold bandwagon rider with nothing to gain from either systems success.

bunchanumbers

Ryse was supposed to be their big new flagship IP that was gonna sell systems. I saw the E3 gameplay and..... no. Just.... no. They already said that the execution will happen regardless. Its like a interactive movie. Just pointless.

so nobody is bringing up god of war. all that game is repetitive button mashing, repeat animation with no variety,

@Grenadeh That's exactly NOT how the reaction to God of War was.  The reaction was "Hey, QTE's that are actually done right".

Making a whole game wrapped around QTE's deserves the kind of reaction that Ryse has been getting.

@Urizen316 I'll go with ignoring it... but since it's a xbone exclusive I was already ignoring it. just glad it's not a real game otherwise I might wanted to play that.

@ALCHEMISTx24x7 There's this annoying game called Spartacus. Play it. Get pissed off at how broken some of the opponents can be. Repeat.

@bunchanumbers And yet people wonder why I invested in a Wii U. I don't get none of this nonsense with Nintendo games.

@CREEP_NEIGHBOR I don't mind them, what I mind is God of War bullshit where failing them causes you to lose health. I'm sorry, I've played PS since PSX existed, sometimes I still confuse circle and Square. Maybe you could use colors that are further apart in the spectrum than red and pink, idk. Some of us have fucked up eyes - no doubt attributable in part to video games.

Or do like Ascension did or GOW 3 did and put them on respective areas of the screen.

Zoza24

@XxAK47xX  GOW is flat-out a hack and slasher, only the set piece moments and the Executions are QTE.

Navardo95
Navardo95

@XxAK47xX Though QTEs are annoying,GOW beautifully handles it...in fact GOW made QTEs popular.

Grenadeh
Grenadeh

@Bgrngod @Grenadeh They weren't done right, is the problem. They were most definitely not done right. I own and have played all 6 God of War games. The QTEs took the place of EVERYTHING cool other than spinning your blades. Kick atlases ass the first time? All QTE. Kick Zeus's ass? Mostly QTE. Kick Poseidons dragon-thing's ass? QTE. Rip a cyclops' eye out? QTE.

Every single thing in the game that wasn't running or a basic move/magic was handled by QTE and it stopped being fun by the time you had played three of the games, if you even put up with it that long.

Grenadeh
Grenadeh

@Zoza24 @XxAK47xX If by only you mean literally everything. Executions are the majority of the game. It doesn't take that much time to get an enemy to execution state. And, unless you're referring to bosses (which are a heavy part of the game) as set pieces, no - bosses are also very heavily based on QTE.

Urizen316
Urizen316

@Navardo95 @XxAK47xX Shenmue was the first with QTE's, Resident Evil 4 made it popular, God of War capitalised on that by overusing it and making it a trademark for the series. As a Resi1, 2 and 3 fan, Resi4 sucked, but that's beside the point.

XxAK47xX
XxAK47xX

Yes I own 1 and 2. I rented/ beat 3. I havent played the newest one but ill red box it . Yea sure there are a couple of puzzles but in the end it's the same thing over again. Monsters that walk straight up to you with out a care in the world.

CP2077
CP2077

@Lazerproof @XxAK47xX there is QTE in GOW but not every part of the game is full of them the thing I dont like about Ryse is it looks like the QTE stuff is part of the combat all the time

Grenadeh
Grenadeh

I'm not saying I have a better idea on how you should initiate a cutscene of someone kicking someone elses ass in a manner that the in-game animations don't allow, nor am I saying it should necessarily cut to a non-interactive cutscene. But, maybe the game should be designed in the first place to not need to place you outside of the normal MO in order to accomplish things.

@CREEP_NEIGHBOR @CP2077 I hate QTE in every game. I playied GoW to the limit.. wich was GoW3. Didn't play ascention.. a game that don't evolve and still relies on QTE ... it does lose my respect. So Im not just criticising this game.. but every game with QTE.. even GOW
