In Crysis, German developer Crytek has one of the most visually stunning show pieces to advertise its CryEngine 2 game engine. However, when compared to Epic Games' widely licensed Unreal Engine 3, CryEngine 2 has found relatively few takers. Currently, only a few non-Crysis projects are using the technology, such as the mystery games being developed at Crytek's Kiev and Budapest studios, as well as a handful of smaller titles such as MindArk's Entropia Universe.
However, that small group grew by one today, as XLGames announced that it will use Crytek's second-generation game engine for its as-yet-unnamed upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Established in Seoul, South Korea, in 2003, XLGames was founded by former executive VP of development at NCsoft and creator of Lineage Jake Song. No details on the game have yet emerged.
XLGames' upcoming MMORPG won't be the first time Song and other NCsoft alum have worked with Crytek's middleware solution. Previously, the group worked on NCsoft's upcoming fantasy MMORPG Aion: Tower of Eternity, which uses Crytek's original CryEngine. Aion is slated for release in 2008.
Of today's announcement XLGames vice president and technical director Patrick Doane said, "We previously had a lot of success using their ground breaking CryEngine 1 technology while at NCSoft for AION, and after seeing what it could do in the early previews of Crysis, we just knew we wanted to continue to work with their great new tools and engine."

@Ali_G1986 I've played Crysis maxed on settings and it looked great. I don't know if you have played Resistance 2 but the single player graphics are really good. Comparable to Crysis in many ways if not better. The PS3 and even 360 are capable of reaching these graphics since their operating systems utilize hardware way more efficiently than windows does. It is also very possible for them to adapt the cryengine2 to the consoles as well. Crytek is currently working on a project for the PS3 that will most likely do this.

Epic is "winning" mainly because it proved it can make an awesome game, Gears of War.
I'm waiting for a decent MMORPG game for my 360...
Very true....Simple the PS3 and 360 both have a 512 Graphics cards while games like Crysis which use the Crytec engine to play full settings need 1RAM of graphics cards.... E.G http://www3.incrysis.com/screenshots/crysis-render-black-guy.jpg Thats the real Crytec engine which owns every single engine made and will be made for at least 2 years.... If you dont think so? you tell me something better or even CLOSE 2 Crisis
@qmoney88 i very much doubt the cryengine 2 would run well on the ps3 or 360 , way to much going on i feel you just have to look at the vids about on other gamestrailers to see that
Please let this be one of the games they have planned for the ps3
seems odd that this engine is not more sought after, it's like next-nextgen compared to the unreal engine
Come on lineage 3.
We haven't even seen Aion yet, so we have no proof that CryEngine 1 will make a good MMOG, let alone CryEngine 2. On the other hand, I love what CryEngine 2 can do, so I say give it a try.
No way... an MMOG based on the CryEngine 2? now THIS is something i would like to see and hear about the progress in the future
More CryEngine 2 please
Not many takers, that's too bad.
@ bulletsword Where did you found out that it will have monthly fees? I have been looking everywhere on the net but so far no luck....
Boring... *Waits for Crysis, the only good game mentioned in this news article*
Since the dawn of good response time on LCD's I haven't been playing at res's below 1600x1200... I miss the truer color reproduction on a well calibrated CRT but LCD's just look so damn crisp... No going back for me... god damn native resolutions... Force us to buy the big $$$ vid cards... it's all a ploy
that will make the framerate 20x worse than crytek's already is
yeah man, at 1600x1200 its not going to happen, alough e3 proved that running the game in dx9 and at a resolution of 1024x768 the game still looks damn good. also most new games are optimized for 2 cores and alan wake is supposed to get a huge performance increase from using 4 so its probably not going to be THAT long before games are taking good advantage of all those cores. but you are right, 4 isnt anywhere near necessary for running the game (the editor though will see a huge advantage out of it though), same with ut3, editor will see a big advangage but not the actual game. and 80 core should be good, but amds fusion has some real potential, not that the 80 core doesent but if fusion pans out well it very well may put amd in the lead. oh, and of the 4 licenses of ce2, 3 of them are for mmos, the first licensee is making a second like type game set on mars, second is doing an fps (merchants of brooklyn), third is an update for entropia universe and the fourth is this.
I was exagerrating with the 3FPS. At 1600x1200 or higher I can't imagine it running very well at max settings on a 7800 gtx... But I don't KNOW these things so maybe you're right. 80 core? Holy -blam- I don't doubt you have solid info... and good point, you didn't say they would be used, I assumed you meant that for some reason. Can't wait to have 80 cores and play games that are just starting to use two of them (kidding)... they will likely start optimizing games to use multiple cores, without there being any limit to how many cores is ideal... of course I'd think 80 would be over kill lol
I just want Vampire: The Masquerade / World of Darkness. Everything else can go home to mamma.
colinjennison: mid 2008 intel release nahalem (dont know if thats spelled right but close enough i think). nahalem is intels native quad core processor and is based on 45mn and uses a new socket, there will be a refresh sometime in 2009 that uses 32nm. some nahalem processors will have 8 cores per die (ie, an 8 core processor) and with the new socket will also be a new chipset that allows two nahalems on one board, 16 physical processing cores per board is closer than a year away actually. also take in the fact that nahalem will use hyperthreading for a total of up to 32 threads running at a single time, thats 8 times as man threads running as a computer with a quad core processor. also, 80 core (not a typo and if you dont believe me go look it up) processors are due by 2012, intel has working prototypes. this is just intel, go look at what amd is offering up, not exactly the same but just as juicy. and i never said that all of those cores would be used, but that they would be aviable. also, look at the link in my last comment, it didnt run at 3fps, please dont doubt me.
stop with the MMO's
e3bigc: not much bs actually, and you absolutly fit the description of the person who i just described (i mean no disrespect or anything derragatory but i must point that out). first, there is NO 7600 gts, the 8 series was the first time that the gts suffix had been used for a card in several generations. second, minimum requirements ARE NOT released, so it taking a 7600 to run is also incorrect and it does not require a dual core processor either, a single core will be able to run it. also, i have a 7800 gt and can run hl2 and cs:s on max settings and get over 200 fps (about 110 when i used a p4, now that i have an e6600 it sometimes and depending on the map it shoots to over 300) so please dont tell me that a setup like that cant even run half life 2, its actually quite obvious by your comments you do have no clue what you are talking about. third, heres the link for all you nay-sayers out there http://www.crysis-online.com/Articles/vinnie-talks-to-michael-khaimzon.php and for those who dont feel like going through and looking "Vinnie: What kind of computers are being used at Crytek? Michael: Man, everyone has a different machine here. I don’t even know the specs of my machine. I honestly have no idea. Well I've got an NVIDIA 7800GTX, I know that much. Vinnie: haha, same card as me. Michael: So, you will enjoy Crysis :-) Vinnie: You really think so? Michael: Well it runs here, and there is no amazing secret hardware or software I have :-) Vinnie: So you think my pc will run Crysis fine. Maxed out at 1024x768? Michael: I think so Vinnie: So Crysis runs fine for you? At the highest details? Michael: Sure, but it’s not even optimized yet :-)" also please notice the date at which this was posted, october 29th, 2006. by the time optimizations are done and over with this game should run quite nicley on many setups. e3bigc, ive been following this game like a madman since last may or june, chances are ive been following it a lot more closly than you have, so please dont challenge me on the specifics of crysis because chances are i will be able to put your false points to rest (i really dont mean to tout my own horn here but....)
ratix... "the game ran MAX on a single 7800 gtx and a single core processor" Yeah... It RAN on that system... AT 3FPS. (or maybe you were running at a low res like 1024x768... i dunno) 16+ core processors in two years? Maybe if they start using two to thier full potential which may not even happen within a year... They are STARTING too... but all programs will be optimized for more than one core just about the same time as everyone owns an HDTV....
lol, this will take forever to make, time it comes out god knows what type of engine will be out. MMOs are taking to long to make now adays.
WOO!
Well said ratix2.
Ratix, I smell a bit of BS there. If I'm not mistaken, the 7600 GTS is the minimum, and you needed a dual core processor. With that setup you have there, I would barely be able to run Half Life 2 on medium settings. And as for this MMO, most likely it will just be another run of the mill MMO like most of NCSoft's games.
for all of you that are saying you need a $2000 computer to run crysis, you are dead wrong and are OVERestimating crysis's optimization. as of last october (over one year before crysis is released) the game ran MAX on a single 7800 gtx and a single core processor. that being said, a computer like that can cost less than an 80gb ps3 if you build it so no, crysis wont take a beast of a machine to run. now on to the mmo, likely this game is at least 2 years from release which puts the release at late 2009 at the earliest, by the time its released its likely that we will be looking foward to the release of of the equivlent of the geforce 11 or even 12k series of cards, 16+ core processors and much much more in terms of hardware and possibly crytek showing off ce3, so by this time this game comes computers will have cought up and even lower end computers should be able to run the game at a good graphical quality (computers of the time of course). people please, stop overestimating what it will take to run games on ce2, you obviosuly havent read anything on crysis and are just ball parking what you think it will take to run the game based on what it looks like which is a bad mistake, learn what it WILL take to run crysis and THEN post your comments. thank you.
Wo...with the Crytek engine...Just think of how that will look...
Hmm, I expect good things.
Game: $50 New computer: $2500 Monthly fees: $15 a month The idea for this game: priceless Well, i guess all genres have to evolve one way or another...
Having an MMO run on CryEngine 2 may sound over-the-top for todays standards. However, assuming that this game will be released in a few years, computers that can run Crysis will be rather cheap by that point in time. In 2010, you will have laptops that can max Crysis no problems :)
It better be an MMO that takes place in the jungle. I seen tech demos of CryTek Engine2 in different locations, and they didn't look so good.
I hope they don't do an MMO.
I doubt we'll ever hear much more of this news again. At most, it'll only be released in Korea. And that's at most -- anything closer: we'll get a few screenshots and will find out it was canned years ago in some forum a long time from now.
Sounds interesting...doubt it will turn out to be that great.
Great another MMO. Even worse, an MMO that will be running a highly sophisticated graphics engine making it near impossible to run without a 2000$ + PC. NIce... And worse the team that worked on an MMO that isn't even out yet? I mean they don't even know how good they are yet
cry engine 2 for a mmorpg ... everybody say "how cool ! " ... but i don't think so, it might end up so heavy that for online file transfers it will be too big and also, do we need an other mmorpg ?!
Lag hell I bet.
The high graphics requirement of Crytek 2 is going to make it really hard for servers to host, but hopefully they will be able to resolve the issue.
im excited, woot
You don't need to have a godly computer, just get ready for it, since most games will begin using newer and more powerful technology that will just blow past an old rig. You can build a sweet rig to play pretty much any current game for around $600-$700 bucks, including 2 gig ram, 8600gt, vista etc. if you do it from scratch. If you just upgrade your pc...you can probably cut like 300 bucks off that to get your rig into peak fighting condition. If your motherboard is too old, replace it, if not don't An ok motherboard costs $50, a better one with either SLI or CrossFire around $100-$150. Best are 200+ but just come with a lot of stuff you may not even use... Get a good processor for your new(or old mobo). Dual core processors from AMD are around 65 dollars and up. A decent one would be round $150-200. Get memory. 2 GB of ram can run from 80 dollars to 200 for nicer(more overclockable) stuff. Video card. You don't need top of the line but don't go too cheap otherwise you'll have to replace it that much quicker. 8600gt which will play most games really well costs from 100-180 give or take... If you plan ahead on an upgrade you can even avoid buying it all in one go. Buy the three main components, CPU, mobo(if necessary), and memory(be sure to have matched all the parts to the type that fits your motherboard of course, gotta be careful otherwise you can't use the parts together). If you buy those three with onboard video, you can survive for a while without a videocard until you have enough. Oh and you might as well get a pci-express motherboard if you don't have one by now. AGP is the past. It was good, but their is something that replaced it already. Make sure to get a pci-express graphics card, not an AGP. More or less, you should only need to spend around 300-500 for an upgrade of your pc, depending on the parts you choose. But be sure to research the compatibility of the parts your choosing. Noone really can say that they can't upgrade cuz its too expensive. The bleeding edge tech like the 8800 ultra etc. is out of reach for most(excluding those with money to burn), but if you save up you can really get a pretty sweet system.
An MMO running on the CryEngine2? MMOs have enough technical problems without horsepower-draining graphics engines being used. Plus the success of WoW and other MMOs like Guild Wars is that they'll run on any computer bought in the last 5 years, making their possible audience much larger.
superhappyfuntime!
-This could end up being the hottest looking MMORPG to date.
Guys this should run fine when it comes out, think about it if Aion isn't coming out until 2008 and it's using the CryEngine 1 then this game prob won't be out until late 2009 or 2010 earliest. By that time i'd like to think that you'd have a pc capable of running that.
A little unfair, saying that CryEngine 2 doesn't have the volume of licensees of Unreal Engine 3. Cervat has already stated that CryTech are being very picky when it comes to licenses, as they are prepared to devote a lot of in-house talent to licensees. This means that they are doing their their best to ensure that only 'Great' and well-conceived games will be developed using their technology and resources. Makes sense to me...
wow imagine how realistic it will be
lol ridiculously awesome. An MMO using CryE 2.0...Its going to Make Conan look like a SNES game (with a very talented developer using this tool of course) Good god I cant imagine lol
