Crysis Updated Hands-on - The Ice Level

Crytek shows off a frozen paradise and introduces us to the alien troopers in this eagerly awaited first-person shooter.

September 25 is a big day for shooter fans. Not only will Halo 3 finally arrive for the Xbox 360, but PC fans can finally look forward to getting their hands on the demo for Crysis, the eagerly awaited first-person shooter about a tropical paradise, North Korean soldiers, and alien invaders. Crysis promises to raise the bar for graphics, of course, but developer Crytek also wants to prove that its 2004 hit Far Cry was no fluke. The demo will feature the first level of the game, Contact, but with the release of Crysis set for November 16, EA and Crytek gave us a glimpse at Ice, one of the later levels in the game where the aliens transform the environment.

First, we've got some interesting updates about the story, which has changed quite a bit from what we were originally told a year ago. Crysis was originally going to be the story of how a mysterious object crashes to Earth on a remote Pacific island. When the US and North Korean militaries investigate, aliens emerge out of the object, putting the fate of the world at stake. Well, the US and North Koreans are still in the game, but nothing's crashing to Earth, at least not in the time span of this game.

"We change the fiction more for the terms of the future extensibility, and I wanted to add a bit of primal evil and play with the haunting aspects of islands. And so we said the ship did crash in the first ice age and the mountains actually encapsulated the ship. We don't know how many are on the Earth" said Cevat Yerli, Crytek CEO and director of Crysis. This fits together with what Yerli told us last month when he said that the story is designed to be a trilogy of games. However, he was also very clear that you can expect an epic finale in Crysis.

Ice begins with a tantalizing glimpse of tropical sunlight. Without spoiling things too much, in the mission prior to Ice, you find yourself trapped deep underground. At the beginning of Ice, you've finally made your way back to the surface where you see blue sky and the emerald green of the jungle, but then everything changes. The aliens unleash their cold technology and flash freeze the island in seconds. So instead of finding yourself on the warm surface, you're suddenly stranded in a frozen paradise that's crawling with aliens.

There's a vertical nature to this level that's going to be a change of pace from the large landscapes that you'll explore early on in the game. That's because you find yourself near the top of a ridgeline and must work your way down the steep, rocky slope. Thankfully, you' won't have to worry about slipping on all the ice. However, you do have to worry about the troopers, which are alien vehicle units that hunt and collect survivors in the ice. These troopers are reminiscent of the machine sentinels seen in The Matrix, from the way they fly about to their metallic bodies, which have streaming tentacles. They're also pretty smart.

"The difference between trooper combat and human combat is that troopers are agile, fast, [and] they learn how you negotiate the environment," Yerli said. "They negotiate the environment like you, start jumping around things. They essentially are almost like a nanosuit soldier, in a sense, without the weaponry power of you, of course. But they're intelligent. They work in group packs. If you go cloak, one of them checks out where you are. The others stay back. Then when one finds you, he starts communicating and all the aliens try to support him."

Cold enough for you?

How you get through this level is up to you, which is pretty much the motto of Crytek's design. You can be aggressive, using run-and-gun tactics to get past the aliens. You can also try to be sneaky, using your nanosuit's powers to cloak out of sight and run from cover to cover. Or you can employ a mix of both brazen action and stealth caution.

All this happens in a frozen environment that's as believable as any we've seen in a game. The sensation of cold is there and quite possibly the best we've ever seen. It's not just the frost-covered terrain, but it's the beautiful, softly falling particles drifting through the air. Even the light seems cold.

Ice is an example of Crytek showing things that we haven't seen before. The jungle environments of the early part of the game are nice but also familiar to those found in Far Cry. However, while many of us have seen and been in snowstorms, how many of us can say the same of being trapped in a tropical jungle that's frozen through? When you throw in what promises to be some of the toughest and most alien foes that you'll face in a first-person shooter, you can see why we're so eager to get our hands on Crysis. At this point, November can't come early enough.

aymanstile, what's the story as far as the Beta, I initially heard it was buggy, have they cleaned it up and put out another version or something?. Power Struggle looks amazing what is it like? To others pissed off about the demo, be patient that sandbox feature may well not be of any use to you but if it means we can edit things in the same way Halo3 users get to that will be great. Also more importantly the sooner the homebrewers familiarize themselves with it the better, Those guys are going to create some very cool Zero Gravity multiplayer maps for all of us, the possibilities are well and truly crazy given the gameplay mechanics found in this game and how important a role the environment plays. The multiplayer in Crysis is going to be truly awesome and uniquely so. Be patient :)

I played the beta for a couple of hours and its amazing. Graphics, gameplay are totally awesome. I was afraid that the multiplayer will suck, but boy I was wrong. For any of you who're still deciding whether to pay fileplanet and get the beta or not, think no more. It is totally worth it. Most of you will probably end up preordering the game. Those guys from Epic have some real competition now. I hope that UT3 will be just as good as Crysis if not better. In any case I'll probably end up buying both games since I'm huge fan of unreal series.

ya this is an FPS only game. your gonna need a fairly good card though but you can get the 8600 GT and it can run it on like 1280 by 1024 which is real good. but ya if you want a pc game like gears of war then just get gears of war for PC cause its coming out around when this does. but im definatly getting this game. love how you can design your gun anytime. and you can upgrade certain things at times. if that graphics just are crazy.

oh... i was hoping it be like GoW :D i hate FPS games cause you have cool looking character but you dont see him/her :( and the armor on those guys looks so cool so i would want to see more of them

PS360owner, if you bothered to check your facts you would find that only Far Cry was ever made by Crytek. Soon after Far Cry's release Ubisoft bought the name and produced a pile of Far Cry spin-offs and crap games. Crytek was never involved. Ubisoft are now making Far Cry 2, which seems to be breaking the trend and is looking very nice (probably because it's being made by a completely different development team). AND it's set in southern Africa, fulfills your wishes for change.

It'll probably come out for the 360 just like Far Cry has come out again and again for the XBox and 360. It seems that Crytek just keeps coming out with the same game over and over again. How many Far Cry versions were there? I lost count after three. So, of course it'll be coming out for the consoles. In fact, they'll probably start working on it immdeiately after the PC version comes out. I remember when Far Cry first came out, people were raving about how good the grahics were and what kind of card they needed to run it. I'm so glad I don't have to do this any more, as I''ve decided to play all of my games on consoles from now on. Upgrading my PC every year was proving too expensive. The last graphics card I purchased was my $400 x1900 xt. Now, it's probably worthless. In any case, I'm glad Crytek has decided to diversify a bit from the jungle settings. I was getting sick of those. Still, it looks to me like another Far Cry - just not in the jungle and with better graphics. Knowing Crytek, they'll also probably be coming out with Crysis this and Crysis that for years to come, like they did with Far Cry.

pistolsmoke_254 , I agree with your thoughts, but in relation to FarCry2 that wont be out fror a long while yet I think, it's still early in developement. The game is set in Africa and also features high level A.I as found here. Brad Shoemaker did a preview detailing what he saw but there is no footage currently from what I understand, it was only shown behind closed doors.

This very well may be the game of the year from the way it looks. If FarCry 2 doesn't hold up to it's billing, Crysis has my vote. It's good that this game is going to be released before Christmas, that way it gives gamers a chance to experience both titles without having to risk choosing one or the other and being disappointed. But even if they were coming out together, I'd end up buying both!

Grey79 I am well aware of that if you thought otherwise :). My thinking behind them making a ground up PS3 version is the fact they are known to be making games on the platform. They even have some Wii games planned which I would love to see as a proud Wii owner. PS3 is the only console that I do not own, yet. Even thoughI own a 360 given the choice I would like to see it on PS3 once developers start that tapping into the consoles potential, As it stands currently 360 versions of multi platform games look and run better, developers are currently still struggling to get the best out of it, that will change however and then PS3 owners will be laughing I forsee. That console will shine eventually. crysis beta- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VP8NP38d7ks

The PS3 is a completely different platform than the PC and would require a completely different codebase. So unless they planned a PS3 launch from the beginning, it wont come for the PS3. You just dont copy code from one platform to another and hit the compile button.

linkyshinks

Because any console version would have to be made practically from the ground up due to the memory issues it would mean even more investment on Crytek's part, and more labour on a game that they have already sppent 4 years making!. If I worked for Crytek on the Cyrsis project I would say hell to that, I dont care how good this game is we have made, I am not doing it. I think it would go out to another developer who lacks the same expertise. This derivative crap cannot be for real can it, it's a joke right, a mock one surely. Lolz, conceding, I state clearly that I think it will come to the PS3 all over this thread. Graphics have nothing to do with the memory issues that a console version would have because of the open world environment and the complexity of the A.I.. You really should watch that disclosue interview here on Gamespot and what the lead designer has said. @eric7233: Hi dude (if i may say :)), Unfortunately, your car analogy seems wrong because when i buy a new car (PC), it is already faster than your ford mustang saleen (console) (then i guess it makes my car Ferrari, thanks ;)). About the price of PC vs. console gaming (the most powerful side of consoles). Even i think that anybody who buys a very high end and expensive gaming PC JUST FOR GAMING is either very rich and does not know where he/she should spend his/her money or is blind. Honestly, one of the reasons why i choose PC gaming is that PC gaming is EVEN CHEAPER THAN console gaming (or about the same). In today's world, a real computer is compulsory, nobody can live without a real PC. Do you think consoles with dvd, music, internet browsing, gaming features are enough? So, i will already have a PC but for PC gaming, i just buy more professional gaming GPU. That's all. In that meaning, one should compare the price of any console to the price of ONLY A GPU. Apart from this, PC games are cheaper than console games, etc. How about life cycle? With a "good" GPU, you can do PC gaming about 3 - 4 years very easily.

@eric7233 i to game on a 360 and agreed it has a serious amount of quality games coming out from halo3 launch date right upto xmas ( probably to many games but ahhhh a man can never have enough of a good thing i say and have you been on the cod 4 beta yet ? thats great ) and can see from a financial point of veiw that the 360 and co make sense but a game like crysis as did farcry and half life 2 will bring people back to pc gaming .

Lolz, the effects we are so proud of?. The vast majority of video footage from shows including ALL the latest from Leipzig have the game running in DX9.0c using one 8800gtx for the very reason of showing people that this can run on medium spec, How do you come up with the number of 6000, are you using 3D mark figures that have no bearing on this what so ever?. The effects in DX9.0.c have most of us PC gamers impressed as they are comparable to DX10 games made by other developers currently. Linky, you are basically conceding to the fact that xboxs and probably ps3 can easily run crysis

eric7233

hardcore.....Well ..the reason i check back at this post is because you post here and I don't have the pleasure of bumping into to many people on gamespot forums that are able to hold an intelligent debate to any degree. Also, I do play pc games as long as my pc can handle them ..im a long time die hard unreal tournament player and swg/wow/eq. So, I havent lost interest in pc games..It is just becoming less and less worth keeping up technology since there are only a few games here and there that i will miss. I'm hoping i can run hellgate london but If i cant .. I'll be fine with mass effect and( ill spare you the long list of great xbox 360 games coming out.) Anyway.. i drive a chevy cavalier and i play on a console because thats where i stand financially as do most people. And because consoles are getting better games now than ever. I am very happy to see that the developers are really on board with console gaming now and making fantastic games for consoles. While some of these games will eventually get ported to the pc.. not all of them will and alot of the ones that do ..get ported badly since they were designed for the console from the ground up. This is a growing trend .. more and more people every day are giving up the pc upgrade race and just getting a console of choice and now in this generation , they are getting all the gaming they desire. By the way with the car analogy .. I'd say its more like .. you buy a toyato corrolla and then spend double the cost of the car to supe it up and I buy the ford mustang saleen( last gen was just a mustang gt) .. Mine is fast and great looking and will be in style for a long time and has plenty of horsepower for my needs and yours does after the upgrades and you can continue to keep adding to yours and making a little better here and there to get a little more perfomance here and there but we are both happy cus we both have what we want..you just get to sqeeze a little more juice out of yours by spending more money.

@eric7233 pc gaming is expensive and for me it's about running it at 1600x1200 or through my hdtv with as much turned to max as possible so every few years requires a fair amount of upgrading or a new rig and i am sure there are plenty out there that are the same , you only have to look at nvidia and so profit margins when a new great game comes along like this , they basicly sell high end gpus . damn them lol

@eric7233: Dear Eric, First of all, have you noticed that you keep watching PC gaming pages and this forum? I will not make a suggestion about why this is so. You should know the reason for this better than everybody else. Secondly, I am sure a gentleman like you can use much more polite comments than this "All this pc pride is kinda pointless". Thirdly, nobody is saying that PC games sell more than console games, or number of PC gamers is more than console gamers. This situation is very normal. But numbers are nothing. As a said before in this forum, consoles are good for bringing gaming to a much wider audience but this does not make consoles better in the terms of using cutting edge technology, flexibility, customizability, etc. Try to think like this; - Both Ford and BMW brand cars are sold. - Both brand cars can get you from the point A to point B. - Ford sells more than BMW. We (PC gamers) are the ones who choose BMW. ...and since you used the word "pride" in your post, then i can easily say that "Of course, i am proud of my PC !". Lastly and very honestly, i am glad to hear that you have posted such a comment so that people can think about this and decide which car best suits for them. Take care & Best regards,

eric7233
eric7233

All this pc pride is kinda pointless ...theres probably 6000 people( who are gamers) total that have pc's that can run this game at max settings to get the effect you guys are so proud of. They WILL make a console version eventually and it WILL be fun and it WILL run a little slower not be as flashy and have longer load times ( so will basically be the same experience that the average person playing this on a normal pc will have.) ..but it will still be good and the reason it will go to consoles is because crytek wants to make money and they will not not limit themselves to the comparatively small pc market ..especially the part of the market that has a pc powerful enough to make this game a way better experience then it will be on a console. Times have changed. Most of the developers are on board with the console generation now and those who stick to being pc only will miss hundreds of mind blowing fantastically fun games because of pc fanboyism. Please dont make your only arguments about my underexaggeration of how many people have the uber powerful pc( cus i cant possibly come up with a real number but i know alot of people and only a handful have those kinds of pcs and general economics says that theres a low percentage of the population that can or will afford a high end pc { and not many people are gurus who know how to build there own high end pc for cheap} )... try to be a little stronger if you reply.

Agree, only to add that also any PS3/360 version would mean a radical change to the game in the sense of loading times that will break much of the action. In this PC version it will be well disguised but any PS3/360 future versions will see loading of data constantly, in effect changing the experience dramatically. Matrixspidey, depending on the dificulty seting the NORTH (-should always be emphisized) Koreans speak either korean-english or full blown Korean. It has also been stated by Crytek that the finale to the game has been designed with the intention to be the most epic experience ever created in a videogame so far. @alex77k bioshock watered down hmmm i didn't think so as for the comment i hope this game stays for pcs and consoles get games that are more suited to consoles ? lol get back to the system wars why don't you ? wake up and smell the coffee the 360 and ps3 are getting big support from were once only pc devco , as for crysis the game that it is now i cant see how it could be ported over to consoles as i have said before the engine is designed to take current pc hardware to the max and push future hardware too the brithers at Crytek want the engine to be around for some time and when you upgrade your pc one can play it again and see stuff their old rig couldn't do .

actually the ps3 has 512mb ram, however its split between graphics and general purpose ram, the 360s memory on teh other hand is unified, 512mbs is for both graphics and general purpose memory. you logic there is flawed. also, alex77k, xdr ram is faster than most other ram available, but it has absolutly horrendus memory latencies which is one of the reasons it still hasant found widespread use despite it being available for the last 4 years.

alex77k
alex77k

lol, possible in 360 but not in ps3? Go back to system war fanboy. PS3 has 512 MB, 256 of the fastest, and 256 normal like the ones xbox has. Besides, who wants a great PC FPS game watered down like Bioshock to support the consoles. I hope this game stays for PCs, and consoles get games that are more suited for consoles.

ptownzson89
ptownzson89

this game might be able to run on a 360 but its not possible on a ps3...the 360 has 512MB ram and the ps3 has 256MB ram...so the ps3 cannot handle the game...that's why its so hard to make a ps3 game because of the memory
