Crysis 2 Updated Impressions

We got a new look at Crysis 2, with executive producer Nathan Camarillo as our New York tour guide.

by

At the EA London Showcase this year, Crysis 2 executive producer Nathan Camarillo was in town to show off the latest build of the game. But before we got to see the long-awaited sequel in action, Camarillo spent a good portion of his presentation talking about the first game. "The nanosuit came in late in development," he claims, suggesting that it wasn't implemented quite how the team would want. Camarillo explained how players of the first game fell into three different "buckets," as he called them, according to how they used the nanosuit powers. You'd have the predator guys, who would engage the speed boost and camouflage abilities and then pick off enemies one by one. Then there were the people who retracted from combat, using mid- to long-range weapons to stay out of danger. Finally, he described the superheroes, who would just head into combat and run and gun their way around.

New York gets alluringly destroyed by CryEngine 3.

For Crysis 2, the team at Crytek has rearranged the powers slightly, made them more accessible, and integrated the binoculars into the suit's visor. The biggest change for Crysis 2, though, is the environment--as Camarillo says, this is the first Crytek game not to have been set in the jungle. "New York represents everything possible since the dawn of industrialisation--if you can't save New York, then you can't save the world," said Camarillo. Perhaps more importantly, the city's dense population of buildings is a perfect challenge for CryEngine 3, the studio's in-house engine, and the team certainly has its sights on redefining the visual benchmark once again.

The demo that we saw was running on the Xbox 360 and started with the main character, Nomad, jumping several stories down a tall building. We watched as an EA representative played the game, engaging the nanosuit's powers to take down enemies in a variety of different ways. He switched on the power boost to jump from building to building, and used the predator camouflage to sneak up on victims and take them down silently. We saw plenty of cool stuff from the demo, such as the ability to fling enemies out of windows, sending them tumbling down to the streets below. Nomad could also rip off mounted gun turrets, Master Chief-style, and mow down enemy forces.

The first half of the demo was all about human combat, but the second half showed off the city's alien invaders. After a short break to skip over a cutscene that "would ruin the story for everyone," we saw Nomad captured by the private military and thrown into a helicopter. A nearby building was then torn apart by a huge alien creature, sending the helicopter tumbling to the ground and allowing Nomad to make his escape. However, he was soon on the ground facing the invading alien forces. Unable to fend off the attack though, he took a fatal blow, at which point the demo was over and the Crysis 2 logo appeared.

While it was certainly a short look at the game, Crysis 2 still appears to be shaping up well, especially given it's the series' first appearance on consoles. With the game due for release by the end of the year, we're bound to see more on it soon, so keep an eye out during our Electronic Entertainment Expo coverage, where we should be able to bring you even more details.

Crysis warhead was soooo much better than MW2 that it hurts. Now people who dont have pc's will realize how great this series is.

well technically hardware wise, PCs are simply stronger and therefore can play bigger, better games... and even the same game but bigger and better thanks to extremely high frame rates and graphics.. of course, these very strong computers easily cost over $1,500 before after-market changes... (and, therefore, I prefer consoles.. I don't have all that money to burn. Plus my friends use consoles, not PCs..) Also, Midway_Moron, computers are VERY capable of using controllers.. even PS3 controllers can wirelessly be used on PCs... AND PC gaming isn't even nearing its end. AND they will certainly not be coming out in 2012. AND I think you're very uneducated. Don't get me wrong, I prefer consoles and never use my PC to game (has a horrible graphics card lol)... but I couldn't resist from proving how very wrong you were... :)

@FallenAngelXBL - It is completely subjective that PC's are superior are FPS games over consoles. While I agree that PC games are not going to die out anytime soon, it's not true that current gen consoles are equivalent to 5 year old PCs. PCs being better than consoles is completely subjective, as it is vice versa.

midway_nights, quite clearly you aren't a pc gamer! I can think of a billion reasons why pc's are better than consoles, and another billion why they aren't dying and won't. :-p lol FallenAngelXBL your right mate! :-)

I hope they use the New York setting well for both the story and gameplay as this looks like one of my most anticipated games of this year.

fallenangelixbl :p a good pc will always cost you more than a ps3. ask me i went into this mess before. i bought parts for my pc and asked a neighbor to build them for me.

using a WIRELESS controller is more comfortable than using a keyboard and mouse. for PC users, you guys better start saving your little pocket money to upgrade your old graphics card. or maybe its possible that you guys will get the game after consoles release. PC gaming is on last stages, and it will be completely ruined when next installment of xbox and playstation will release may be in 2012. that will end your PC gaming. so its better for you guys to upgrade now so you can play in the last dying days of PC gaming.

Also, only morons BUY PC's from a company, you buy the parts and custom build it yourself (or get someone to build it for you). My PC cost me less than a PS3 (when PS3 was first released) yet maxes crysis out (and warhead) no bother full res. Infact, my PC is more powerful than all the consoles ever released combined...possibly twice XD It really isnt all that expensive to do it, and people who claim it will cost thousands have no idea what they are talking about.

FallenAngelXBL
FallenAngelXBL

Honestly, current gen consoles are about as powerful as a 5 year old PC. Consoles cant stand up graphically. This is a PC buy for me since you get the FULL experience, Hyper Graphics, better controls (you cannot beat keyboard and mouse in FPS...fact) and better community support since we tend to get free DLC and free MOD's...also, our games are cheaper to top it all off :)

You know, the current top consoles are already kinda old you know. I mean, they're great and fun for what they are and can do you know. I'm on neither side (as in PC or console), but I definitely have a choice of platform depending on what I want to do. The PC will always be technically superior, at least in our lifetime. And what's wrong with that. Also, all platforms have their own great games, just choose which games you want and go with that platform. I've always played on the PC until I found some great fun games for the PS3 and got me a PS3 for some extra games and thus entertainment. Too bad the 'Crysis 2'-trailer I downloaded on the PS3, was cool, but looked crap though. Well, so be it, it's a PC-title to me anyway, not out of principle, but because it started on there and I prefer the controls on it too. Personal choice, and if it's appreciated on the consoles when it's out, that's great.

@netpirate99 You can use any controller on a PC, including controllers for 360, PS3, Wii. All controlls are FULLY customisable for PC games too.

@asfan0072006 Using games like God of War, Forza & Gran Torismo as excuse for disliking PC is pretty ignorrant. Its clear to me that you dont know as much about PC gaming as you think you do. I could use your tactic & say the same about such PC games as Live for Speed, GTL, Stalker series, Command & Conquer4, WoW, Crysis 1, Crysis Warhead, Crysis Wars, Warhammer 40k, Quake Live, Dawn of War 2 series, Star Wars The Old Republic, APB, Starcraft 2, Total War series, Guild Wars 2, Vindictus, Sins of a Solar Empire, Infinity: The Quest for Earth, The Setlers 7, Disciples 3, DIABLO 3, Scourge of War, Heroes of Newerth, Anno 1404, Tropico 3, Majesty 2, Drakensang series, Star Trek Online, Forged By Chaos, Age of Conan, Global Agenda, Red Orchestra 2, Arma 2 series, Delta Force series, Natural Selection 2, Lone Wolf FFTD, rFactor 1&2, Wings of Prey, Storm of War, Silent Hunter V, DCS series, Fighter Ops, Jumpgate Evolution, Black Prophecy, Perpetuum, Lock on 2, Seven G, Company of Heroes series, (...the list goes on and on) PC gets exclusives too, & im willing to bet the PC has more exclusives since the 360 was released than both the 360 & PS3 combined. BTW GOW is on PC too & its a lot better than the 360 version, with extra content, better graphics, better controls, & comunity maps/mods for both single player & multiplayer. Also watch the Intel quad core demo of Alan Wake on PC & see how amazing it could have been compared to how mediocre the game ended up on 360.

@Yaranhameleh well why i said fu** pc and buy consles is becoz i have been betrayed by pc. what i said after that read it also, NO TITLES. only strategies cant do alone. no actions, no arcades, no good car racing but stupid NFS those who havent given any good game since mostwanted (carbon drift was good though). but look forza and gran trismo are kicking. even nfs gt (pro street) failed. gears, God of war. or do i have to mention Alak Wake?

netpirate99

though the consoles have the price and interface advantage (using a controller is more comfortable than using a keyboard and mouse), pc graphics are much more impressive than consoles due to the increased power in high end pc systems, which is important for a game like crysis.

Wow, good luck running this on high - well not unless you spend a couple of grand on a PC, just stands to reason that the PC game is a dying breed.

@asfand0072006 I'm sorry that my response to what you said turned out be aggressive, I didn't mean that it would be like that, I reread what I wrote and you are right. And still I will have to comment once again. "comon people you treating me like im a fanboy", I believe that you are not a fanboy yet your original post clearly states something else: "fu** PC buy PS3 and XBOX360 and play games how they are meant to be played". It's hard not to interpet what you have said in any other way. And "pc lovers, i was one too. but pc aint worth a crap". Let's be honest, it doesn't seem like you love PC from what you are saying.

do you think they went to the city with this sequel on the basis that the consoles wouldnt be able to handle the process of the jungles?

@Strickter @Yaranhameleh .. comon people you treating me like im a fanboy. dont you see i own a pc far expensive than my consoles, im post-graduated and doing a job and moneys not an issue. i never disagreed with pc having good fps. then i said that keys in hand not any fps key sync, and i talked about titles on pc and consoles. comon b realistic and think. you will now consoles got more titles. and i respect both of yours thinking. and Yaranhameleh try not to get aggresive, i was just giving example about game of the years, i dont go for scores ever, do you know my still favourite game is mgs1 and i still got it installed in my pc. it is always in my pc. if you wanna call me a fanboy of something then call me MGS fan. and i own consoles also

I hope they won`t screw it adding excessive stuff... Crysis itself was a great game, so it should not be "overcooked" by developers, trying to "improve" it...

I am a pc for life, their are other systems(360,ps3) in my home for my grand kids, games are easier for me to play on the pc, getting older, thumbs don't work as they use to. I strongly believe, it a persons preference to which system THEY feel better playing. The mouse and keyboard is MUCH easier for me period.

PC and consoles are the same thing? Not even close. PC is going to be better, but obviously it comes at a price. Literally. Which is the only thing anyone against PCs can say, which isn't even that bad assuming you're not stupid and buy an Alienware. In which case you're just paying for the name. But seriously, in the computing field, price usually shows the difference between one product and another. Obviously one person may not need as much as another, but that doesn't change the facts.

I gotta admit at first I was not that impresed with Crysis 1 then I played Warhead and absolutely loved the game and went back and played Crysis 1 and it grew on me. I still have it installed on my PC:) I hooked my PC up to my 52" 1080P 120hz LCDTV and ran the game at max detail 1920x1080 and amazingly ran very well and looked awesome. I can not wait to give Crysis 2 a try I trust the Developers they made 3 great games Farcry,Crysis and Warhead if they feel the city is a good place i'll takle thier word for it and spend the $$ for 2.

Well said nameaprice. Couldn't have said it better myself. Comparisons without bias are one thing, but evidently that's not the case here. All 3 systems are great and have their pros and cons. We all have our preferences and opinions just try and remember people that they're OPINIONS and are SUBJECTIVE. Personally, I love all 3 systems. I have a good pc and an xbox 360. I'd love to have a ps3 but just can't afford it right now. I just hope this game is as big a technical breakthrough for consoles as it was for pc's back when the original came out. Let's just hope this one has more than just nice visuals though because the first got boring REAL fast.

nameaprice

Bottom line is FPS's are better with a mouse and keyboard, platformers are better with a controller and racing games are better with a steering wheel and pedals setup. graphics will always be better on PC, period, and PC can use mouse/keyboard, controller and steering wheel pedal combo. certain games will always be exclusive to one system or another. so your only real option if you want it all is to in fact get all the systems available. if you cant afford it than tough, get the one that either plays the games or genres you want to play the most. and thats it, nuff said, so stop the complaining and debating!

I agree with vishnugupta96 stop the PC vs Console war or Xbox360 vs ps3 war. they all just have minor differences. Me personally I like playing games on my pc , but its crap and i'm not going to buy a 1500 € pc if i have a ps3 that has the same games for the most part and is connected to a HD beamer in a room with cosy seats. and stereo sound.

Yaranhameleh

@asfand0072006 First of all, the fact you spent money on such a PC is your own problem. Second " PC fps are good, why any of the PC game got 10.0 or Game Of The Year", are you saying that FPS is better on console? If you get used to playing FPS on consoles it might be the same but I am yet to meet ANYONE who said that a controler is better then a keyboard and mouse for FPS. I'm sorry but if you let websites decide whether a game is good for you becuase of the score or awards it got, you are weak.

gbaturin
gbaturin

Why wasn't Crysis released on consoles? Because no amount of optimization would make it playable and viewable at the same time, the tech was just too much for consoles to handle. The best visuals are PC-based, that's a fact. Playing on a console is like using a cropped DSLR, while the PC is the full frame monster. I've got a simple rig: Core 2 Duo E8500@3.8Ghz, 2Gb DDR3@1333Mhz, Geforce 285, and any game I throw at it runs smooth at full HD with nearly max settings. Examine PC gaming visuals up close (compared to consoles) and you'll feel the difference. Draw distance alone is something to wonder at. And I'm not giving up my mouse and keyboard for anything - controllers are useless in any game, especially FPS.

Strickter
Strickter

@asfand0072006 Your problem is you spent a fortune on your pc and I spent less then half that and mine runs any game I play on high. All strategy, fps's and most rpg(mmorpg as well) play better on pc both graphically and control wise. Next time be smart when building your rig so it wont be such a big deal to own more then one console. Match your games up with the console they work best with. I love my pc and after playing strategy and first person shooters on it there is no way i could play them on a console
