Crysis 2 editor dropping this summer

In open letter, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli says PC gamers can get their hands on game editor in the coming months; in August company will release full CryEngine SDK.

Crytek's Crysis 2 shipped in March for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC to much critical praise. It was the first series entry to arrive for consoles, but soon PC gamers looking to be more creative with the shooter will have access to a feature set their console counterparts will not.

Soon you can create that fire.

In an open letter to the PC modding community titled "Be Free…Be Creative…Be the Developer," Crytek CEO and president Cevat Yerli said this summer the developer will release a full-featured editor tool for Crysis 2. The Crysis 2 editor lets gamers create items, maps, and custom content for use in the sci-fi shooter.

Then, in "early August" Crytek will let gamers go deeper and get their hands on the entire CryEngine 3, which powered Crysis 2. With the CryEngine software development kit, gamers will have access to every tool they need to create a game from the ground up, including C++ code access, content exporters, shader code, script and asset examples, and more.

Additionally, Crytek said it will support gamers looking to go the commercial route with what they create. The company said it will offer a "low cost licensing model" for gamers who wish to release their games digitally. Unfortunately, Yerli did not elaborate further on this point.

This is great news for PC Modding Community. So... Bioware, where's your Dragon Age 2 Toolset, huh?

To bad you can't edit the enimies AI. I wish they would develop a patch to fix that.

So if you want dx11 just hire someone to make it for you. Maybe they'll fix the mp too.

Hopefully, the hate that Crytek are receiving for ignoring the PC gamers will start diminishing from this point. As for the free SDK, I really wanna try that out but considering how complex Crysis's editor was to me, I doubt I'll be able to do anything fruitful at all with this SDK. A great opportunity for budding game developers though !!!

I wish I still had a high end pc. I love my ps3 but nothing beats a high end alien ware PC. That editor is going to be awesome. I hope infamous 2 have a decent editor

@NightDrifter05 Wait, how is a map or mission editor impossible on consoles? I recount Far Cry 2 having an excellent map editor, and TimeSplitters having the ability to make missions on custom maps. Of course I don't expect something as complicated as mods to be on consoles. Unless your saying it is due to such things as memory usage and constraints, I may agree with you on that.

shouldn't they be more concerned about developing a dx11 engine?

@CRS98 But if they do that how are charge the console gamers for their map packs? ofc you could say the same about PC gamers but the difference is there are some very talented modders out there for example remember the AC130 killstreak in Mw2? That was actually a mod from MW infinityward borrowed the idea or another example check for a mod called blackmesa which is a fan made total conversion of halflife2 into halflife1 these are the kind of ideas game company like to see so they cam either use them OR hire the mod team which valve has done in the past

I'm waiting for both directx11 and these editor tools. Honestly though I'm quite concerned, anyone think my GTX 460 (2gb) will fry trying to run this on all max (except AA and AF etc.) with dx11?

crysis is the great series that took the innovative thinking to the gamers. with this crytek engine the developers should make different genre games like 3rd person shooter, I am damn sure that game also ROCKS.

it's still abit of ashame that it's going to take until August for the Sandbox SDK to be released... ... and I'd have to disagree strongly with Crysis 2 being a good reference point for what CryEngine 3 can do. As pretty as it may be (and it is), the CryEngine demo footage is way WAY more impressive. Like the destructible environment physics ala Red Faction, or the awesome nuclear shockwave hitting the Crysis 1 tropical island style environment. And of course, the demo footage showed the engine working in DX11. When in doubt skip the game footage and look at www.mycryengine.com

Awesome, this alone removes the console port title that whingers give it. I can only think of a few companies that give full versions of their toolsets, Valve, Bethesda and Epic.

CRS98, It's not likely at all because this type of stuff isn't even possible on a console yet.

I wonder if they'll make it DLC for consoles. Not necessarily mods, but like a map/mission editor.

Nothing special about the editor tool, but access to the Crytek engine is definitely special.

Gaming editor..nice! Crymod.com will be jumping again..this time with Crysis2. Nothing like making your own playable levels, characters, guns etc. So good to have this game on the comp. Just a matter of downloads too ;) lol.

Along with a free download, it would be nice if it was to be bundled with future Crysis 2 retail boxes.

Jaga_Telesin

I'm gonna wager they will release it bundled as part of a GOTY edition. I.e. it will be for sale as part of a retail package. I'd love to be disappointed and see the community get it for free, but that isn't typical. Just have to wait and see..

Wow. I'm not a PC gamer but you don't have to be in order to see that this a great opportunity for many people out there. For all of those that are going to give it their all: I wish you best of luck.

I have to say this is a great news, since it will extend the games life somewhat with mods. Second it wont end up like FarCry 2 .

This is amazing! Allowing people to create games and have them seen by developers is every budding game designers dream. Now if you are really good at programming and the like you have a shot of getting hired or make money off your games instead of having to waste 4+ years at a college getting certified on stuff you already knew how to do.
