Create a 3D figure of yourself using Kinect

New Shapify.me service will deliver a replica model of yourself to your door for $60.

In addition to helping NASA control robotic arms, Microsoft's Kinect camera is now being used to create 3D figurines, thanks to a new Shapify.me service from printing company Artec Group.

For $60, you can make a full-color 3D print figurine of yourself through the service by downloading the Shapify.me software and then scanning yourself via Kinect.

To perform the scan, you'll need to be able to hold the same pose and facial expression for around a minute, as the camera captures you from every side.

You'll need Kinect for Xbox 360 or Kinect for Windows to create a mini-me figurine. The Xbox One's new and improved Kinect camera is not listed as a supported device.

Full details about the Shapify.me service are available at the company's website.

That's pretty cool. I'm actually a little interested in seeing how I'd look.

..............That's actually pretty cool.  But not cool enough to make me buy an X1.

that figurine looks like a version of miley cyrus that someone just removed from their rectum

the model in the photo makes whoever it is modelled from look like they are down syndrome, I wouldn't pay 60 dollars to make myself look like that. no offense to anyone who is down syndrome, I am just telling it how it is.

Now I can voodoo with myself!

I do not like the way I look, and apparently I can't photoshop the 3d model since they don't allow you to save it (which makes the program worthless in my book).  No way am I paying $60 for a plain figure of myself.

yawn.... just another kinect gimmick everyone will be bored of after a couple of weeks. Any man could make their own mini 3d self in any pc game, it is called modding. heck even skyrim modders have done kevin van nord replicas in skyrim lol. how the hell is this innovative?

I hope we will be able to do something similar like this for character creation in games.

I would rather just look in the mirror to my reflection. Free of charge, and actually my figure moves with me in real time!!!! Dayum

it would be good to see the actual women posing for this figurine, at her actual pose. whether or not she looks anything close to that.

Support the Xbox ONE camera, and maybe this will be worth it.

I'm not paying 60 bucks for a figure of me that looks like half-melted playdough.

I am from the Sony camp and I can say this is a pretty neat feature. Don't like it? Don't buy it.

For $60? Come on. These are just crap 3D printer figurines. 3D printing is awesome for making functional things easily but for things like this it is a waste. The figures look like cheap toys you use to get from Red Lobster.

Save your money people. Seriously.

Dont think kinect make in game characters look like you after scanning head and body, just judging from videos of journalists playing kinect sports ive seen. Imagine this would have the same accuracy. First step is kinect scanning and portraying a person well. If they can do it right though i would want one

That's actually really awesome. I know all the software devs would have one at their desks.

Finally we get to make a 3d model of ourselves, fix our junks and racks and look in despair. Dream come true.......

yeah...sooo many reasons why this could be a very bad idea...

on the flip side, I wonder how they will deal with a cosplayer scanning themselves to get a figurine of the character they're cosplaying?

@Boddicker  .....if you read further it said kinect for 360 or kinect for windows

@Aaronp2k Um.. you obviously didn't read it or even look at the picture before you interjected with your ignorant comment. The kinect takes a 3d scan of you, then you can have a FIGURINE made of you via the company's website for like 60 bucks. So no... you can't just do that with ANY pc game. I don't recall playing Borderlands on the pc and it scanning me in 3d and sending a figurine to my door.

@Tylermaxx could not have put it better than that. Like I said, a useless feature for the gimmick microsoft calls kinect. Move aside microsoft, sony have won the war, and it is only a matter of time till linux will also win the war in the pc market.

@hippiesanta 10 years ago the same figurine was 5000 bucks. the printer now costs 1500 , 10 years ago it was 750000. for me (that wanted a 3d printer 10 years ago), it's actually cheap.

@bannedexistence Does Kinect bother you? If you don't like it then don't use it. If Kinect games are of no interest what is wrong with video chats and voice commands

@StarsiderSajun another console fanboy who doesn't understand this technology has been around for ages. fyi a lot of movie-based games have actually ripped the faces from the films and rendered them on character models. any person who is a dab hand at rendering 3d models could just as easily take a photo of themself and render a 3d model of themself for free and then put it in any pc game they want (the joys of modding, something which console does not and will never offer). and best of all, you don't have to spend a penny to do it which brings me to my next point. why the hell would anyone spend 60 dollars just to be able to control a fake version of themself on the tv :S. Pathetic.....

All the kinect camera does is basically take a picture of you from different angles and render a model automatically, or you could just do it yourself for free with your own hd camera and then put yourself in any pc game you want. with kinect you are limited to the mini-games that shapify.me will have to offer (which will suck big time).

Let me give you the short version, this is a huge rip off. kinect is and always will be a gimmick, and xbox one sucks.

Aaronp2k
Aaronp2k

@ZombieGuyGeorge @hippiesanta what if i told you that if you bought the printer you could offer the same service for cheaper and more people would come to you and you would make the money back on the printer and have a free figurine and a shit load of profit?

doesn't seem so cheap now does it.

@Jamex1987 I hate people with your mentality. What you said is basically like saying if u don't like sugar in ur coffee but a place only sells coffee with sugar in it just pretend the sugars not there and drink it. paying for something you don't want always leaves a bitter taste in your mouth.

Amster_G
Amster_G

@Jamex1987 Because we have to pay $499.99 for something we don't want. Remove Kinect, knock off at least $100 and I would personally be interested in getting one myself.

Aaronp2k
Aaronp2k

@DariusMKN @DariusMKN @Aaronp2k Also I must add that if you wanted to make a figurine of yourself, you could still do it via a pc. I have designed shelves, cabinets etc on pc in high school and then the data gets fed through a machine and the machine cuts it out of your choice of material (and I am 25 years old now, just to give you an idea how long this technology has been around). If that technology existed back then, then id wager it'd be possible to make your own figurine using similar software (which is probably what shapify are actually planning on doing). They are charging you 60 dollars for something you could do yourself and all the work is done by computers and delivery men (how else do you think action figures are mass produced?), it is a huge rip-off and I always expect this sort of thing from a company affiliated with microsoft since microsoft also love ripping off their customers.

Would you pay 60 dollars for a he-man action figure which did not even move at all which basically means its not an action figure but in fact a he-man figurine?

Of course not

Then why would you pay 60 dollars for the same thing with your face on it?

Aaronp2k
Aaronp2k

@DariusMKN @Aaronp2k yes, I am not talking about that though am I. I am talking about the people in the comments who are saying this could be used to put people in video games which shapify obviously will do because they know people would be stupid enough to pay to be able to play as them-self in cheap mini-games that would most likely be imitations of the likes of angry birds, temple run and so on.

@Aaronp2k what if i told you that's american price? what if i told you taxes in my country are higher and do not apply? let me show it to you.

printer itself costs $1500, but bringing one to my country adds 35% of border tax, plus 16% of added value tax, plus 15% of luxury item, plus 8% of non-registered commercial product, plus 40% of handling and account on my bank, plus 16% of added value on my bank, plus another 35% of luxury item, plus 24% of paying in cash (or 16% if i pay with check, with an anual rate of 14%).

that's $4335.

so, let's say a material charge is $100 bucks in the us. so, having 4 colors * 4 = 400 bucks a charge for 20 figures, that's 20 bucks. so far, yeah, cheaper. but. with taxes, they come around 300 bucks a charge, id be giving them the exact same $60. but wait. that's with taxes i paid, what about taxes i charge? taxes also apply to me when i sell, so, that's 60bucks + 16% added value, 35% border crossing and 4% of my bank deposit.

that's $93 international price, plus shipping and handling (around $40 in my country) just to get the materials back. if i wanted to have a revenue, i should charge extra. let's round up 133 to 140 (7 bucks a piece revenue). that's 140.

$140 is not cheaper than $60 even with shipping (100 bucks).

actually giving the rate, im giving the government 700% the actual value of the product.

shit load of profit? yeah, if i were government.

now i ask you, doesn't seem so expensive now does it?
