Cops 2170: The Power of Law E3 2004 Preshow Impressions

Blade Runner meets Deus Ex intrigue in this futuristic tactical strategy game.

Cops 2170: The Power of Law is set in a futuristic world that looks like it's a blend of Blade Runner and Deus Ex. Not surprisingly, the game, which blends tactical strategy with role-playing, is set in a dystopian future where technology and the government have run amok.

You'll play as Katy, a young police officer fresh out of the academy. The world that Katy patrols is far different from ours; flying cars and soaring skyscrapers dominate the urban skyline, and technology has advanced to the point that each human being has an embedded microchip that allows the government to keep track of everyone. Meanwhile, a rogue genius has plunged the city into chaos with a series of terror attacks, and it's up to Katy and her fellow officers to determine what is going on.

The game uses an isometric third-person view, which basically means you'll control Katy from a top-down, angled view. She'll run around a virtual city populated by more than 60 non-player characters, and there will be more than 200 nonlinear quests to keep you busy. Some of the NPCs definitely look interesting, including a giant mutant rat who also appears to be a member of the police force.

As a role-playing game, Cops 2170 will offer "limitless" character development possibilities, though details aren't available yet. You will be able to control a variety of vehicles, including police cars and heavy tanks, and you'll have quite an arsenal at your disposal, including sniper rifles, rocket launchers, and machine guns.

Strategy First and Russian-developer Mist Land promise a cyberpunk-culture-heavy storyline and plenty of role-playing and tactical strategy action. You'll be able to put together a team of eight agents, mixing and matching specialties to create a balanced team. Cops 2170 is scheduled to ship around the end of the year.
