Conflict: Global Terror E3 2005

We get hands-on with Conflict: Global Terror at the 2K booth at E3 2005.

The Conflict series of games now has a few titles under its belt, including Conflict: Desert Storm, Conflict: Desert Storm II: Back to Baghdad, and, most recently, Conflict: Vietnam. Conflict: Global Terror is currently listed as being 60 percent complete, and we had an opportunity to get some hands-on experience with it at the 2K booth.

Unlike the previous Conflict games, Conflict: Global Terror features a 100 percent fictional storyline in which your squad of fighters is pitted against a white supremacist organization that's apparently running a worldwide campaign of terror. Since the game takes place in multiple locales, it won't be restricted to a single environment, such as a desert or a jungle. The engine itself has been entirely rebuilt, which apparently yields the most gains on the PlayStation 2 platform. Apparently the team is doing some interesting work with textures on the PS2 so that zooming in on a texture won't result in the blurred details inherent to so many games. Instead, textures will retain their sharpness. The details of how this works wasn't covered, however, and we, in fact, only witnessed the Xbox version of the game.

We happened to get a chance to play through a bit of a co-op demo that was running on a pair of Xboxes. In addition to the split-screen co-op modes of previous Conflict games, Global Terror is also introducing LAN and online co-op for all its supported platforms (the PS2, Xbox, and PC), as well as an all-new, pure multiplayer mode. Again, though, we only saw the co-op. The level we played was apparently located in South Korea, where terrorists had kidnapped the daughter of a US senator. We were sent in, along with another player from 2K, to both rescue her and kill a whole lot of terrorists.

We weren't too familiar with the gameplay controls, so, unfortunately, we weren't exactly great at the game. However, we adapted a pretty good strategy and decided to stay behind the 2K demo person while he went ahead and shot stuff. The level starts out with a difficult entry into a courtyard covered by two stationary machine guns. Since we didn't know they were there, initially, we ran out and got promptly mowed down. The second time we tried the level, we stuck behind our teammate, who managed to destroy the machine guns with grenades, after which we ran into the courtyard...and got promptly cut down by gunfire. So, yeah, the game is apparently fairly difficult.

We are pleased to say that the game does look good and controls fairly well. However, there are plenty of squad-based combat games that feature combat against terrorists and paramilitary organizations, so we'll have to see more of Conflict: Global Terror before we can judge it. Keep an eye on GameSpot for more details as the game approaches release. It's currently listed as having an October 2005 street date.
