SCi has today announced that it will release a GameCube version of Pivotal Games' Conflict: Desert Storm in Europe later this year. The game is set during the Gulf War, and it sees players assuming control of a squad of four British SAS or US Delta Force soldiers as they conduct operations behind enemy lines.
The game is played from a third-person perspective and allows players to switch between squad members at any point during a mission. Each of the squad members is capable of performing a wide variety of tasks but specializes in one area such as electronics, heavy weapons, rifleman, or infiltration and sniper. Knowing how and when to take advantage of each squad member's specialist skills is key to completing the game's 15 missions--particularly if players intend to keep them alive so they can gain experience as they progress through the game.
All the weapons and vehicles in the game are modeled on those that would be used in real life, and the skilled soldiers of Britain and the US are fully trained in the use of anything from the enemy arsenal that they might be able to scavenge on the battlefield.
Today's press release makes no mention of any improvements being made for the GameCube version of Conflict: Desert Storm, which is perhaps a little disappointing, given that the game was originally released around six months ago. A four-player cooperative mode would seem like a fairly obvious addition for a console with four controller ports, although given that the Xbox version supported only two players, it seems unlikely that this will be implemented.
The GameCube version of Conflict: Desert Storm is scheduled for release in Europe in May. The previous versions of the game were published in North America by Gotham Games, which hasn't made any announcements concerning the GameCube version at this time.
