Confirmed: Console Witcher 'on hold'

Production on Xbox 360, PS3 versions of CD Projekt's dark fantasy RPG suspended amid dispute between publisher and developer Widescreen Games.

This week, speculation abounded on the fate of The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 adaptation of CD Projekt Red's well-regarded dark fantasy role-playing game released for PCs in 2007. According to online reports, CD Projekt Red, facing significant financial instability, opted to halt development on the project in order to redirect its resources to The Witcher 2, which was said to be in production for consoles and the PC.

Geralt has an idea on how to end this dispute.

Today, a portion of that speculation entered the realm of fact, as The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf developer Widescreen Games announced that development on the console title has been suspended.

"The development of the game The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf has been suspended in an attempt to resolve financial problems among the various project partners," Widescreen Games manager Olivier Masclef said in statement. "We regret this measure, particularly on behalf of the fans who were impatiently awaiting the release of the game. I hope that we can find an amicable solution with our present and former partners involved in this ambitious project."

However, some dispute has arisen as to why development on Rise of the White Wolf has halted. Speaking with UK gaming blog VG247, Masclef said, "After having a payment being broken by CD Projekt--a big payment that we were supposed to receive--and after having committed to the project but not being covered financially on it for three months, I [had] no choice but to put the team on hold."

At odds with that claim, CD Projekt joint CEO Michal Kicinski defended his company in the comments section of that same article. "It is sad that we cannot talk with WSG in normal business way, but communicate through media," the Warsaw, Poland-based executive wrote. "It is absolutely not our style of making business, and we answer here as we feel forced to do this to clarify the unclear information."

According to Kicinski, CD Projekt paid Widescreen on time for all milestones. However, due to production delays on the part of Widescreen, these payments were "later than originally planned." Kicinski went on to say that even with additional support from CD Projekt Red--better known as the publisher's development arm--Widescreen continued to miss deadlines.

"The most important fact is that development process didn't make planned release date possible, and moreover, propositions of the new release date were changing few times," Kicinski wrote. "Besides the schedule, technical incapability created a risk of missing planned quality, which is absolutely unacceptable. And this brought an end in our cooperation with WSG."

Kicinski concluded by saying that the project is currently "on hold" as CD Projekt evaluates "all possible options to continue the production."

This game is Incredible and I can understand and empathize with CD Projekt wanting to maintain a standard of quality for their product. In recognition of it's cultural significance as a new AAA landmark and franchise, not to mention pop icon in Geralt, I'd totally work on this game for free for you guys. .... if I had a lick of programmer ability or knowledge in me that is, hehe. buuuut that would so not even come close to resolving the deadline issue hah. sigh*

darn shame that. This would have to be the one and possibly only time my impatience has paid off; I starved and sacrificed enough to give my old clunker PC a massive (but still not super ultimate) upgrade just to get my hands on this game. After 4 years of neglect my machine is up and running and I'm currently just trying to sort out some of issues the game has but so far... Totally worth it X) though i could do without the random freezing :( still totally worth it ;]

Anyone polish around here? I guess not, so I am flattered that a polish novel-based game with polish development got so many fans. For those who did not have a chance to read Sapkowski's novel, please do. It's the best fantasy I've read so far. I am still waiting for ps3 version of the witcher. I guess I might wait for the second part.

Canceled? Eff that. I'm so sick of these games with a lot of potential that would be so sweet getting canceled because the developers think they can make money with idiotic flops that teeny-bopper fan-boys will rush to their local electronics retails to get.

I really hope they do what they have to to make White Wolf a console reality. I would never be able to play the original on my PC.

MAN Forget any of the other 'BIG' releases coming out at E3, I was awaiting an awesome showing by CD Projekt and this utter gem. AND NOW!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO....... I only ever played a pc demo of the game, and that was more than enough to wet my apetite.*sight I'll just have to go and get EE on pc then, phooey.

I really do hope this isnt cancelled. Granted I have the PC Enhanced Edition and all but I really want this on xbox. I like the controls better on console when it comes to RPGs.

On hold doesn't mean dead. CD Projekt has enough money invested in this that getting it finished and out the door is almost a necessity. Plus, it will sell a crapload on both consoles.

@ BloodMist The problem is not with the publisher, it has to do with the subcontractor which failed to deliver the console ports in due time.

On the one hand - it's not bad: I enjoy PC-version, but on the other - it's unfortunetely: it's bad than any developer has got finantial and other problems. So, I can't say something definitelyl.

That's good to hear that they're not cancelling it. I enjoy the original PC game but I'm not much of a PC gamer, so the console version is one to look out though for me. Hopeful for a sequel (also better check out the book that the game is based off of).

Love witcher on the PC and hope it will come to the consoles CD Projekt did an amazing job with the enhanced edition, great game and developer.

A real shame, I got it for PC but I can't get into PC RPGs because of the controls so I stopped after some floating city cutscene. I was planning on getting this and finishing the game. I guess that I have enough understanding of the game to read the rest online get the sequel but not a lot of console owners would just get the sequel. @lucebuce, what is your problem? Consoles didnt get pwned, CD project did and now that they can't release a console version they might not have the finances to make the sequel. Making a console version could have been their big break into bigdev land. They deserve it because even though I couldnt deal with the controls the game itself was amazing. A great atmosphere and story, I even got picked up one of the witcher books after I stopped playing.

BloodMist

Hmm, almost sounds like they were just having huge issues with the publisher, who more likely than not were probably wanting them to rush, CDProjeckt's a developer that would never rush a game out.Damned fools.Oh well, maybe they'll get another publisher. If they don't, trust me, the game is worth upgrading for as it's one of the best RPG's ever made, period. Not like it would cost barely anything to do these days anyway unless you're running like a Pentium 2 or something. :P Bring on that sequel.

Ditch the PS3 adaptation would probably save 75% of the porting costs. Then the console version could be achieved!
