Conan O'Brien considered Xbox Live show - Report

Deadline Hollywood reports that prior to today's TBS deal, the former Tonight Show host had "discussions with Microsoft about an Xbox deal."

by

Fans of Conan O'Brien received good news today, when the comedian announced he had struck a deal with TBS for a new show. The as-yet-untitled program will air Monday through Thursday at 11 p.m. starting sometime in the fall on the basic cable channel.

Why should gamers who aren't fans of the flame-haired comedian care? Because O'Brien's team of handlers at one point reportedly considered bringing his show to Xbox Live. Showbiz blog Deadline Hollywood reports that "there were discussions with Microsoft about an Xbox deal for Conan's show that would have broken new ground." No further details were offered.

An Xbox Live Conan O'Brien show might have looked a little like this.

Conan O'Brien's new show will push TBS's increasingly popular talk show Lopez Tonight to 12:00 a.m.--with the host's full consent, apparently. "I can't think of anything better than doing my show with Conan as my lead-in," George Lopez said in a statement. According to the New York Times, Lopez actively recruited O'Brien, calling him personally over the course of the rapidly negotiated deal.

O'Brien's hesitation to displace an established program can be easily understood. It was NBC's forced rescheduling of the Tonight Show to 12:05 a.m. that prompted the comedian to leave the network earlier this year. The move was done to accommodate a new show by former Tonight Show host Jay Leno, whose move into primetime proved a ratings disaster. Leno has since resumed hosting the Tonight Show at 11:30 p.m.

Today, O'Brien kicked off his Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour, a reference to the non-compete clause in his separation contract from NBC. That settlement garnered him at least $32 million in penalty payments--which he reportedly shared with his staffers who lost their jobs as part of the move.

Many of those same staffers will be working on O'Brien's TBS show, which will be produced in Los Angeles, where O'Brien and his staff relocated after leaving NBC's Late Night, now hosted by Jimmy Fallon. Fallon has taken the show in an even more youthful direction, even using it to host game premieres such as tonight's preempted unveilings of Gears of War 3 and Bulletstorm.

ah well I think Cliffy B made one of the biggest steps forward with a AAA game title being revealed on a major network show

You know your career is on a downward spiral when you go from the Tonight Show to contemplating doing a XBL show.

Yay for Conan. An XBL show would have been good.

I would watch Conan on XBL. I'm not a huge fan, but, Dave stopped being funny in the 1980's, and Craig Ferguson is the only one worth watching now. I'm glad Conan is coming back.

Considering I will NEVER own or use CABLE, OTA, or SATTELITE again, its a shame, cause I would've been all over this on XBL. It's the ONLY thing I watch (via netflix). Zune is a RIP OFF, sorry MS. Too little, too late. all my sports (baseball and football) i watch online for free via streaming. I've saved thousands since canceling my subscriptions 5 years ago (thanks to DTV's beyond horrible customer service). And OTA? Well, even with Fox broadcasting 6 miles from my house (im rural), I still get 0 % digital signal....

It woulda ruled to have an uncut show on HBO, but man, who cares, it's gonna be wonderful when Conan finally comes back, and late night gets funny again. He's even taking the awful Lopez Show's spot, that's just a nice bonus.

I still hope he does the 360 gig, that would be a huge change in TV programming.

It's so funny that they're trying to bash NBC when it was Conan's own fault for his horrible drop in ratings. Conan was not producing good ratings at all. If you don't have good ratings you get the boot (or move), it's TV business and should be understandable. If that wasn't the case then we'd all be stuck with crappy programs on TV and non-funny people like Conan O' Brian, who most did not like until people got sentimental of the way he got bumped. And thank god he's not on Xbox LIVE, because he really aint that funny! lol..and who actually watches boring TBS?

@Stray: It was Conan's management team who wanted a show on XBL and contacted MS, not the other way around. Please read the article before commenting.

Well it's cool that MS wanted to hire Conan but I think it would be a big mistake for him. It's good that he's coming back to television.

Jimmy Fallon sucks. Conan would be the only person that could actually succeed on an Xbox Live show.

OmegaTau: I'm not going to begin to understand why you think you know what went down between Conan O'Brien, his agent, and Microsoft reps for Xbox Live. I will, however, say that I am a part of the "Xbox Live Generation", meaning that I own a 360, I have XBL, and I also like Conan O'Brien. I also hate Jimmy Fallon. I think he's terrible. He can't make it through one of his own Goddamn jokes without laughing at himself. Quit trying to act like you know everything, jackass. Assumption is the mother of all mistakes.

lol yeah conan considered it all right agent: um coco, got a call from MS about doing a xboxlive show Conan: lmfao, hell no agent: "hangs up the cell phone.". I guess people think that is considering now all he did was tell them no.

If facebook and whatever else can take up unnecessary space on xbl, why not let Coco take up some space? I can only support Conan taking some cracks at the video game culture. I'm all for it.

Good to hear he's making his way back! Conan will always have a warm place in my heart right next to Andy Richter...

I'm sorry but going from a show on late night TV to XBL would be a huge step down. People get on XBL for games predominately. You don't see Major Nelson getting TV offers. I'm sure Conan "considered" this for about 5 seconds.

Funny, if Lopez then later want his hour back , and TBS says sorry to Conan. it sounds like a curse .

Since I don't have cable I'm hoping TBS comes to Hulu if they don't give him full episodes on their website. Not uncommon.

Sparticus1013

Some kind of internet based program, XboxLive or otherwise, might not have been a bad idea for Conan. It's the exact audience he's trying to attract, who supported him through "Lenogate". Still, TBS is a reasonable alternative.
