Company of Heroes 2's Russian distributor suspends sales

Distributor 1C-SoftClub halts sales of RTS after numerous gamers voice concerns over portrayal of Soviet Union; publisher Sega "investigating these concerns."

After numerous Russian Company of Heroes 2 players expressed issues with the game's portrayal of the Soviet Union in World War II, the game's distributor in the region--1C-SoftClub--has halted sales of the RTS, according to a post on its website (via Videogamer).

The distributor said it was in the midst of raising these concerns to publisher Sega, which itself released a statement on the matter to GameSpot this afternoon.

"Sega and Relic are aware of the press stories circulating concerning Company of Heroes 2 and the historical context of the game from a Russian perspective," reads a line from the statement.

"At this time we cannot offer any further comment, however we are taking this issue very seriously and are investigating these concerns thoroughly with all relevant partners."

Some gamers have taken issue with Company of Heroes 2 and developer Relic Entertainment for perceived Western bias. A Change.org petition has been launched calling on Valve to remove the game from Steam in Commonwealth of Independent States to "protect the young people from that propaganda."

Meanwhile, some user reviews for Company of Heroes 2 have expressed a similar level of anger about the game's subject material. "I've never saw a game about the Great Patriotic War that has such big amount of lie and twisting of the historical facts," reads a line from one review.

"No history, no truth," reads another.

Company of Heroes 2 launched at the end of June and sold 380,000 copies in five days. For more, check out GameSpot's review.

What with all the "OMG USA Propaganda", it doesn't seem like much commentors realize Relic is Canadian...

The game just parrots the inaccuracies in the movie Enemy at the Gates because game developers have a hard on for movies and treat them as historical documents.  Movies have an inordinate impact on the public psyche about historical events and far too many people base their views on ridiculously distorted movies.  BTW, it's sad many games outright plagiarize from movies and get away with it, but that's another topic.

The Nazis invaded the USSR in 1941, that's when the disorganized mass retreats resulting in 3,000,000 captured, logistical shortages and brutality on the part of Soviet officers happened, until the Red Army counterattacked, stopped the Germans in front of Moscow and threw them back.

By 1942 when this game takes place, the Red Army had learned how to counter German tactics, make strategic withdrawls resulting in far lower prisoner counts, and their shortened supply lines and war production increases left them in a much better position.  Historians credit tenacity and resolve for the defense of Stalingrad and the ultimate German catastrophe, not brutality.

Everyone knows Stalin's regime were no saints, and two completely brutal regimes faces off on the Eastern Front in WW2, but this game is a mockery of history.  If you want accuracy, read the books "The Retreat" and "Total War" by Michael Jones.

omg really?  the russians committed enough attrocities in their time - world war 2 was full of them  they shot their own soldiers for god sake.  i cannot imagine a made-up war crime any worse than what was actually committed.  but that russia is old, gone, part of the past.  the new russia is entirely different with different people, etc... I think they would be well served to ignore this issue entirely

This game story line is an insult to more than one nation. I do not find this entertaining at all.

I do not want my kids playing this and I WANT MY MONEY BACK!

I suggest to all educated people to RETURN this game and demand your money back.

I am seriously thinking about talking to my lawyer as I feel deeply insulted,  being a Canadian immigrant with Russian/Polish background.

I believe the Templars are still pretty annoyed about how they are portrayed in the Assassin's Creed series too.

Medal of Honor (2010) also got some criticism for its choice of setting and how they portrayed it, but really, this is a game. It's not a documentary, it's not a book intending to reveal the true story about the war - it's a freakin' game! It brags about its historical context and realism and all that, but it's not meant to be taken seriously. You could argue that Sega and Relic could have done this better and avoided all this, but going about it like this is ridiculous.

If this goes on, we can't have any games in any real countries, but it doesn't end there. The, by necessity, made up countries will also be accused of being a thinly disguised portrayal of this or that country. People will always see similarities and jump to conclusions based on those. People can't just take something for what it is, they always have to compare and "reveal" the true source, even when the comparisons and conclusions don't make sense.

EA will stop making medal of honor from now on.. i guess the reason is people disliked it thats all...

These Russians must be new to gaming, seriously tons of games use Russians or Russia as the enemy.

@Morphine_OD @nekit-nsk I do not "vatnil", and whether or not this subject can be a long time to learn ... USSR did many bad things, but why show only the bad? The Wehrmacht did not show such a bad hand in the games! The case is in nenavesti to Russia from the West ... I did not understand what causes it

@Morphine_OD @nekit-nsk I'm neutral about Putin ... and do not breed here such a dialogue, it's a different discussion! and do not need to insult! paranoid!

@jhonMalcovich which makes the order 227 less monstrous? sorry, but no. You have no idea how it was to live then and you don't have any rights to criticize.

jhonMalcovich
jhonMalcovich

@Morphine_OD @jhonMalcovich Why it was monstrous ? Were americans able to run away from battlefields ? Or can an American soldier flee a firefight in Afganistan and stay unpunished ?  I guess when a soldiers panicks and flees the battlefield, he´s greeted and awarded in the armies of other countries.

I guess, in American army, treason is not punished by death penalties and life sentences.

@Morphine_OD @jhonMalcovich Well, to my limited knowledge order 227 issued on July 28, 1942 is considered infamous because it created penal battalions and barrier troops to shoot retreating forces. This is indeed a desperate act, but what most people seem to forget is that the requirement for Armies to maintain companies of barrier troops was withdrawn after just three months, on October 29, 1942. Intended to galvanise the morale of the hard-pressed Soviet Army and emphasise patriotism, it had a generally detrimental effect and was not consistently implemented by commanders who viewed diverting troops to create barrier units as a waste of manpower, so by October 1942 the idea of regular blocking units was quietly dropped. By 20 November 1944 the blocking units were officially disbanded.

Morphine_OD
Morphine_OD

@Axiom93 if you did play the game, you'd probably know that retreating soldiers are killed only when an NKVD official is present at the camp, rendering the whole order 227 implementation in CoH2 as close to the real deal as possible.
