Command & Conquer creators announce new RTS Grey Goo

Westwood Studios veterans promise classic real-time strategy concepts with modern design.

by

Developer Petroglyph has announced it’s working on Grey Goo, a new real-time strategy game that blends established gameplay mechanics with modern design and tools.

Petroglyph says Grey Goo will draw on the best aspects of base building, unit management, and all-out war in an all new space saga. It promises to remove the frustration often associated with the genre and focus on deep, tactical systems based on classic RTS gameplay.

The game will feature three factions: The Beta, Human, and Goo, each with its own strategies and powerful “epic” units that tower over the battlefield, which you can play in either a single-player campaign or competitive multiplayer mode. Grey Goo’s AI, Petroglyph said, is based on real-world Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) concepts, and will make every match unique rather than run off of scripts.

“We have a rich, lengthy background as RTS developers, dating all the way back to our time on the original Command & Conquer at Westwood Studios,” Executive Producer at Petroglyph Ted Morris said. “We want to bring back some of what made those ‘traditional’ RTS games great while addressing all the lessons we've learned along the way.”

Grey Goo will release on PC via Steam this fall

Pass, how about an actual next-gen C & C instead?

one day a company named EA thought that RTS games need NO base building... or resource collecting or actual strategy.... they thought:

OH why do we need all this!!! cant we just take money from people and tell them FU?!!!

and so EA single handed DESTROYED the RTS franchise, they just murdered C&C and RA in one full swop ... in fact EA pretty much made people so sick from their shitty RTS games that everyone just stopped making them

all hope was lost, but now a light shines from the rubble EA has created and the RTS phoniex will rise from the ashes of EA's greedy incompetence

Looks good on the surface, but lets see if it has any depth and interesting gameplay!

Last decent C&C RTS i played was C&C Generals: Zero Hour. From there it was all 100% downhill for the C&C franchise. TBH i'm definitely missing good RTS which would include old-school RTS elements with both base building and units, but would also implement modern looks and some new elements.

I am excited about this.

I absolutely loved Command & Conquer, up until C&C4, and RA3.  (Generals was meh)

That franchise is one of the main reasons I am a pc gamer today!

If most of the team that made those games are working on a new RTS IP, then I am excited to see what comes of it.

Side note: I want underwater base building RTS, with combat in a game.  How can such a ripe setting, be so absent from gaming!?!?!

If they can make an RTS that doesn't require such extreme multitasking, I'm in. My problem with Starcraft was always that I had to manually create every unit and building, all while coordinating strikes with only up to twelve units selected at a time. Supreme Commander was a huge improvement with its heavy automation, but I'd still get caught having to micromanage my units, causing me to lose track of the big picture.

I'd love an RTS that combines the combat of Supreme Commander with the thoughtfulness of turn-based games. I think that it'd make the combat more tactical and less rush and zerg centered.

This looks interesting, i'll be looking for more info on this.

Good to see that the godfathers of the genre will bring something new to the scene. It has been a really long time since a great RTS has hit the market.

Looking great for RTS games, Eugene is also making another classic RTS succeeding Act of War, called Act of Aggression, aside from their Real Time Tactical game Wargame Red Dragon. Also Planetary Annihilation.

SW: empire at war and universe at war were good imo and after the debacle that end of nations was, they need some good publicity, though I think that "grey goo" is a somewhat silly name.

When I hear Grey Goo , I think of a sequel to World Of Goo. Not a hardcore RTS.

What the hell, an article that is actually interesting and worth reading instead of the endless stream of conole war bait.

Only just heard about it. Autumn seems a little early, but that screenshot looks more advanced than an alpha.

So they wanted something like Tiberium, but that copyright was sold out to EA, who did nothing great with it and some things fucking terrible (Tiberium Alliances, C & C 4) Despite the name, it looks really interesting.

Frank Klepacki, Audio Director, Petroglyph. It's been so long since a true C & C OST.

AI based on real-world Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) concepts. Does this mean actual decent AI instead of the shit from EA?

The online system for Generals and Tiberium Wars was garbage dumped on to that archaic and now finally dead Shitspy system, which had the same bugs unfixed since 2003 or earlier. A PROPER multiplayer system with a FULL array of features like Red Alert 2 is needed. Possibly random map as well. A map editor keeps games like this going a long time.

Bring walls back, possibly add tank traps and give barbed wire the anti infantry feature it needs.

If you can deliver and expand on everything from the previous good games this could finally be it, a true PC game that is finally worth buying at full price, it's been 3 years...

*drools* the red alert series was sooo sick. Started playing at like 4 years old. Like a baby strategist general.

Hope this can live up to expectations

Sounds like they're just getting rid of macro altogether. Meh.

Hopefully this will become a good RTS game with a good single-player campaign. I enjoyed Warcraft, Warcraft 2. Starcraft, & Warcraft 3.

I did not like Starcraft 2. It felt too evolutionary, like a mash of Starcraft & Warcraft 3. Starcraft 2 story was too repetitive or similar to Blizzard's previous RTS games. The gameplay was also very evolutionary, when I expected something revolutionary like the jump from Warcraft 2 & Starcraft to Warcraft 3. The science fiction ideas in Starcraft 2 were also trite. I think Blizzard played it too safe with Starcraft 2 to please its South Korean fans.

I think Blizzard should do a better job of differentiating between Warcraft & Starcraft. Make the stories more different. Introduce more international mythology & magic into Warcraft, & introduce more cutting-edge science fiction into Starcraft. Warcraft should focus on squad battles (like ~10 units vs ~10 units), while Starcraft should focus more on division battles (like ~300 units vs ~300 units). Gameplay should be tailored for each game, too.

Homeworld was another superb RTS with full 3-D movements. Homeworld 2 offered improved gameplay with its two different factions, but the story was worse than the first one.

Greygoo is not a good name. I probably see another new game name on it.  I already missed the Command & Conquer General 2. :(

@vadagar1  Yeah, blame EA! Because they're the only company making RTS games! Boo to them, for wanting to try something else with the genre! How dare they!

@Oggy1985 Tiberium Wars wasn't half bad, especially if you had the Tiberium Essence mod then it was downright jermazing

@wizzzer_thy_133 I think it's some kind of liquid or nano tech faction which destroys everything in it's path. (according to the Grey Goo theory I found on wikipedia:D )

@Lach0121 While not strictly an RTS, look at Anno 2070 for underwater base building elements

@MAD_AI  Looking forward to Planetary Annihilation, but I also enjoyed the original Act of War. The second one was quite buggy especially on newer rigs with more than 1gb of VRAM, even with a virtual memory fix.

I didn't know about Act of Aggression, so its supposed to be like a spiritual successor to Act of War?  I may have to check this out.  Thanks for the heads up.

I have, and it isn't what I am looking for.

Hardly any combat, and it is more of a sim style game. I want RTS. But I appreciate your try, there is literally no game in that genre!

@creepshow2

Yes let me give them a call right now to let them know how disapointed I am and while Im at it I'll let them know how much Tiberium Twilight sucked and to release Westwood from the dungeon.
