Comic scribe to pen Area 51 film

Grant Morrison tapped to bring Midway's xenophobic shooter series to the silver screen.

The future of Midway's Area 51 franchise is shaping up to be appropriately alien. Midway Austin's upcoming multiplatform shooter BlackSite: Area 51 is being developed under the eye of Harvey Smith (Deus Ex), who's not shying away from mixing politics with gaming, something of a taboo in mainstream game development.

Now film industry trade magazine Variety is reporting that highly regarded and unconventional comic author Grant Morrison has been charged with writing the screenplay for Paramount Pictures' big-screen version of the game.

While Morrison has met with success in recent years for his revamps of long-standing superhero groups in the pages of JLA and New X-Men, he has also been unafraid to take his stories into politically controversial waters in untraditional titles like Animal Man and The Invisibles.

According to Variety, the movie will follow a viral outbreak at the titular top-secret military base and an outside investigator hired to determine if the disease is in fact alien in origin. No release date has been announced for the movie.

What's with all these Video Game movies lately? Oh well, at least most of them aren't being directed by H.S. Anderson or Uwe Boll, but instead being directed by halfway decent directors.

Please, please keep Uwe Boll away from this.

Grant Morrison is an amazing writer, but boy is this ever a strange choice of projects.

I still don't know what an anti-war, anti-military hippie like Harvey Smith is doing overseeing a game like this. A game that has to do with "War" and the military, but of course can't resist some good old political correctness.

why must movie producers tarnish the reputation of games?

Whhhy? Couldn't they come up with their own Area 51 movie? Though the premise does sound interesting

unless he has a card up his sleeve, the whole viral thing is done to death.

Grant Morrison is a good fit because his stories border on X-Files type strange. But no one wants to see ANOTHER video game movie about a virus.

Another game/film tie-in, unoriginal and shamelessly pathetic money spinner !

Has this game been released? Because I see a release date of Q3 2007...

Grant Morrison definitely has the skills at writing, no doubt...Read any of his runs in a series for proof of that. My hope is that Hollywood BS doesn't ruin things by letting suits that more then likely never read his stuff or ever played the game have too much influence over his content. The right amount of outside influence would be about zero, IMO. -=x

So are they gonna bring back David Duchovny from the game? He needs work more than Mr. T.

area 51 wasnt a great game, so whether the movie is good or bad it won't hurt it's reputation, but i guess movie tickets are gonna cost more than a few quarters

You can have an amazing writer, but if you get crummy actors, you'll still have a bad movie.

I can't possibly imagine any studio execs "getting" anything that Morrison submits, unless he completely tones down his style to write something mainstream. And if he does that, then... what's the point of getting Grant Morrison!? I'd much MUCH rather see a movie version of The Filth or an HBO miniseries of The Invisibles. Oh, well. Maybe if HBO doesn't screw up the Preacher miniseries, there might be a future for something like that.

If it's done well, no one will know it was based on a video game plotline...heh.

Grant Morrison is one of the most amazing writers ever. I hold him in higher regards than Frank Miller. I'm not concerned at all with the script but more along the lines of a director and producer who DO have the potentional to screw this up.

I'm guessing this is being based on the mediocre PC/console FPS version of Area 51, not the original arcade light-gun game...

dude...no. Screw the freakin' "Viral Outbreak" bull. GET A NEW CONCEPT! Look at what happened to Doom? What a flop, because it didn't follow what Doom's story was (Teleportation devices gone wrong). Now I'm not exactly sure the original story behind Area 51 (arcade shooter version, favorite game), nor do I remember the later version (with the guy from X-Files). I don't recall such an outbreak. Can't they just have freakin' aliens come in and go "Boo! This is our planet now" and just happen to be in Area 51? THen have like a couple guards who were on patrol at the time be the heroes? Come on...

Nah, knowing Grant Morrison's body of work, it will be a viral meme that causes people watching softcore porn on Cinemax to begin to mutate into aliens. The plot will be discovered by a transgendered teenager living in Montana who sees the evil encoding while squinting at the scrambled channel trying to sneak a peek at porn.

Grant Morrison is a very good writer, he'll be the only chance this movie gets to be worth a damn. To bad his source material is kinda of questionable and everyone know how video game movies do.

I have a feeling the movie is going to be like the resident evil movies and doom movie, it will suck :(.
