Comic-Con 2014: The Last of Us Movie Could Star Game of Thrones' Arya Stark

A possible actress for the role of Ellie was named today during a panel at Comic-Con.

We already know a movie based on The Last of Us is in the works, and we now know a candidate to play the female lead: Maisie Williams, best known for her portrayal Arya Stark on Game of Thrones, could star as Ellie.

Williams' name was cited by Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann--who is set to write the film's script--during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con today. Sam Raimi, the director of Spider-Man and The Evil Dead, was confirmed as a producer on the film; he was previously known to be involved, but his exact role was not.

The prospect of Williams playing Ellie was brought up on Twitter back in April. This resulted in Williams herself responding, "100% would not say no. Ever." Druckmann replied, "[T]hat makes two of us." Bruce Straley, co-lead on The Last of Us, joined in, adding, "Am I allowed to be a third wheel to YES this?!"

The 17-year-old Williams has not yet been signed to play Ellie, so you shouldn't take it as a given that she will star alongside whomever ends up playing Joel.

Druckmann described the film earlier this year as an "adaptation" of the game's story. "As far as where we go and how we make it fit into a film, how it takes into account the unique properties of film... We're not sure yet," he said. "We're only just scratching the surface."

Those who have played The Last of Us will know that, at age 17, Williams is several years older than Ellie in the games. The game version of Ellie is played by 30-year-old Ashley Johnson, though obviously age is less of a consideration when doing voiceover and motion-capture work.

We'll get the chance to see what it's like to experience The Last of Us in a different format on Monday. Johnson, along with Troy Baker (who plays Joel in the games) and several other voice actors will do a live performance of select portions of the game just prior to the release of The Last of Us Remastered for PlayStation 4 on Tuesday.

Who would you like to see cast in the roles of Ellie and Joel? Let us know in the comments.

i think its best if they bring back the original  characters. they played it off so well in the game and they will in the movie.  they did so good in the live performance proving that they are up for the big screen. and im not just talking about they main protaginists, i mean all of the characters that had meaning in the story. including bill, sam, henry, tommy, marlene, and david. and even the short 5 minute scene of sarah. i feel because of the live show there should be no reason not to. it will be great

i think it would be best if the original characters came back. because they have the most experience when it comes to playing this specific role.

i think they should bring back the original characters. like troy baker and all of them. its probably the best choice because they have the most experience when it comes to playing those specific characters. and im talking about all of them. including the people who were playing sam, sarah, tommy, bill and henry. they all played it off perfectly in the game so i think it would be best if they were the ones who played them in the movie

It could work. She shared this dynamic with the Hound already in GoT. But I'd prefer it be someone else, someone who looks more like Ellen.. I mean Ellie.

I would also love to see Carrie Ann Moss as Tess!

I would love to see David Morrissey play Joel or Tommy! He's one of the best actors out there, and with him being in the walking dead he's already got the accent down and everything! I think he'd be your best bet, but that's my personal opinion!

As long as they don't put Ellen Page in it I'll be happy.

Nooooo .. the should sign Chloe Grace Moretz as Ellie !!!! .. she's perfect for the role !!!! SERIOUSLY SONY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER CHLOE !!!

Her Roles in Kick-Ass, Carrie and all her other films prove that she has what it takes to play Ellie, and she's really mature just like Ellie is.

I think she would be great for this role, despite being just slightly too old. Hollywood often casts people to play a character that is younger than they really are, and it works out fine. Just as an example, Emma Stone played a high schooler in Easy A at the age of about 22 and I dont recall anyone complaining that she was too old for that role.

Maisie Williams is just too old now to play Ellie, she is sophisticated, older and huge (huge screen presence <wink>) now. Nothing wrong in that but I am so tired of half ass games to movies . To give Ellie that vulnerability, changing to independence it needs to be played by a younger star. Like Mackenzie Foy from The Conjuring and Twilight who is now 14 and would be 15-16 by the time the movie was shot. Williams would have just been fine years ago. I really hope they would take a movie version of this game seriously and not cast Justin Beiber as Joel or justin timberlake, But put in real stars like Viggo Mortensen or micheal fastbender as Joel. The whole time I played the game I thought what a great movie it would make., but not one if they are not going to take it serious.

If they make a movie from Tomb Raider and it "works", with a story so powerful like this one, nothing can stop to be a blockbuster.

Rick Grimes or Nikolaj Coster-Waldau or Jason Clarke.

Movie tie-ins are usually appalling, and considering that The Last of Us was very average I dread to think how this film will turn out.....

Sony does more tv stuff than MS now... They should be using that money, which they don't have a lot of, to make vita games

Won't this be like watching a rerun even when you see it for the first time? Everybody knows the story. It's also very cliché for the people who haven't played the game or watched the story on YouTube so, I've no idea why they would make a movie about it. Everyone knew the story of The Lord of the Rings before the movies came out but, it was a one of a kind trilogy. TLOU's story line has been portrayed in movies dozens of times already.

I don't think this movie is gonna be even nearly as good as the game, but we will see; BTW, It could probably work better if it was a TV/netflix/whatever show, with 4 or 8 episodes, 1/4 of it could cover the events in each season.

PLEASE don't kill the story like Hollywood did with Resident Evil.

For Joel: William Hurt, Brad Pitt, Josh Broiling, Dennis Quaid and Mel Gibson.

Foe Ellie: You have the right one!

I really hope they don't get really mainstream actors for the main characters, (I'm ok with Arya, she might be good). But if they get a Tom Cruise type to play Joel it will just kill it, they can't let it become too 'Hollywood'.

@blake3isabella That's who she looked like to me. Whenever I saw her face, I thought of CAM.

@jenovaschilld They can age up the character. They did this for all the kids in GoT. Dany is meant to be 14. The actor was 24 I think.

@CaptainSam Or you know, the guy who looks like him... Gerrard Butler from 300. The beard looks the same!

@wildcharms Depending on what you mean by ruin it, well there's always a good chance it will get ruined :).  Movies from games almost always suffer from the same problem, from the perspective of fans of the game anyway, and that is they are usually made to appeal to a much larger audience, not so much to the game's fans.

shadiezz2012

@wildcharms i don't like this

what makes TLOU a masterpiece is that it mix great story with great gameplay  which is pretty rare in video games

and it's 20 hours long game

how they gonna make a story about it in just 2 hours ?!

bigruss730

@bdrtfm The game was average so I dread to think what the film will be like.....

@adsparky That's a brilliant idea. I can picture this working and actually being good

@verum_sol those are all terrible choices he has to be middle aged big and brawny
brad, dennis, mel, and william are all almost 60 or older  which makes them 20 years older then joel and less physical.  Josh is like the only one who would kind of fit the part i don't think his voice and personality fit.  My choice would be joe manganiello just needs some more grey in his hair.

jenovaschilld

@lostn @jenovaschilld Aging up some characters for game of thrones battle scenes I could understand considering the GoT backdrop is so huge with casts of characters longer then several tv shows, but with Ellie being the 1 of 2 main stars of the game with almost the entire plot formed around Ellie youth, innocence, and vulnerability that is foreground to the post-apocalyptic world and Joel himself - putting in an older woman would be hard to see, I think. I mean imagine harry potter starting off at 21 pre grad school.

CaptainSam
CaptainSam

@jenovaschilld @CaptainSam I agree with you. But when say it "works" i refer on boxoffice, imagine that! The world gone crazy or what! But with the dramatic story of Las of Us, i expect great things, great director, great cast, great story line. So i hope they don't mess this up, Naughty Dog fans don't deserve that.

CaptainSam
CaptainSam

@lostn @CaptainSam It´s a joke right?! They all have beard, ok i get it! But the i choose this actors by there awesome dramatic roles not for the beard.

YES dont ya think will be amazing...or you can just pick ONE!

CaptainSam
CaptainSam

@lostn @CaptainSam Yep like Hugh Jackman looks like the 5 ft Wolverine. If they cast actors to match the appearance of the character, the final result is always crap.

lostn
lostn

@CaptainSam @lostn If X-men was crap, it was crap for a range of reasons, not Huge Jackman. You're conflating correlation with causation.

If an actor looks the part, and does a good job then what is causing it to be crap? I can't understand what law there is that says if an actor looks like the character they are playing then it must always be crap. What is it about their accurate appearance that causes the movie to be crap? Really, give me the causal link.

CaptainSam
CaptainSam

@lostn @CaptainSam In my opinion X-men movie was not a crap "au contraire" was not a crap by the fact that they had good performances and not for the appearance of the actors, i have to say that. Casual Link = Street Fighter and there incredible look alike actors/video game characters, don't misunderstand me, SF the movie was/is the ultimate crap.

lostn
lostn

@CaptainSam @lostn If you're referring to the SF movie with JCVD, none of the actors looked the part. But bringing up one example or two only shows a correlation. It does not establish a causation unless you can explain why it is someone looking like a character will make the movie crap. The movie can be crappy for any range of reasons.
