Comic-Con 2014: Far Cry 4 Contest Winner Will Play the Game on Everest

If you've ever wanted to travel the world, hike the Himalayas, and play a video game at the same time, Ubisoft is going to take you there.

During a Far Cry 4 panel at this year's San Diego Comic-Con event, the developers announced an interesting contest: one person will get the chance to play Far Cry on Mount Everest.

The winner will use a specialized (but unspecified) piece of gaming hardware that both allows for playing on the go while also standing up to the harsh weather conditions of the icy mountains. [Note that a game has made the trek up Everest before; it was a DS, as detailed on this NeoGaf thread from 2005]

Ubisoft is looking for hardcore Far Cry fans, but the rules are straightforward: Upload a YouTube video explaining why you're the most qualified for the trek, and include "Far Cry 4 Quest For Everest" in the title.

Rules and restrictions for the contest can be found on the Ubisoft Quest for Everest site.

Is this like one of those contests you don't want to win?  Like the lottery where the prize is being stoned to death?

Nintendo already planted its flag on Everest... Funny thread to read really lol

I'd like the view but personally I don't think I'd climb the mountain... Also Ubisoft said it wanted to change Far Cry's Dudebro image(at least I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere), isn't this like the ultimate dudebro moment in gaming? Pretending to be extreme while your Sherpa guides do all the climbing for you...

I wonder how long exposure to the oxygen deprivation and cold will last before they say "F*ck it lets just have a look at this view and get our asses back down."

Ubirep: Now remember to focus on the camera and the game, the environment you can watch on Youtube when you get home! Smile!

If I was up there and they handed me the controller I would throw that thing right off the mountain and tell the handlers to forget about their job and take a look around. But it seems they covered their bases by requiring that you play the game WHILE you hike up the mountain. This contest is perfect social commentary.

Himalayan 1: what are these people doing here?

Himalayan 2: i hear it's some kind of promotion for a new video game

Somewhere in the world, there will be a guy waiting to cross 'Play videogame on Mt Everest' off his Bucket List.

I thought Everest was still closed for business??

I'm assuming by "on Everest" they mean going to a point on the mountain that can meet the minimum requirements of being "on" the mountain. There's no way they'd go for the top. It wouldn't be great PR for them to kill off the contest winner and leave their frozen body up there with a mobile gaming PC frozen in their hands.

If I win, do I HAVE to play a video game on Mt Everest? Can't I just enjoy the actual place and play the game when I get home?

That's crazy. Not sure it makes sense, but still pretty awesome.

@clapperl Who said anything about climbing?  They will probably ascend to a vertical height of 50 meters.

@dannydopamine8 First time I've ever seen the statement "from the comfort of my..." end that way, rather than the usual reference to furniture or home or something :).

@catsimboy Yeah most likely :).  I still think you need to be in somewhat decent shape for even that minimal point.

Even if they only take you to the minimal point it would be an awesome trip. The things you would see on the way and at the foot of the mountain would probably be very damn cool. Plus, free trip! At the very least it's a new experience.
