Comic-Con 2011: Mortal Kombat Legacy comes to a close

Mortal Kombat Legacy, the popular Web series that started life as an unofficial teaser and ignited the MK community, comes to a close tonight.

by

Despite the fact that the game shipped in April of this year, the Mortal Kombat universe still had plenty of new things in store for its fans at the San Diego Comic-Con--namely Mortal Kombat Legacy, the Web series that, much like the critically acclaimed game, brought the franchise to a new generation of fans.

Michael Jai White as Jax.

The series, directed by Kevin Tancharoen, began life as an atmospheric "teaser" trailer that was a labor of love cobbled together guerilla style by Tancharoen and powered by favors and a shoestring budget. The resulting clip ignited the Internet with speculation of a new movie and massive amounts of buzz that eventually enabled Tancharoen to get funding for Mortal Kombat Legacy. The project became an innovative nine episode Web series that continued the style featured in the teaser, which took a gritty real-life approach to the MK lore.

Over the course of the eight episodes, Tancharoen and the celebrity cast, including Michael Jai White, Jeri Ryan, Darren Shahlavi, Matt Mullins, Sam Tihia, Joolene Tran, Ryan Robins, Ian Anthony Dale, and Kevin Ohtsii, brought the franchise's iconic characters to life in surprising ways. The ninth and final episode brings the series to an explosive close as the origin of two of the franchise's iconic characters, Cyrax and Sektor, comes to light.

The final episode of the Mortal Kombat Legacy will can be seen below.

Pretty awesome. Though some of them are cheezy, this episode was one of the best imo.

Wow that was awesome. Truth be told I thought the trailer episode was weak and didn't like the real life approach at the MK lore. After watching this episode though, I will go back and watch them all now. I stand corrected. 2 thumbs up.

I hope they make a second season. I really enjoyed this series from start to finish. There's a ton of characters they haven't shown yet so there can be more episodes that can be produced:)

I hope this illustrates how good this storyline is and how much there is to be fully realized. However I do not want it to be just a movie. A movie only can be 2 hours long and there are so much stories behind each character. It would be near to impossible to cram all of that into a 2 hour episode and be good. Tancharoen, Warner, and company needs to seriously consider to have a multibillion dollar tv budget series. Each web episode clearly indicates this. The other option would be to just concentrate on one episode and flesh it out as much as possible and do not go on too many tangents (i.e. other character storylines or introduce too many characters). Such as the bitter rivalry between Scorpion and Subzero or Cyrax and Sektor.

I like the series up until the Raiden episode. A god cant get out of a mental hospital? This is Raiden where talking about. I did like the Scorpion vs. Sub Zero episodes though. My only question is, when they say close, do they mean forever or just an end of a season?

Overall the series was good, but the format of it was rather disappointing. I found it annoying how a 3rd of the total runtime was often recaps and credits. I would have much preferred 20 minute long episodes. Only other complaint was the overall appearance. It seemed alot less grittier than the original "test" trailer. Still, the Scorpion/Sub Zero and Sektor/Cyrax episodes were by far the best and I would love to see this taken up as a full TV series. However i'd love to see it redone with a much darker tone.

Considering its success they they HAVE to do a follow up, it would be mad not to. If they did I'd love to see more "key" Mortal Kombat characters like Shang Tsung, Kung Lao & Liu Kang bought in.

No offense, but does gamespot has something wrong with Machinima?

They should continue with a full length series, that would be just epic. I know it costs but it's a good add for the game and awesome fan service. I hope there will be a second season and that it will be all about the tournament as it was first depicted by the first teaser. I'm on the edge of my seat waiting to see how Tancharoen envisions the whole tournament. Warner Bros are smart enough to realize that this series is worth continuing because the fun is only starting in the second season for real.

No! Warner take note, most of us loved this series and Kevin Tancharoen vision of MK is by far the best by somewhere between realistic and fictional. Please back him all the way to create a full MK movie!

@damion_silverbr My guess is that those special effects took quite a bit of time- this one also has arguably the best action scenes of the series, I think it went out with a bang, though the Raiden episode is still my favourite.

In fact now that I think about it they were saying something about the first season being all the beginning stories of the main characters and the second season would follow a more plot driven approach.

I am pretty sure it was said by the producers that they are working on a second season, just need to know if it will be picked up though.

That's a shame, I thought this show had a lot of potential to be great.

@damion_silverbr I think they showed this one last because they A) wanted to give you the connection to the first couple of episodes, and B) thought it was a better episode. For whatever reason, it was interesting to know where the cyborg parts were going.

I only have 1 issue with this. This obviously takes place before episode 1 in the time line, so why wasn't it shown first? If its after episode 1, wheres Kano's new eye?
