A new 3DS system update will allow users to combine Wii U and 3DS eShop balances, Nintendo announced today. Players will be able to share funds between the platforms to purchase content on either device. It is not clear when the update will be released.

This new functionality will require a Nintendo Network ID, which is not currently mandated for 3DS purchases made through the eShop.

Nintendo announced the news during a Nintendo Direct briefing today. The company made clear that players should be sure to use the same Nintendo Network ID on Wii U and 3DS. Players will not be able to combine accounts if they don't.

Looking ahead, Nintendo said the company plans to"continue to improve our offerings" as it relates to the Nintendo Network for 3DS and Wii U.

The new 3DS system update will also introduce a new YouTube app, Nintendo announced today. Users can search for content on the bottom screen and watch videos on the top screen. An updated Wii U YouTube app is also now available, Nintendo said.

What's more, the 3DS update will add Miiverse support, Nintendo said. Check back later for more from today's Nintendo Direct.
