Colony Studios lifts off with sci-fi MMOG

Industry veterans form Nevada-based developer announce first project.

Ten industry old-timers have clubbed together to create a new massively multiplayer online game development company--named Colony Studios--based in Reno, Nevada.

Between them, the staff working for Colony Studios has contributed to a range of popular MMOGs, including World of Warcraft, City of Heroes, Dark Age of Camelot, Lord of the Rings Online, and Ultima Online. Michael Wallis, a game industry veteran of 17 years who worked on games including EVE Online and The Fallen, will be heading up the team as CEO and cofounder.

The company describes its first project as, "A unique, space-based sci-fi MMOG that will contain immersive gameplay mechanics, innovative design, and truly unique content. It will captivate players, create social ties, and push the genre itself."

Wallis comments, "The bottom line is we've launched MMOGs before, and our experience lets us anticipate bumps in the road and steer clear of them. The fact that we've been through it before means things are much less likely to fall through the cracks."

The as-yet-unnamed MMOG is scheduled for a 2009 release.

Lamest argument ever? This coming from a guy who uses a He-Man character as an icon? He-Man is LAME... :D

mugimugi is right. "MMORPG = MASSIVE MULTIPLAYER ONLINE RPG, MMOG = MASSIVE MULTIPLAYER ONLINE GAME. So they are sure correct." You're wrong, Swampthing.

What, no Swampthing, your wrong. With games like Huxley coming out there are going to be MMOFPSs and I'm pretty sure there are a few MMORTSs out there on the internet, I think I remember hearing about a WWII one. So if the company doesn't know what it's going to do then the only logical term would be MMOG, because it might not be a roleplaying game. Besides, it's a acronym people invent new acronyms to make stuff simpler to say all the time.

Sorry, but unless you can provide sourcing for your argument, I stand correct. Show me somewhere else where Blizzard or Turbine have referred to their games as MMOGs instead of MMORPGs. If you can't, then you're just making it up as you go along too.

What the heck is a MMOG??? The CORRECT term is MMORPG guys, come on.... Where did you get this abberation? WoW is an Massively Multiplayer ROLE PLAYING Game, same with CoH, Lord of the Rings Online, etc, etc. Sometimes shortened as MMO, but NEVER MMOG...

Well since they have so much experience with them they should be able to pull off a decent game.

We'll see what the game ends up being like. I was born in Reno though, cool to hear they have a game development studio there now. :D

Finally we might get a decent sci-fi mmo. I'm so sick of all these MMO's coming with the exact same setting. Eve online was too slow and got boring, I loved Earth & Beyond so I hope it's more like that.

Riverwolf007: 2009? Ok, so after it gets pushed back a few times that means what? 2010? 11? lol Knowing most MMO's development schedule, it will be out in 2015.

That's neat I guess, but as far as sci-fi MMO's go, my attention is turned completely to the upcoming WH40k game.

Very excited, hopefully it will be good. Hoping for a super deep, enormously technical space sci-fi FPS on ground, space sim in space type deal. If it's like that, you've got my 15 a month.

A good sci-fi MMO would be awesome. Many have tried, and many have completely failed (Star Wars: Galaxies?). Maybe these guys can pull it off. Maybe someone else will. Doesn't really matter as long as someone gets it done.

Meh. New MMOs always promise great things and rarely deliver. We'll see as the release date approaches.
