Cliff Bleszinski has a pitch for a new first-person shooter and it doesn't sound like Gears of War

"A lot of these kids playing Call of Duty, I don't think they know what a proper arena shooter is," says Bleszinski.

If you don't recognise this Unreal Tournament map, you're missing out.

Games development legend (and Unreal Tournament designer) Cliff Bleszinski has dropped a few hints that he might be looking to start development on a new fast-paced arena first-person shooter.

The fascinating interview, which is well worth a listen, can be listened to on the Pointless podcast. After taking a break from the industry for the past year, Bleszinski confirmed that he has "a slide deck" for a new project. "I have a pitch. I have concept art. I know pretty much what I want to do," he said.

"It will be a PC experience that will hearken back to a certain type of game that we cut our teeth on."

The project in Bleszinski's head is also a first-person shooter. "It's in my DNA," he said.

"A lot of these kids playing Call of Duty, I don't think they know what a proper arena shooter is," he added. Elsewhere in the interview, Bleszinski also said he never wants to make a game again that features cutscenes or scripted sequences, and that he doesn't think he'll ever go back to Epic.

Bleszinski also reflected on how developers can get jaded in the industry, and said how old ideas can be successfully reintroduced into popular culture.

"The thing that a lot of developers don't realise is every 10 years you can take a game mechanic or an IP and and reintroduce it to an audience. Look at I, Frankenstein coming out as a movie. [Kids] don't remember the Robert de Niro/Kenneth Branagh one that came out in the 90s because they were 6. So it's brand new. All these kids who love Sookie Stackhouse, they never watched Buffy. These kids who like The Walking Dead, they don't know Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead. So it's the same thing. Every 10 years. It's cyclical. But the problem is you get developers who are in their 30s on up, and you get jaded developer syndrome."

For the record, it's been six years since an Unreal Tournament game was released.

There hasn't been an Unreal Tournament in six years and no one cares. Ya know what though; go ahead and make another one. Who didn't see this coming?

I like how he tries to make it sound like something new, when all hes really doing is diggin' up the past.

I fucking Hate Cliffy B. He's that douchebag that acts like a 13 year old in a grown mans body because he thinks its cool, when its really annoying and pathetic.

He's right about the cyclic thing.  Just look at Star Citizen.  Space sims, a genre that has a historical track record of success, has been dormant for a long time.  Now, it's the new hotness.

I just want to think again. I don't want to point a gun and instantly have an enemy die. I want each kill to take effort and make an impact on the match.

Nothing better than playing Facing Worlds on Unreal Tournament while listening to Foregone Destruction!

"Proper arena shooter"

You mean bringing back ancient, clunky mechanics for health management, movement, cover placement and the hassle that it was the simple act of throwing a grenade in the old days? Yeah, because that worked out so well lately, i.e. Duke Nukem Forever.

Brilliant.

I don't mind "cutscenes and scripted sequences", personally.

Plus, I couldn't identify that map.  Never played multiplayer games back in the day.

"I'm Doing Something!  PAY ATTENTION TO ME!"

That's Nice, Cliff.

Although I think this retro idea is neat, and badly needed (Tribes was one of the best things ever), I have a feeling it will succeed in spite of you, not because of you.

Play DM on Morpheus, get the rocket launcher and Shield Belt, go to the highest possible point in the map, I am Godlike.

I LOVE this map... Unreal Tournament 2004

CTF Facing Worlds i think is the name of that map. UT one is still the best in the series and it sucks that GT Interactive is no more and Epic hasn't been interested in or able to recreate the feel of the original.

Why not?  Titanfall is the most anticipated next gen game around, and it's borrowing the old Tribes formula.

So you just making repeats?  Just because others in your examples copy people from 10 years ago doesnt mean you need to.

Way to have NO innovation or imagination.

Awesome! I remember the days with my Voodoo 4500 and Quake 2. Those where the days, CTF, JailBreak Mod and DM. It was a badass game, used to pop in Korn and play to that shit all night long! Then I started building maps, think I still have the compiler software lol.

Quake 3 and Unreal Tourney were awesome also, the shooters today cant hold a candle to them, too focused on "realism". Think you can just sit in a corner, COD style and be good? Think again. You stop,  you die, that simple.

Wow! Now this Gamespot is some real news. Finally some official talk about the next Quake3/Unreal Tourament style fastpaced old school arena shooter. It is very badly needed since Quake Live isn't getting new players because of the dated graphics foreaxmple.

Now Reborn has gotten it's self some competition.

@frylock1987 F that.  I support him in making a similar game to Unreal Tournament 2004.  Best FPS ever IMO.  Won game of year too.

@J_Dangerously Space sims have always been fun.  I never stopped liking the genre, its just that companies got onto the first person shooter train after call of duty's success and stopped making other things.

@vader501st

God damn toddler. Duke Nukem Forever is not old school FPS. It's exactly the kinda lame modern Duty of Battlefield. Duke 3D is old school FPS. I see if you hate healthpacks. It's only because you sucked horribly due to not wanting actually to get in the game and learn the gameplay.

ThePowerOfHAT

@blackace Tribes Ascend really nailed everything I loved about that series.  It's the best free-to-play game I've ever played.  (Team Fortress 2 went that route well after I'd already bought it.)

I admire Cliff's interest in bringing back the sort of twitch shooter gameplay that the Unreal series expanded so greatly on over the years, but at the same time, I also feel like you still have to move things forward.  Tribes Ascend did a fantastic job of bringing back the series' core gameplay while also adding in its own wrinkles.  Hopefully Cliff's new concept does something similar with the classic arena shooter.

No F the consoles.  The PC port of UT3 is what ruined that franchise.  Last great UT was UT2K4

@quakke

Couldn't agree more. I mean, I'm on steam looking for a FPS with classic TF deathmatch, and there really isn't much...

@cirugo Like he said, there's nothing wrong with an old idea (or even an old genre), it's what you make of it that matters. It's harder to make something fresh and worth playing out of an old and ingrained genre, but that doesn't mean it's impossible.

@quakke@vader501st

I beg to differ....DNF was nothing like Call of Duty or Battlefield. The enemies were hard when you played it on hard, your health did no rgenerate and they didn't hold your fucking hand all the way until the credits with their bullshit tips on what to do.

quakke

@Hurvl@cirugo

I rather UT/Q3 style fastpaced test of skill arena shooter anyday, over random generic CoD clone number 294.

@frylock1987@quakke@vader501st

"your health did no rgenerate and they didn't hold your fucking hand"

Holy mother of god! Are you sincerly saying this? I especially hated the fact that Duke was made into lameass modern magical CoD soldier that just regenerates by sucking thumb behind a cover like a true chicken. How many medpacks did you see in Duke Forever, huh? One, two, three? NO! Howabout zero. Duke Forever was Call of Duty because you regenerated, had weaponlimit, had sprintburst disabling running and gunning, had pipelike leveldesign which didn't allow you to explore even one bit, had enemies that all felt the same, had weapons that all felt the same, dumb cutscenes or stuff happening while you couldn't do anything (it's supposed to be videogame not freaking video to watch), all the enviroment was Call of Duty style brown-grey colored, the game didn't allow you to pickup Jetpack in every level because it wouldn't work in a Call of Duty pipegame..

And just for your information. All of these things that you couldn't do in Duke Forever, you could do em' in a game that was released in 1996 for christ sakes. Duke Nukem: 3D and every other old school FPS. Duke Nukem Forever (2011) is just modern bullshit product made for dumb casual gamers like yourself.
