These are the original games, recreated as true to the originals as possible, Nintendo said, though it's unclear if glitches or other oddities with the originals have been addressed.

Players can trade and battle their Pokemon wirelessly; this was not possible for the original games, which required a cable for multiplayer functionality. The new versions will launch on the eShop on February 27, which is the same day that Pokemon Red launched for GameBoy back in 1996 in Japan.

In other Pokemon news, Nintendo also today announced a new "free-to-start" Pokemon Picross game. It is set to launch in early December.
